Keppel FELS Implements Modern Welding Upgrade

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

February 4, 2013

Keppel FELS’ existing panel line shop is upgraded with PEMA Welding Automation.

PEMA Welding Automation has been appointed by rig builder Keppel FELS to implement the latest in modern welding automation system for their production facilities. The solution is first-of-its-kind enabling Keppel FELS to have the world’s most technologically advanced panel line and supportive micro panel line for manufacturing the oil rigs.

Having successfully delivered almost half of the world’s new-build jack-up rigs and a third of the semisubmersibles in the past decade, Keppel  FELS productivity and capabilities will be significantly increased with the new panel line.
These solutions are unique especially for rig building. Delivery will consist of an extensive flat panel line with several highly advanced systems and a supporting micro panel line. They can be further upgraded with robotic solutions to improve the productivity of the yard. A feat of the installation is that it will be performed while production continues on the side. PEMA welding stations and portals will use the latest welding technology from Lincoln Electric for superior welding quality and reliability.

Pemamek will also provide Keppel with a local service support to ensure smooth production and minimizing the downtime. Annual service and maintenance contract will be also applied for this project.

High Efficiency Requirements
High efficiency and productivity are hallmarks of the Keppel brand. Keppel yards have established a reputation for delivering complex projects on time, within budget and in a safe manner. To support the high requirements for the production and even raise the standards, Finnish Pemamek Oy Ltd has been contracted by Keppel FELS to implement the flexible PEMA technology in the yard’s rig production which ensures high productivity and quality.

Target in reducing production costs
In addition, the advanced technology of the PEMA welding and cutting automation will reduce production costs and also increase the speed of the panel line process.

Commitment to customer needs
”We chose Pema as our partner for their proven technology and ability to deliver the right solutions to meet our needs. Through close collaboration, we have identified ways to significantly increase our productivity, reduce costs in the long run and upgrade our facilities. PEMA are the thought leaders in what they do and we are pleased that they have presented creative new solutions to enhance our operations,” says Mr. NG, Seng Chong, Assistant Shipyard Manager.

This contract is already a second between Keppel and Pemamek in a year: Keppel Offshore & Marine’s new yard in Baku, Azerbaijan also acquired a panel line system in early 2012. Keppel’s Baku Shipyards focus on building tankers, OSV’s and ship repair.
