Kongsberg Offers Remote Vessel Access with Netop
Kongsberg Maritime in Norway, who supplies navigation, automation, training and safety systems for maritime transport and offshore vessels, is now implementing Netop remote control software to establish secure remote access to all vessels with Kongsberg Maritime installations.
Using existing satellite connections, Netop’s new technology, SecureM2M, creates a secure tunnel into Kongsberg Maritime networked devices, easily enabling remote support, troubleshooting, provisioning and asset monitoring without exposing their systems to the public Internet. A fundamental vulnerability to hacker attacks is removed by eliminating the need for open ports and public IP addresses. The need to configure and maintain VPNs to access devices or to provide external access is also eliminated with this new solution.
“Security is, of course, important to us. With this new and ground-breaking secure remote access software from Netop, we decrease vulnerability to cyber-attacks on vessels with Kongsberg Maritime installations,” said Erik Ellingsen, Product Manager, Fleet Management, from Kongsberg Maritime. “With few crew members with IT skills on board most vessels, this software will also increase efficiency and productivity – improving customer satisfaction. Today, we have to handle issues over the phone or send out an engineer on site. Going forward, problem solving on vessels can be handled immediately from shore with no geographic restrictions for our customer support engineers”.
“With an increasing number of cyber-attacks facing any device connected to the Internet, we are very happy to provide Kongsberg Maritime with our new SecureM2M solution,” said Kurt Bager, CEO, Netop. “High security, easily enabling remote services to unattended devices, combined with reduced costs and the possibility of providing excellent support to customers is a very exciting combination for many of our customers”.
