As we greet 2021, it seems fitting to address a “big” topic - a topic that is ultimately going to change everything, including (and perhaps especially) training. The topic is “big data”. The goal  of today’s Training Tip for Ships is to get us thinking about big data in training. If we understand it, we can lay the groundwork to take advantage of it.We are in the data age – and this is especially important for training. Everything we do can be done more efficiently and more effectively by understanding it more deeply.

Raytheon Anschütz Enhance Bridge INS

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz says it has launched a new Synapsis software release and hardware infrastructure, which will further enhance the bridge alarm management and add new features and capabilities to the Integrated Navigation System (INS). Synapsis Intelligent Bridge Control is the world’s first Integrated Navigation System (INS) which complies with the IMO Performance Standards MSC.252(83) and IEC 61924-2. About two years after product launch, over 100 Synapsis systems have been contracted and more than half of them are already in operation. “The new Synapsis includes main functional enhancements which affect bridge alarm management (BAM) and target management.

Raytheon Anschütz Innovations to Debut at SMM

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz announced the launch of navigation system innovations as well as improvements to existing technologies for this year’s SMM. The world’s first IMO-certified Integrated Navigation System (INS), Synapsis Intelligent Bridge Control, will take the center stage at the Raytheon Anschütz booth. About two years after product launch, more than 100 Synapsis systems have been contracted and more than half of them are already in operation.

Raytheon IBNS for New Italian Coast Guard Ships

Germany-based Raytheon Anschuetz with Italian provider Seastema, to deliver Integrated Bridge & Navigation Systems (IBNS) for two Italian Coast Guard military patrol vessels. The vessels are currently being built at Fincantieri's Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) shipyard. Delivery of the IBNS will be the first military application under a teaming agreement between Raytheon Anschuetz and Seastema. Together, the companies will provide Italy's Coast Guard patrol vessels with the latest generation IBNS, fully integrated with Seastema's SEAS-Navy ship automation system.

Raytheon Anschütz Systems for New Oman OPV's

Raytheon Anschütz to supply Integrated Bridge & Navigation Systems to four Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) for the Royal Navy of Oman. Under the contract, Raytheon Anschütz will equip Oman’s new Al-Ofouq-class OPVs with a complete, new-generation Integrated Bridge and Navigation Systems. Included in the scope of the program is comprehensive documentation and training for instructors, operators and maintenance support personnel. The standardized human machine interface and increased functionality of the multifunctional workstations empower crew to operate from any workplace on the bridge. A consistent system design and the use of standard hardware provide a high level of flexibility to adapt the bridge system to various mission and naval requirements.

Bridge Navigation Systems Contract for Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman contracted by Chengxi Shipyard to supply navigation bridge equipment for a series of new 39,500-dwt dry bulk cargo ships. The contract is for the supply of navigation bridge equipment for a series of 39,500-dwt dry bulk cargo ships being built in China for the China Navigation Company Pte. Ltd., Singapore, the deep-sea shipping company of the Swire Group. Under the contract with Chengxi Shipyard Co., Ltd., Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine business unit will deliver four shipsets to the company's shipyard in Jiangyin, China, for installation. Each shipset will include a complete integrated bridge system (IBS) with navigation sensors, a VisionMaster™ Total Watch™ radar and electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS).

Sperry Marine Nav Systems for Italian Superyachts

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected to supply the bridge navigation systems for two new superyachts under construction by Italian yachtbuilder Perini Navi at its shipyards in Viareggio and La Spezia. The orders for the integrated bridge systems were awarded to Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit through Telemar Yachting, Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine’s authorized sales and service representative for the yacht market in Italy. NOC Supplies Italian Bulk Carriers

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected to supply the bridge navigation systems for three new bulk carriers being built in China for Italian shipowner Deiulemar Shipping. Each of the ships is to be fitted with the company’s Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT S- and X-band radars, gyrocompass, autopilot, steering control, speed log, echosounder, voyage data recorder and other navigation systems. The equipment is being supplied through Telemar, the sales and service representative for Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine products and systems in Italy. Telemar will oversee the installations and provide technical support and service for the shipboard navigation systems.

Cathelco Protects Floating Nuclear Power Plant

A prototype for a series of Russian floating nuclear power stations will be protected against hull corrosion with a Cathelco impressed current cathodic protection system (ICCP). Designed to provide nuclear power in remote regions of the Arctic, the hull of the floating power plant is being constructed at the Baltiysky Zavod yard in St Petersburg. It will then be installed with two nuclear reactors providing up to 70 megawatts of electricity – enough to serve a city with a population of 200,000.

NG Supplies Nav Systems for Brazil OSVs

Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Sperry Marine business unit has been awarded contracts to supply bridge navigation systems for four new offshore supply vessels to be built in Brazil. The four multipurpose platform supply vessels, designed by Rolls-Royce, will be built at the Estaleiro Alianca shipyard near Rio de Janeiro for Companhia Brasileira de Offshore (CBO). They will be placed on long-term charter with Petrobras, the Brazilian state oil company, to provide support services for offshore oil platforms. Samskip Heads up New EU-Funded Project

CREATE3S is a new research project funded by the European Commission. Bringing together some of the leading companies in short sea shipping and ship design, CREATE3S aims to develop a new generation of short sea vessels utilizing advanced design and manufacturing techniques, enabling Europe to strengthen its shipping and shipbuilding competitiveness. The project is being coordinated by Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics BV in Rotterdam and the company says it intends to be a prominent user of the concept. The CREATE3S concept visualizes a vessel consisting of two principal modules: a ship hull module and one or more large cargo modules. The CREATE3S concept is intended to be equally applicable to container, dry bulk and liquid cargoes.
