29,476 Vessels Arrive at Rotterdam Port
2019 was a relatively safe year for shipping in the port of Rotterdam. Over the past year, the number of sea-going vessels arriving was about the same as in 2018: 29,491 compared to 29,476 last year.According to the port authority, the number of accidents also remained virtually the same: 113 compared to 112, which involved mainly ‘parking damage’. As there was one very serious accident, the NSI (Nautical Safety Index) – a reflection of nautical safety – was slightly below the norm (6.56 instead of 7).

AB Klaipedos nafta (KN), the operator of oil products and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, and the German company Nauticor GmbH & Co. have agreed on the sale of KN’s 10% stake in the charter contract of Kairos, the world’s largest LNG bunker supply vessel to Nauticor.This leaves the world's biggest LNG bunkering vessel at Nauticor's disposal. Nor Lines Cargo Vessels to Bunker with Titan LNG
Shipping company Nor Lines has allocated its two LNG-powered multipurpose vessels to a biweekly liner service from the SCA terminal in Rotterdam to the Norwegian coast. Titan LNG, the service supplier of liquefied natural gas, will be supplying the chilled fuel to two Nor Lines' vessels - The MV Kvitnos and the MV Kvitbjørn. The ships are bunkering, like the Wes Amelie, with Titan LNG at the City Terminal in the Prins Willem Alexander harbour (port number 2790). The LNG is delivered to the vessels by trucks.
Copenhagen Malmo Port Begins LNG Bunkering
Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) now offers bunkering of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). First off was the vessel Ireland, which unloaded cement in Malmö. In connection with this she was provided with LNG via tanker lorries. It's about bunkering where safety requirements are extra tough. The bunkering at the end of May was made possible through close cooperation between the LNG supplier SkanGas, the client company Cementa, and CMP. Fluxys to Add a Permanent LNG Bunkering Facility in Antwerp
Fluxys has taken over the concession in the port of Antwerp at quay 526-528 to make liquefied natural gas (LNG) available as an alternative fuel for ships and barges, in one of the Port Authority's key initiatives to make the port's activities more sustainable. Fluxys will add a permanent LNG bunkering facility by the end of next year to complement the existing mobile (truck-to-ship) bunkering service. For ships and heavy duty trucks LNG is the ideal alternative in the transition to lower greenhouse gas emissions and better air quality.
Polaris Commences Icebreaking in Bothnian Bay
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered icebreaker Polaris has left its home base in Helsinki on Tuesday to become the third Finnish icebreaker active in this year’s icebreaking season. The nearly 110-meter-long Polaris is the world’s first LNG powered icebreaker, running on both LNG and marine diesel. The vessel will head to Tahkoluoto, Pori, to bunker LNG before joining fellow icebreakers Kontio and Otso which departed on December 18, 2017 and January 9 respectively. “The crew is very excited to begin icebreaking duty after a long summer and autumn,” said Pasi Järvelin, master of IB Polaris.
Skangas to Source LNG at Import Terminal on Isle of Grain
Skangas has announced that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with National Grid Grain LNG. Under the terms of the LoI, Skangas is to source LNG at the Grain LNG import terminal on the Isle of Grain in the UK. Skangas, which produces LNG, struck the deal with Grain LNG to ensure a reliable supply of LNG is available, which is critical to the fast-growing small-scale LNG market. As a result of this recent development, Skangas becomes the first small-scale LNG supplier to enter into such an agreement with a UK-based import terminal.

Wärtsilä said it booked an order in June to supply the cargo handling system and cargo tanks for a new 3,000 cubic meter capacity liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge currently under construction. MAN Cryo to Supply LNG Bunkering for Swedegas
MAN Cryo, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s marine-LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer, has signed a contract with Swedish infrastructure company, Swedegas, to deliver an LNG bunkering facility within the Port of Gothenburg. The new facility will enable vessels to bunker LNG from trucks or containers while simultaneously loading/unloading cargo at two jetties at the port’s Energy Port, dispensing with the need to make a separate refuelling stop. The solution offers increased flexibility for customers and LNG suppliers, and will be open for multiple suppliers.

Fewer Bunkers in Rotterdam in 2016
In 2016 the sale of bunker oil - fuel for shipping - in the Rotterdam bunker port diminished from 10.6 million m3 to 10.1 million m3. There is no reason known for this decline. For the first time, ships bunkered a sea-going vessel with LNG, liquefied natural gas, in Rotterdam. Every year, some 11 million m3 of bunker fuel is supplied to vessels in Rotterdam. In Rotterdam, every imaginable fuel can be obtained in huge quantities. The port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest bunkering port, as well as one of the top three bunkering ports worldwide.

Excelerate Energy said t its newly upgraded floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Explorer recently completed its sendout performance tests and reached a sendout capacity of 1.0 Bcf/d – an unprecedented milestone for an FSRU. New Incentive for Ships that Bunker LNG in Rotterdam
Rotterdam is introducing an additional incentive to bunker LNG, liquefied natural gas. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has reserved a total of EUR 1.5 million for this incentive. The scheme will apply until 2020. Up until this time, seagoing vessels that bunker LNG in Rotterdam can benefit from a 10% discount on gross seaport dues thanks to the new scheme. Allard Castelein – CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority – announced this on 15 December 2015 during the second day of the ‘LNG Masterplan final event’. LNG is the cleanest fossil fuel.
Port Gothenburg Offering LNG
Ships running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) are going to be able to bunker at the Port of Gothenburg, as new regulations for LNG bunkering have been introduced by the Gothenburg Port Authority in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam and the Swedish Transport Agency. The regulations will allow cargo ships to bunker LNG at a cargo terminal and are the first general regulations to be introduced in Sweden. Brookings Institution Hosting Panels on LNG Marine Fuel
The Brookings Institution, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, will host a two-panel discussion on the use of LNG as a marine fuel on Tuesday, March 3, the organization announced today. The panels are part of the Institution's Energy Security and Climate Initiative (ESCI). The first panel will examine evolving policy, regulatory, and environmental factors associated with using LNG as a marine fuel. The second panel will address emerging opportunities and barriers to adoption. ESCI Senior Fellow Charles Ebinger will provide introductory remarks and then moderate the discussion.
