Dubai-based port operator DP World announced it has completed the acquisition of Fraser Surrey Docks in Canada from Macquarie Infrastructure Partners (MIP) alongside its partner Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ).The enabler of global trade said in a press release that said the acquisition complements its footprint in Canada, which also includes terminal operations in Vancouver, Nanaimo, Prince Rupert and St John’s, without disclosing the value of the purchase.The integrated coast-to-coast platform provides customers with bulk, breakbulk and general cargo services.DP World's global strategy is to become a trade enabler and solutions provider as the company looks to participate across a wider part of the supply chain.

Havila Kystruten and Kongsberg have signed a 10-year  “Power-by-the-Hour” service agreement for four new coastal cruise vessels that are currently under construction. The contract value is 150 million kroner ($17.5 million).Power-by-the-Hour was launched in 2017, and was first sold to the cargo operator NorLines the same year. The agreement means that the vessel owner is handing the responsibility for service planning and performance back to the equipment’s supplier, Kongsberg Maritime. The customer pays a fixed charge per hour of operation, per ship.

The world's No. 2 container shipping line MSC said on Wednesday it would stop taking new bookings for Iran due to the decision by the United States to re-impose sanctions on Tehran after withdrawing from the international nuclear deal. In a note to clients, privately held MSC said it was "ceasing to provide access to services to and from Iran", adding that they would "conclude this period with the minimum disruption" to their customers' business. "While MSC is not accepting bookings for shipments originating from Iran, or destined to Iran, we will continue to carry certain legally acceptable cargoes during the wind-down period, notably for importation of foodstuffs," Switzerland-based MSC said in its note.

A group of investors has pumped nearly $40 million into Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven. Norwegian cruise, ferry and cargo operator Hurtigruten and its owners, Petter A. He is shipping educated at Maersk, where he, prior to his employment at Western Bulk, for 10 years held a number of positions in the group including management positions in Maersk Broker.

The global breakbulk and heavy-lift markets have had to navigate choppy waters in recent years. Not necessarily due to a shortage of freight, but as a consequence of unsustainably low freight rates. The global economic recovery since 2009 has been slow, and competition for the multipurpose sector has intensified due to bulkers, container lines and RoRo’s making forays into the breakbulk and heavylift market, as they look to diversify their business and make up for the lack of demand in their respective core markets.

Abu Dhabi Ports is implementing a brand new terminal operating system (TOS) which will enhance the general cargo operations at the emirate’s ports, significantly improving processing times and the full range of customer service offerings. The state-of-the-art port management software called “Master Terminal” will replace Abu Dhabi Ports’ existing systems and support the management of all aspects of the general cargo operations, including bulk, break bulk, project and Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) cargo. It will provide real-time information about cargo flows at any time of the day and improve the utilisation of Port facilities, while increasing the visibility and productivity with regards to operations, planning and reporting procedures.

Moody’s Investors Service has upgraded Canaveral Port Authority’s $30.2 million in outstanding revenue bonds to A2 from A3 and rated its financial outlook stable. The upgrade was attributed to low leverage, cruise growth, stable finances and proactive capital plan management. Port Canaveral’s five-year capital plan totals nearly $600 million, which will be financed with a combination of grants, matching funds, cash flow and unrestricted cash balances. The major current project is a new cruise terminal for Royal Caribbean, which is paying half of the $105 million total cost.

Finnish end-to-end cargo operator, Containerships, has ordered two additional new, state-of-the-art, dual-fuel engine-technology containerships. This follows an order announced earlier this year for two similar vessels. With the announcement, Containerships informed it will be the first shortsea container operator in Europe to run ships on LNG. “Our new ships will not just meet, but exceed all environmental standards in the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) where we operate,” noted the CEO of Containerships, Kari-Pekka Laaksonen.

McTays, the shipbuilding subsidiary of HS Ocean Group (HSOG), was awarded a contract to design and build four barges by waste management company Cory Environmental. The barges designed by McTays will be lighter and offer greater flexibility in order to meet Cory’s requirements. The 12 month contract will underpin 60 jobs within the company’s shipyard for 12 months and will benefit the local supply chain. Wärtsilä Hamworthy,  announce an agreement with Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA, the global rolling cargo operator, to retrofit their vessel MV Tamesis with a Krystallon Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS). The systems will remove sulphur and particulates from the exhaust gasses of the vessel's main and auxiliary engines. The multi-stream scrubber system will be the world's largest in order to manage the exhaust gasses produced by the 38,486dwt Mark IV RoRo vessel's combined engine power of 28,000kW.

Crowley Liner Services is expanding at Port Everglades with a new 10-year terminal lease that calls for additional acreage and increased container guarantees. "Crowley Liner Services is a success story for the Southport area, which was expanded in 1997 when Broward County purchased additional acreage for container handling," said Port Everglades Director Phil Allen. The Port of New Orleans, which sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Katrina, had regained nearly 94 percent of its pre-storm cargo by the end of May, according to figures released by the port Friday. The port went through a dismal four-month stretch following Katrina's strike on Aug. 29 that included a 12-day shutdown, the loss of about one-third of its operating capacity and the rerouting of cargo to other ports by several shipping lines. But figures compiled for the first four months of 2006, the latest available, showed that the tonnage of general cargo handled at the port was only 3.8 percent lower than the first four months of 2005. General cargo includes goods shipped in containers and breakbulk cargo, such as steel and rubber, that is transported on pallets.
