WinGD to Deliver Methanol Engines for COSCO Containerships

WinGD will supply 10X92DF-M methanol-fuelled engines to four 16,000 TEU container vessels to be built for COSCO SHIPPING Lines at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co. Ltd. These vessels will be delivered from 2025 and will feature WinGD’s first X92DF-M engines in China. The methanol engines will be delivered from engine builder CSSC CMD in Shanghai, which is jointly developing the engines with WinGD. The fourth vessel in the series will be the first to have methanol engines installed from the beginning.

Caterpillar Marine Launches Gen II Displays

Caterpillar Marine has unveiled its second-generation Cat Marine Displays (CMD) used for monitoring all engine platforms, supporting different vessel applications for professional maritime use.The three CMD variants—Cat CMD5 (5” display), CMD8 (8” display), and CMD13 (13.3” display)—designed to provide operators easy access to current operating data and alarms for engines. The new displays are type-approved and environmentally sealed to be waterproof for a wide range of temperature operations.

WinGD X-DF Engine Earns Guinness Power Record

Hartmann Orders ME-LGIP Engines for LPG Tankers

MAN Energy Solutions won a contract to supply individual MAN B&W ME-LGIP (Liquid Gas Injection Propane) dual-fuel engines to three 5,000-cubiic-meter-capacity liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers currently under construction by CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC-SOE) in Shanghai for German shipping company Hartmann Gas Carrier.Each newbuilding will receive a propulsion package featuring one 5S35ME-LGIP engine with an Alpha controllable pitch propeller, power take-off (PTO) and propulsion control system (PCS).

Building the Most Powerful Otto Cycle Engine in the World

WinGD has released a time-lapse video of the build of a 12X92DF engine, built by CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD) in Lingang, Shanghai.This twelve-cylinder version of the 92cm bore X-DF dual fuel engine from WinGD, is set to be the largest and most powerful Otto cycle gas and dual-fuel engine ever built and will bring a new level of environmental sustainability to the containership segment.The engine build has taken approximately 3,125 person days, which totals to 25,000-man hours. The engine weighs over 2,100 tons and has received parts from more than 15 countries.

CEMS Rolls out Hi-tech Labs in Visakhapatnam

India's Centre of Excellence in Maritime & Shipbuilding (CEMS), a well-funded startup in skill development for maritime and shipbuilding sector has announced thatits hi tech labs at Visakhapatnam are ready for starting orientation programmes for trainees. A seminar was held on 13th July 2018 in Vishakhapatnam to inform stakeholders about the facilities in the labs and to begin the process of training. This is shortly after CEMS announced the readiness of its Mumbai labs. CEMS is promoted by Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) in partnership with Siemens and Ministry of Shipping. Its Visakhapatnam campus is located in the Indian Maritime University (IMU) premises.

SCI Led JV Takes Delivery of LNG Carrier “PRACHI"

A Joint Venture comprising The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line), and Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL), have taken delivery of a new build Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier MT “PRACHI” having a capacity of 173,000 m3, from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. South Korea on 30th November, 2016. Simultaneously, the vessel has been delivered to Petronet LNG Ltd, New Delhi India’s first importer of LNG on a 19 year charter. Since 2004, Petronet has imported 5 million tons of LNG a year from Qatar, and an additional 2.5 million tons per year since 2009, using three LNG carriers.

India's GSL Delivers Patrol Vessel to Mauritius

Indo-Mauritian maritime defence Co-operation got another fillip with the delivery of first Fast Patrol Vessel, MCGS VICTORY, designed and built in-house by Goa Shipyard Limited(GSL) for Mauritius Coast Guard, on 26th September 2016 at GSL. The vessel is primarily designed for Coastal Patrolling, Anti-piracy, Anti-smuggling, Anti-drug Surveillance, Anti-poaching Operations, and Search and Rescue Operations. The vessel is 50 meter long, fitted with 30 mm CRN-91 Gun, 12.7 mm HMGs & 7.62 mm MMGs besides state-of-the-art Navigation and Communication equipment and is capable of achieving a high speed of 35 knots. Significantly, trials were undertaken in peak monsoon months and the vessel achieved all design parameters. The ship was ceremonially handed over by RAdm.

Sri Lankan Minister Visits Goa Shipyard

Sri Lanka's Minister of State for Defence Ruwan Wijewardene  visited the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) at the Vasco town, located around 40 kms from Panaji in India and inspected Sri Lankan ships under construction, the Press Trust of India reported. He inspected the progress of the two Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) being built for Sri Lanka Navy at Goa Shipyards. Wijewardene held discussion with GSL Chairman and Managing Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital  along with the shipyard officials on the progress of the ship building process. They also visited an almost completed similar type AOPV being built for the Indian Coast Guard to see the facilities and equipment fitted on board. The first AOPV is scheduled to join the SLN fleet in August 2017 and the second one year after.

There were representatives from Far East, Indian Subcontinent, Persian Gulf, Western Europe, Mediterranean, Black Sea, East and South Africa, Red Sea, Myanmar, USA, etc. The Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Capt. IRClass Rules for ICG Ships

The “Rules and Regulations for Construction and Classification of Indian Coast Guard Ships”, developed by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) were formally released by the Director General Indian Coast Guard, Vice Admiral HCS Bisht AVSM on 28th December 2015 at a ceremony held at the Indian Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi. Additional DG, Rajender Singh PTM TM, all Deputy Director Generals, all Principal Directors and other senior officers of the Coast Guard Headquarters were present at the release. Sinha Takes Over as CMD of SCI

Capt. B.B. Sinha, Director (P&A) of The Shipping Corporation of India limited (SCI) has assumed the additional charge of the post of Chairman & Managing Director, SCI w.e.f. 01.01.2016 as per the Office Order received from the Ministry of Shipping till 31.03.2016 or until, further order whichever earlier. A. K. Gupta who was the Chairman and Managing Director of SCI superannuated on 31st December 2015.

Goa Shipyard Seeks Foreign Tie-up for $5.3 billion Navy Order for MCMVs

India's Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) has decided to tie up with the foreign yards for the technology transfer required to create these high-tech ships, after bagging the deal to build Mines Counter-Measures Vessels (MCMVs) for the Indian Navy. Chairman and managing director (CMD) of GSL Rear Admiral (retired) Shekhar Mital said that the building of 12 MCMVs by the GSL would start after 3 years, following the approval of Defence Acquisition Council and finalisation of the contract. The Union Defence Ministry had recently cleared the Rs 32,000 crore ($5.3 billion) -worth project to manufacture 12 MCMVs, which will be built by the GSL. "We will have to tie up with a foreign shipyard because we don't have the technology to build MCMVs. The contract will be finalized in 8 months.

Buoy Tender Vessel Delivered Ahead of Time under IRClass

IRClass (Indian Register of Shipping) has just completed the new construction survey of a high value, technologically sophisticated Buoy Tender cum multi-purpose vessel built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd (India) under single class.The new vessel MV Indira Point, 72 mts long,1350 tons DWT, fitted with Hele-deck and a 35 tons capacity crane for handling buoys in deep seaswas handed over to the Directorate General of Light Houses and Light Ships(DGLL India) in April after completing ahead of schedule by the yard under close supervision of IRClass. The vessel, built at a cost of approx. USD 25 million, was delivered two months ahead of schedule.

IRClass Raises Focus on Offshore

Classification society and IACS member Indian Register of Shipping has established an ‘India and Offshore Advisory Committee’ with a vision to raise the profile of its services and receive strategic advice for growth in South Asia region. The India Advisory Committee comprises of 14 senior members and representatives of the maritime fraternity of India. Formation of this committee follows the launch of UAE Advisory Committee in March this year. IRClass also plans to set up ‘Singapore Advisory Committee’ very soon, preparations for which are at an advanced stage. Setting up high level Advisory Committees in these three key business and maritime geographical regions is in line with IRClass’ ambitious expansion plans.

IMEI Certification - Unique Achievement

For Institute of Marine Engineers of India having achieved standardisation and maintainenace of quality processes simultaneously not just at their Head Office but also their eight branches and Five Chapters, spread all over the country is unique in India, as it is run by a group of honorary volunteers who have dedicated themselves for the cause of their industry. Being an achievement worth celebrating, members of the Institute gathered on Saturday 22nd August 2015, at IME (I) House, Nerul, for the presentation ceremony of the ISO 9001:2008 Certificate. IRClass Backs India’s Efforts to Cut Emissions

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), a ship classification society, has issued a ringing endorsement of the COP21 agreement at the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris. Arun Sharma, CMD, IRClass represented the voice of the Indian Shipping fraternity at the recently concluded COP21 Climate Summit in Paris. Speaking at the India Pavilion on the topic, ‘GHG Emissions from Indian Shipping – Impact and Mitigating Measures’, he defended shipping as the most energy efficient mode of transport. Noting that despite shipping carrying 90 percent of world trade, shipping contributes only 2.2 percent of total Green House Gas emissions, Sharma endorsed the ongoing efforts by IMO to keep global warming below 2 degrees centigrade.
