Michelin's WISAMO Wing Sail System Gets DNV Approval

DNV has awarded an approval in principle for Michelin's WISAMO wing sail system, which is the first AiP to have been awarded to an inflatable wing sail design. The WISAMO wing sail system is currently being installed for testing on the DNV-classed MN Pelican ro-ro cargo vessel.An Approval in Principle is an independent assessment of a concept within an agreed framework, confirming that the design is feasible, and no significant obstacles exist to prevent the concept from being realized.

Making Shipping Greener: Michelin in Deal to Test Inflatable Sail

French tire maker Michelin and Compagnie Maritime Nantaise said on Thursday they will jointly test Michelin's inflatable wing sail this year on a merchant ship for the first time, in a move that may help the shipping industry cut its emissions.The Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) project is centered on an inflatable, retractable and automated wing that can be fitted on commercial vessels and pleasure boats, the statement said.Using wind propulsion, it could help save up to 20% of the fuel used per ship…

Gibdock Completes Two Gibraltar Repair Projects

Gibdock said its Gibraltar yard has completed two projects recently  that demanded ships re-entry into service without delay. Returning customer Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (CMN) chose Gibdock’s facilities to carry an extensive package of work on its ro-ro container vessel, MN Calao, which spent 18 days in the yard last month, taking in its five-year classification survey. The 12,026 dwt, 160m long vessel, which was originally delivered by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 2013, is a sister to the same owner’s MN Tangara, which was docked at Gibdock in June and July 2017. For MN Calao, Gibdock was tasked with carrying out an extensive and complex paint job, covering the underwater hull and the superstructure, including the funnel and mast areas, to return the vessel to ‘as new’ condition.

Verifavia Earns Dual Accreditation

Verifavia, an emissions verification company for the aviation and shipping transport sectors, has received a second accreditation by France’s national accreditation body Cofrac as a global EU monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) verifier. This makes Verifavia the first globally accredited verifier to receive dual accreditation under ISO 14065 standard and regulation 757/2015. This new accreditation by Cofrac follows Verifavia’s recent announcement that it received full EU MRV accreditation from the U.K. Accreditation Service (UKAS), enabling the company to assess or verify any ship anywhere in the world, regardless of country of ownership, flag state or class.

RoCon Design from Knud E. Hansen A/S

French operator Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (CMN) signed a contract with Hyundai MIPO, South Korea for two new RoCon vessels with an option for a third unit. Knud E. Hansen A/S has worked closely with CMN over the past year to develop the design. A number of design options were studied taking into due consideration the operational requirements of CMN and physical constraints in the operating areas including size limitations, limited port facilities, etc. The main deck is loaded via a stern and a quarter ramp.
