ABB Software Aids Supertankers Entering Port of Long Beach
Supertankers entering the Port of Long Beach will use ABB’s marine software to produce real-time data of the keel-to-seabed clearance, improving the safety and efficiency of the operations. Sensors fitted to Tesoro vessels will send information to a Portable Surveyor Box (PSB), carried by the pilot, which will verify their route to the dock. In this specific case, the system is used to continuously validate (and improve) pre-calculated motions from the online decision support system PROTIDE, which is used to calculate safe transit time windows for large oil tankers to enter the port.
Polferries, Sup4Nav Ink Navdec system Deal
The Navdec system designed to improve safety of passengers and freight and aimed to support navigators in collision situations was tested on board the ferry m/f Wawel and m/f Mazovia in 2016. This invention will also be installed now on m/f Baltivia sailing from Świnoujście to Ystad. Polferries decided to equip all ferries with Navdec system to improve safety of passengers and freight. Accordingly, an agreement to this effect was signed between Polferries and Sup4Nav on 8th of December 2016 in Kołobrzeg.
Consortium Targets Better Ship Efficiency and Navigation
A consortium of companies aims to develop an expert decision support system for improved ship efficiency and safer navigation via a two-year R&D project called iSea. Backed by funding from the Eurostars program, the iSea innitiative is led by Danelec Marine, with other participants including Vessel Performance Solutions ApS (Denmark), i-Marine Technologies and Research Inc. (Turkey) and Deniztekno Danismanlik Bilgi Teknolojileri ve Bilgisayar San. Tic. Std. Sti (Turkey). Set to commence the R&D program in January 2017, the iSea team will deliver a set of Expert Decision Support Systems (EDSS) for enhancing the performance and navigability of vessels.
ABB Software to Monitor Cosco Heavy Transport Fleet
ABB, a power and automation technology group, will supply its onboard motion monitoring and forecasting system to the Xiang Rui Kou heavy lift vessel, meaning the entire fleet of Cosco Heavy Transport now benefits from the software. The system that will be installed is a mixed software and motion measurement set-up that on one hand provides clear advice on how to operate the vessel and her cargo through heavy weather, and on the other hand gives clear warnings on the bridge when certain motion thresholds are exceeded.

Cruise Ships Under Special 2013 MoU Scrutiny
The Paris MoU Port State Control Committee's Harmonized Verification Programme (HAVEP) on passenger ship operational safety controls will last throughout 2013. Steamship Mutual advises its members to prepare for Port State Control Inspections, pointing out that passenger ferries and passenger high-speed craft are excluded from the HAVEP. During the HAVEP, Port State Control Officers (PSCOs) will witness an operational control comprising a standard emergency scenario which will include a simulated machinery/other space fire, a passenger evacuation leading to muster drill and an abandon ship drill, which will include lowering of lifeboats to the water and being taken away under power.
MARIS ECDIS Marks 30-unit Deal in Turkey
A run of orders for MARIS has culminated in a 30-system deal covering the delivery of its ECDIS900 system to Turkish customers. The deal highlights the longstanding relationship between MARIS and w marine electronics distribution and service specialist STT International Ltd. It covers existing and future STT requirements to deliver MARIS ECDIS900 to Turkish owners and shipyards. STT reports that the first systems are committed to general cargo vessel newbuildings due delivery to Yildirim Group from the Marmara Shipyard before the end of 2013.

London P&I Club Warns on Need for ECDIS Training
The London P&I Club said the timetable for the mandatory implementation of ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) is advancing and that owners must take account of the potential risks involved in replacing more traditional means of voyage planning and monitoring with advanced technology.
