USCG Arctic Satellites aim to Add Margin of Safety
The U.S. Coast Guard’s mission of keeping the seas safe will soon get an additional boost from space with two polar satellites. The two satellites, called “cube satellites” or “cubesats” for their small size of about 60 square centimeters, or a little under 2 feet, will be part of a payload on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California Nov. 28. The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center (RDC) in New London, Conn. hosted the service’s new Vice Commandant – Admiral Charles Ray on Wednesday. He was onboard the Service’s research center to receive an update on several projects, including CubeSATS, UUV, Small UAS, Sunken Oil, cUAS, Artificial Intelligence, and Blue Force Tracking. Additionally, he will celebrate the growing relationship between the RDC, commissioned in 1972, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.Admiral Ray, a 1981 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, is the Coast Guard’s 31st Vice Commandant.

US Navy Submarines Surface in the Arctic Circle
A pair of U.S. Navy submarines recently surfaced in the Arctic Circle as part of multinational maritime exercise north of Alaska. Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) and Seawolf-class fast attack submarine, USS Connecticut (SSN 22) surfaced in the Arctic Circle March 10 during the multinational maritime Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2018. Both submarines, as well the UK Royal Navy submarine HMS Trenchant (S91), are participating in the biennial exercise in the Arctic to train and validate the warfighting capabilities of submarines in extreme cold-water conditions.
US Navy Kicks Off ICEX 2018
Commander, Submarine Forces (COMSUBFOR) officially kicked-off Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2018 in the Arctic Ocean with the construction of temporary Ice Camp Skate and the arrival of two U.S. Navy fast-attack submarines and one U.K. Royal Navy submarine March 7. ICEX 2018 is a five-week biennial exercise that allows the Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic, increase experience in the region, advance understanding of the Arctic environment and continue to develop relationships with other services, allies and partner organizations.
USCG Sector Long Island Sound Commander Temporarily Reassigned
Capt. Andrew Tucci was temporarily removed from command of Sector Long Island Sound, in New Haven, Connecticut, Monday, by Rear Adm. Steven Poulin, First Coast Guard District commander due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command. Poulin appointed Cmdr. Kevin Reed, deputy commander of Sector Long Island Sound, to assume command of the Sector. Tucci is being reassigned to the Coast Guard's Research and Development Center in New London, Connecticut until further notice. No other details were provided. "The change in leadership will not impact Sector Long Island Sound's operational readiness," said Poulin. "We will remain always ready to perform all Coast Guard missions."
Autonomous Ship Research Center Opened in Finland
Rolls-Royce’s new research facility in Turku, Finland provides a space for the company and its partners to develop technologies that will help shape the future of an increasingly more autonomous global shipping industry. Officially opened on January 25, the new R&D center, which Rolls-Royce calls the Research & Development Center for Autonomous Ships, will focus on projects relating to autonomous navigation, the development of land-based control centers and the use of artificial intelligence in future remote and autonomous shipping operations.

USACE and USCG collaborate to make inland waterways safer. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), supported by Alion Science and Technology (Alion), has put forth considerable effort during the last two years to further extend the capabilities of the existing Automatic Identification System (AIS) network to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation along the inland rivers. The USACE works with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and other agencies and stakeholders to operate and maintain the nation’s Marine Transportation System (MTS).
