U.S.-based ocean carrier Matson announced it has placed a $1 billion order with Philly Shipyard for the construction of three new 3,600 TEU Aloha Class containerships.The first vessel is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2026 with subsequent deliveries in 2027.Matson, which aims to achieve a 40% reduction in Scope 1 fleet emissions by 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 by 2050, said the three newbuilds will be equipped with dual fuel engines that are designed to operate on either conventional marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

For dredging company executives, the recently passed $550 billion federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) sits like the proverbial Horn-o’-Plenty, ready to disgorge billions of federal dollars for maritime, port, harbor, coastal, inland waterways and flood projects, many of which will require dredging. This is a really big deal because this new money will go toward existing projects, work that’s been on the books, so to speak, but, until now, couldn’t be funded.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on Friday awarded a $139 million construction contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC. (GLDD), to complete the third phase of the landmark Port of Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project (CIP). The four-phase infrastructure project will increase the Corpus Christi Ship Channel depth from -47 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) to -54 feet MLLW and widen it to 530 feet, with an additional 400 feet of barge shelves.Phase 3 will extend west of the La Quinta Junction through the Chemical Turning Basin in the Port’s Inner Harbor.

Conrad Shipyard held a steel cutting ceremony for for three new 7,100 cubic yard dump scow barges for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC (GLDD) at its shipyard in Morgan City, La.Dump scows are barges with a hopper type cargo carrying compartment and a split hull design to facilitate bottom dumps to discharge dredged material. Conrad Shipyard said it has been awarded a contract to build four anchor barges, two deck barges and three crane varges for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company LLC (GLDD), headquartered in Oak Brook, Ill. The four anchor barges will be built in Louisiana at Conrad’s Morgan City Shipyard, and the deck and crane barges will be built at its shipyard in Orange, Texas. Conrad Senior Vice President and Director Dan Conrad made the announcement: “We have delivered seven vessels to GLDD since 2003,” he said.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the appointment of 29 new members to the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Committee (MTSNAC). Established in 2010, MTSNAC is comprised of leaders from commercial transportation firms, ship construction, repair and recycling, trade associations, state and local public entities, labor organizations, academics, and environmental groups that advise the Secretary and the Maritime Administration on policies to ensure that the U.S. Marine Transportation System is capable of responding to projected trade increases. The Committee advises the Secretary on solutions to impediments hindering effective use of short sea transportation and other matters as the Secretary determines.

U.S. Department of Defense informs that a New York Harbor dredging contract has been awarded to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) and a Navy USS Jacinto drydocking contract to BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, LLC, Oak Brook, Illinois, was awarded a $17,027,415 modification (P00003) to contract W912DS-13-C-0045 for dredging shoaled material. Work will be performed in New York harbor along Newark Bay Port Elizabeth Channel, Newark Bay north and south areas, and along Kill Van Kull in the vicinity of Constable Hook and Anchorage Channel. Estimated completion date is Sept. 7, 2014. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York, New York, is the contracting activity.

Eastern Shipbuilding inform that Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC (GLDD) has placed orders for construction of a 433’ Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge Barge and a 158’-4” 15,600 BHP, CPP Tug. Named the GLDD302 (ESG Hull 252), the ATB Tug detailed engineering is being performed by Ship’s Architect, Inc. and the GLDD151 (ESG Hull 253), the ATB Dredge Barge by Bay Engineering, Inc. Both are  based upon an Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering, Inc. ATB design. This Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge, Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) Unit, will be delivered in 2016.

US Department of Defense contracts issued include a US Army Corps of Engineers, New York District dredging contract, for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock. Secondly a Navy contract to Electric Boat Corp. for work related to Virginia-class submarines. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company LLC, Oak Brook, Ill., was awarded a firm-fixed-price, option-eligible, non-multi-year contract for $20,684,610 for the New York and New Jersey 50-foot Harbor Deepening Project and shoal removal. Performance location will be Staten Island, N.Y., Bayonne, N.J., and Elizabeth, N.J., from fiscal 2013 other authority funds. NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco recently appointed nine new members to the Hydrographic Services Review Panel, a federal advisory committee that gives NOAA independent advice for improving ocean and coastal navigation products, information, data and services. “Optimizing the benefits of navigation services and products is a priority for the agency,” said Margaret Spring, chief of staff for NOAA and the agency’s representative to the Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS).

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC., was awarded on Sept. 28, 2009 a $8,126,971 firm-fixed-price contract for the maintenance dredging, Station 99+000 to Station 250+440, inland waterway, Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay, Delaware and Maryland.  Work is to be performed in Chesapeake City, Md., with an estimated completion date of Feb. 20, 2010. Nine bids were solicited with three bids received. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia, Pa., is the contracting activity (W912BU-09-C-0058).

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, Oak Brook, Ill., is being awarded a $9,584,080 firm-fixed price contract for dredging services at the Naval Submarine Base New London.  The work to be performed provides for dredging services for pier side slips along the waterfront quay wall.  Work will be performed in Groton, Conn., and is expected to be completed by Feb. 2010.  Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  This contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online website, with two proposals received.  The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, Norfolk, Va., is the contracting activity (N40085-09-C-7046).

Stephen A. Frasher has been appointed president and CEO of American Commercial Barge Line LLC as well as CEO of Jeffboat LLC, Louisiana Dock Company LLC and American Commercial Terminals LLC. With 31 years of experience in the transportation industry, most recently as president and CEO of Tidewater Holdings, Frasher’s hiring is part of a management transition plan for the retirement of Michael C. Hagen, who plans to step down at the end of October.

American Commercial Lines LLC announced that Stephen A. Frasher will step down as President and CEO effective April 30, 2004. ACL will make the following executive changes on that date. Richard L. Huber will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer of American Commercial Lines LLC. Mr. Huber has been a member of the ACL Board since 2000, and currently serves as its Chairman. Mr. Huber has over forty years of investment and merchant banking, international business, and management experience, having held executive positions with Chase Manhattan Bank, Citibank, Bank of Boston, and Continental Bank. He was most recently CEO of Aetna, Inc.
