MAN Cryo Ammonia Fuel-supply System Earns AIP

Alfa Laval Tallies LPG Fuel Supply Systems Order in Japan

Alfa Laval said it has won an order for three units of the Alfa Laval FCM LPG, the low-flashpoint fuel supply system (LFSS) developed in partnership with MAN Energy Solutions.The LFSS order was signed in December 2020 with IMEX Co., Ltd., which builds MAN Energy Solutions licensed engines in Japan as a subsidiary company of Hitachi Zosen Corporation. Caterpillar Marine has unveiled its second-generation Cat Marine Displays (CMD) used for monitoring all engine platforms, supporting different vessel applications for professional maritime use.The three CMD variants—Cat CMD5 (5” display), CMD8 (8” display), and CMD13 (13.3” display)—designed to provide operators easy access to current operating data and alarms for engines. ABB Acquires Tekomar

With its most recent acquisition, ABB has further expanded its ABB Ability portfolio of digital products and services with the addition of a new propulsion performance monitoring solution. ABB Turbo Systems Ltd. has signed an agreement to acquire Swiss headquartered Tekomar Group Ltd. ABB said it will further develop Tekomar’s digital solution for engine analytics and advisory systems enabling better performance for marine customers. The transaction is expected to be closed during Q4 2017.

John Deere Rolls Out Trio of Marine Engines

John Deere Power Systems has expanded its lineup with three new marine engines available for order from early 2018. The new 4.5L PowerTech 4045SFM85 offers high power to weight ratio for repowering and new vessel construction, and is ideal for planing and semi-displacement hulls, the manufacturer said. It has two ratings for light-duty commercial vessels, high-speed governmental applications and high-speed pleasure craft, which includes an M4 rating with 205 kW (275 hp) at 2,600 rpm and M5 rating with 235 kW (315 hp) at 2,800 rpm. Wärtsilä Dual-fuel Engines for LNG Carrier Newbuilds

Wärtsilä, through its joint venture company CSSC Wärtsilä Engine (Shanghai) Co (CWEC), has been contracted to deliver 16 engines for four new LNG carrier vessels being built at the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in China. The order was booked in August 2017. Each of the four 174,000 m3 capacity vessels will be fitted with four Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel generating sets running primarily on LNG fuel to provide the ships with auxiliary power. Wärtsilä 34DF Engines Certified EPA Tier III

Wärtsilä said it has been awarded model year 2017 certification of emissions compliance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engine family. The EPA Tier III certification and the corresponding EIAPP certificate were both issued in March 2017. The Tier III certification of conformity covers the Wärtsilä 34DF engines manufactured from the date of issue until the end of 2017. These are the first Category 3 Tier III certificates issued by the EPA to any manufacturer.

Emissions Control Takes Center Stage for Workboat Engines

Today’s workboat operators must navigate increasingly stringent IMO and EPA environmental and emissions regulations in and around ports and rivers. As the drama unfolds, selective catalytic reduction or SCR is emerging as a viable vehicle to do just that. Wärtsilä to Power First Dual-Fuelled Dredger

A new generation "Antigoon" class dredger, called Scheldt River, being built by Royal IHC in the Netherlands on behalf of the Belgium based DEME Group, is to be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel (DF) engines. This will be the first ever dredger to operate on engines capable of utilising either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or conventional marine fuels. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in July. The 104-meter-long vessel will have a hopper volume capacity of approximately 8,000 cubic metres. The scope of supply includes one 12-cylinder and one 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF engines, two Wärtsilä controllable pitch propellers and two transverse thrusters as well as the company's patented LNGPac gas supply and storage system.

Shell Offers Smooth Transition to ECAs

The shipping world has been settling down to new restrictions on sulphur content in fuel, introduced after January 1, 2015 in ECAs. Ships in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, and waters 200 nautical miles from the coast of U.S. and Canada now need to operate on fuels with a maximum 0.1 percent sulphur content. New Large Engine SCR Systems Debuts at Workboat

Tenneco (NYSE: TEN) has announced that it has introduced a complete urea dosing control, fluid handling and catalyst solution for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment, enabling large engines to meet EPA Tier IV and IMO Tier III regulations. The company will showcase the complete system at the 2014 WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, Dec. 3-5, 2014 (Booth #2152). CHALWYN Tri-Certified Flameproof Alternators

Standard automotive type alternators are a continuous potential source of ignition when operated in hazardous atmospheres where combustible concentrations of gas, vapor or dusts may exist. Chalwyn said its flameproof alternators are ATEX and IECEx certified for hazardous Zones 1 or 2, NEC 500 Division 2 and NEC 505 Zone 2. According to the manufacturer, this revised international ‘tri-certified’ upgrade is a benefit for companies who move their machinery between U.S., Europe and other defined international zones.

HERCULES-2 Phoenix Rises from the Ashes

Wärtsilä Corporation advises that the HERCULES R&D programme to develop large engine technologies, which was initiated in 2004 as a joint vision by the two major European engine manufacturing groups, Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel & Turbo, is to continue with a new HERCULES-2 project, pending approval under the Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The HERCULES-2 project is aimed at developing a fuel-flexible marine engine that is optimally adaptive to its operating environment. The work will focus on four areas of integrated R&D divided into Work Package Groups (WPG), as follows: WPG 1 - a fuel flexible engine; WPG II - new materials (for engine applications); WPG III - an adaptive powerplant for  lifetime performance; and WPG IV - a near zero emissions engine.
