Marine electronics company Furuno USA announced it recently hired Andrew Stradling as technical applications manager.Based in Seattle, Stradling will work alongside longtime Furuno USA representatives Alan Terry and Jon Closson for the overall promotion and sales of Furuno commercial fishery solutions in the Americas. In addition to managing Furuno’s specialty hydroacoustics product line, Stradling will contribute to the training of Furuno personnel, Furuno USA dealer personnel, and customers alike.

Furuno Equips Los Angeles' New Pilot Boats

The Los Angeles Pilot Service has taken delivery of two new pilot boats equipped with full suites of quality Furuno marine electronics. The 56-foot Angels Pilot and Angels Navigator have been outfitted with complete integrated helm suites designed to assist in their mission of piloting ships in and out of Los Angeles Harbor, the busiest seaport in the western hemisphere. The pair of Camarc-designed boats were built by Vigor Industrial in Vancouver, Wash., and have made their way to their homeport in Los Angeles.The helm suites aboard the Angels Pilot and Angels Navigator feature a Furuno black box NavNet TZtouch2 TZT2BB multi function display connected to both 19” and 24” multi-touch displays, the MU195T and MU245T.

Mackay Marine Outfits Kitsap Transit's New Ferries

Mackay Marine said it provided marine electronics systems and technologies for Kitsap Transit's two new 250-passenger vessels built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB).Bremerton, Wash.-based public transit agency ordered the new vessels in December 2018 to provide expedient commuter services to downtown Seattle from both Kingston, Wash. and a planned Southworth, Wash. route.The bow-loading fast ferries, built by NBBB at its Whidbey Island, Wash. shipyard, are state-of-the-art, low-wake vessels.

Based in Houston, Texas, Mr. George Toma will play a key role in establishing and developing business relationships with commercial ship owners, operators, and builders around the country to promote the Furuno product line.Toma comes to Furuno with forty years of experience in the maritime industry. He has served on the Board of Directors for RTCM (Radio Technical Commission for Maritimes), and received the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award in 2013 from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association.

New Ferry Seastreak Commodore Delivered

Seastreak’s newest vessel, Seastreak Commodore, has been developed in response to significant passenger volume growth and brings the operator’s fleet of Incat Crowther-designed vessels to a total of eight.The 45m-long, 600-passenger ferry built at the Gulf Craft shipyard in Louisiana is the highest capacity UCSG k-Class fast ferry ever built. Incat Crowther said it worked closely with Seastreak to develop the vessel’s layout and styling to allow 600 people to safely and comfortably undertake their daily commute.

Furuno DS60 DSL Selected for 200+ USCG Vessels

Furuno USA, Inc. said it has been awarded a five-year U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) IDIQ contract, valued at approximately $10 million, to supply Doppler Speed Logs (DSL) as part of the USCG’s Doppler Speed Refreshment Project. Furuno’s DS60 DSL will be installed on more than 200 vessels, ranging from 87’ Marine Protector-class patrol boats to the 418’ National Security Cutters, the largest class of vessel in the USCG fleet. Radio Holland Wins Contracts for Canadian Coast Guard Vessels

Radio Holland Canada has won two major contracts to support the Canadian Coast Guard. Public Works and Government Services Canada, which is responsible for government procurement, has awarded Radio Holland Canada a multimillion dollar contract to supply Furuno ECDIS and radars for the Canadian Coast Guard fleet over the next five years. In a separate agreement Hike Metal Products of Wheatley, Ontario has contracted Radio Holland to supply the Navigation & Communication equipment for six new Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Lifeboats.

Furuno's Bridge Systems for Holland America Cruise Ships

The extensive global network of Furuno service centers, subsidiaries and distributors was one of the reasons that Holland America Line (HAL) chose Furuno when it was time to retrofit their cruise ships with the very latest in a fully integrated navigation system. After considerable research in cruise ship navigation electronics, HAL selected the Furuno bridge solution and engaged Radio Holland to procure and install the equipment, starting with their first ship, the MS Westerdam. The large bridge features an impressive list of equipment including four Chart Radars (two X-Band and two S-Band), two ECDIS charting systems with Conning displays, an Autopilot, two IMO DGPS receivers, two AIS transmitters, a Track Control System to drive the Azipods and three Remote Sensor Displays.

Furuno's Ed Davis Passes Away

Ed Davis, an industry veteran and longtime employee at Furuno USA, Inc., passed away on April 30. Ed was Furuno USA’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager since September 1992, working closely with dealers who he not only called customers, but his friends. Prior to working at Furuno, Ed had his own marine manufacturer’s rep company, where he represented Datamarine International, Audiovox and Shakespeare Electronics. He first entered into the maritime industry in 1987 when he was hired as the Senior Product Planner/Buyer for Boat America Corp.

NMEA Awards Top Electronic Makers

Marine electronics experts named 11 products in nine categories as winners of the 2014 NMEA Product Awards. Once again, Furuno USA was named Manufacturer of the Year--Support. The winners were announced at the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) International Marine Electronics Conference & Expo, held October 8-11 at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott in Fort Myers, Florida. Category winners are chosen by regional panels of NMEA members from around the country, hand picked by the NMEA Awards Committee for their extensive knowledge of marine electronics to create a level playing field for all product and manufacturer support nominations. Furuno Debuts Remote Controller and Software

When Furuno added its Black Box system to their NavNet TZtouch family, it provided flexibility for captains that wanted a TZtouch system on larger displays. Shortly after that, Furuno introduced its new line of Multi-touch Marine Monitors that ranged in size from 17-24 inches. Customers then came back to Furuno requesting the added flexibility of viewing and controlling their TZtouch displays from a remote position. While Furuno offers its free “NavNet Remote” app for the iPad, some customers feel there is no substitute for buttons and tactile control.

Raymarine Autopilot wins NMEA-BWI Technology Award

Independent panel selects product based on innovation, benefit to boaters, practicality and value. Raymarine took top honors at the 2013 National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) International Marine Electronics Conference & Expo, winning the NMEA-BWI Technology Award for its Evolution Autopilot. The NMEA event, held at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina September 25-28, was attended by representatives of leading marine electronics manufacturers, dealers, distributors, media, and others from the United States and abroad. Named runners-up in the Technology Award competition were Nobeltec's TimeZero app (first) and Garmin's quatix marine watch (second).

Oceans '13 MTS/IEEE San Diego Preview

Heeding the call to join “An Ocean in Common,” authors flooded the Oceans ‘13 MTS/IEEE San Diego technical program committee with a record number of abstracts in a single day. Special topics include an Ultra-deep track discussing current and prospective robotic technologies, plus a panel of scientists to consider research questions. Oceans2013 Chair Bob Wernli, and Co-Chair Kevin Hardy, developer of the unmanned landers for James Cameron’s DeepSea Challenge Expedition, will be the session conveners. “James’ intention is to be certain the door remains open to other explorers,” Hardy said.

Furuno Launches New ECDIS

While there are countless new product, system and service launches at major trade fairs such as the recently concluded SMM in Hamburg, Germany, when a company with the stature of Furuno unveils a system, it is a show within the show. Furuno, a $1 billion business with 80% coming from the marine sector and 2500 employees globally in the marine sector, introduced its new ECDIS models FMD-3200 and FMD-3300, saying they are ready for launch during the autumn 2012. Tidewater Inc. Awards Furuno With BNWAS Fleet

Tidewater Inc., a provider of Offshore Service Vessels to the global energy industry, has selected Furuno USA, Inc. as a primary supplier for their BNWAS (Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm System) needs. With hundreds of vessels that vary from Platform Supply and Fast Crew Supply Vessels, to Offshore Tugs and a variety of other specialty vessels, the installation project will take the majority of 2013 to complete. Furuno’s BR500 BNWAS is a casualty avoidance system that monitors the watch officer's presence on the bridge.
