GE to Supply Equipment for Indian Navy’s Frigate
GE Marine will provide gas turbine auxiliary equipment for the LM2500 engines that will power the Indian Navy’s new P17A frigates. Two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines power the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces (JMSDF) newest destroyer JS Asahi (DD119). This first of two new destroyers in the JMSDF’s Asahi-class destroyer program was recently commissioned by the JMSDF. First Daegu-class Frigate Delivered to Korean Navy
The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has taken delivery of its first Daegu-class (FFX-II) frigate. South Korea’s defense procurement agency, Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) formally handed over the ship to the Navy, the first of an eight-ship program. Fincantieri Lays Keel for Italy’s New Amphibious Unit
A keel laying ceremony of the multipurpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock) was held Tuesday at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, marking the beginning of the slipway works of the unit. America’s aging, sole remaining heavy icebreaker suffered several engineering challenges, including flooding and engine failure, on its way to completing a recent mission in the Antarctic, highlighting the U.S.’ need for new polar icebreakers. Emissions Regulations Present Strategic Opportunity
The marine industry as a whole is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipbuilders and fleet owners have spent the last two decades adjusting to shifting emissions regulations since the introduction of the MARPOL Convention 1997 Protocol, which included specific regulations for the reduction of air pollution from marine vessels. Engine Contract Awarded for LCS 27
Fairbanks Morse said it has been selected to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) that will power the U.S. Navy’s newest Freedom class Littoral Combat Ship, LCS 27. Construction of the engines will begin later this year, and they are scheduled to be delivered in 2019 to Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, Wis., where the new warship is being built. The engine manufacturer will then support installation and testing including sea trials for the vessel. Designing the New National Security Multi-Mission Vessel
For more than 100 years the U.S. has depended on State Maritime Academies (SMA) to produce USCG licensed merchant officers. The SMA’s have also been an important source of U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard officers, as well as trained personnel for the maritime industry and electric power industries ashore. Key to training these future deck officers and engineers has been the annual sea cruise on dedicated training vessels.
