Inmarsat to Roll Out IoT Solution to More than 60 Zamil Offshore Vessels

Inmarsat, a mobile satellite communications services provider, will roll out an Internet-of-Things (IoT) solution to more than 60 of Saudi-based Zamil Offshore's vessels in the Gulf area.The solution - powered by Fleet Connect and Fleet Data delivered through Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress - will allow Zamil to identify, trial and select the best solutions to meet vessel performance expectations set by its charterer, Saudi Aramco. The news of the deal between Inmarsat and Zamil Offshore follows a successful trial on the fleet’s anchor tug, Zamil 57.

ClassNK Releases Remote Survey Guidelines

Classification Society ClassNK has released “Guidelines for Remote Surveys” in preparation for carrying out remote surveys using ICT (Information and Communication Technology). The guidelines outline requirements to apply to remote surveys for some types of occasional surveys, and from now on ClassNK will implement remote surveys that satisfy the requirements.ClassNK has been working on the advancement of surveys using digital technology in research and development in line with their R&D roadmap developed in 2017.

ONE Expands Reefer Fleet

Container line Ocean Network Express (ONE) is adding another 6,000 refrigerated containers (reefers) to its fleet as the trade continues to outperform that for conventional boxes.The new Reefer would expand its current refrigerated container (reefer) fleet of 240,000 TEU. Hyundai Merchant Marine Mulls Fleet Capacity of 100 million TEUs by 2022

The South Korean container carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has chalked out an ambitious blueprint for expansion.The ocean carrier's CEO C.K. MOL's Next-generation Car Carrier FLEXIE Series Wins Accolades

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)announced that the MOL-operated next-generation FLEXIE series car carrier received the Good Design Award  2018, from the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JDP).This year, MOL's FLEXIE won the award for the first time in nine years as the only winner from the shipping industry. The Good Design Award is in a program to evaluate and encourage design representing Japan, which inherits the Good Design Product Selection System (G Mark System) founded in 1957.Judges highly evaluated the design, saying: "It's great that the FLEXIE realized unconventional innovation as an outcome of re-defining the car carrier. Hyundai Merchant Marine Crosses 10,000 TEU in US Premium Service

South Korea's Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) said that its handling volume of US Premium Service reached over 10,000 TEU as of the end of January. Since May last year, HMM has provided US Premium Service in PS1, PS2, and PN2 routes connecting Asia main ports with US west coast including Los Angeles and Tacoma etc. With the Asia-US West Coast Premium service, customers can secure reliable cargo loading space even in the peak season and have priority to discharge their cargoes at the destination. Normally, it takes two or three days to receive cargoes at US west coast ports in high congestion. However, US Premium Service shortens the cargo receiving time two days earlier so that customers can receive cargoes instantly or within one day after discharging process.

HMM Rolls Out ‘-60ºC Ultra-Freezer’ Service

South Korea's Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) announced that it started its first ‘Ultra-Freezer’ service from Busan, Korea to Barcelona, Spain, based on its rich experience in the high-tech reefer container service. Ultra-freezer service refers to transportation of goods in – 60ºC, which are above the limit of regular reefer containers (– 35ºC to -40ºC). High technology and skilled personnel are also needed in the ultra-freezer service, as ultra-freezer containers need to maintain the very low temperature during shifting, loading, and discharging process. Due to such reasons, freight rates of ultra-freezer service are 4 to 8 times higher than regular reefer containers.

Inmarsat: The Future of IoT in Logistics

Unreliable communication networks may render logistics businesses unable to capture full value from the Internet of Things (IoT), says Inmarsat. Top three challenges to successful IoT deployments in transportation sector: IoT skills (54 per cent), integrating IoT with existing systems (43%) and connectivity (40%). The research by the global mobile satellite company for its ‘The Future of IoT in Enterprise – 2017’ report suggests that while 96 per cent of transportation and logistics organisations believe that the success of their IoT deployments is based on reliable ubiquitous connectivity, many businesses are still struggling to access the connectivity they need.

HMM Completes First Blockchain Pilot Voyage

Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) announced that it has successfully completed its first blockchain technology adopted pilot voyage. HMM, with other members of shipping and logistics blockchain consortium, have conducted its first pilot voyage from Korea to China (Busan to Qingdao) with reefer containers from August 24th to September 4th. HMM applied the blockchain technology to this pilot voyage - from shipment booking to cargo delivery - and reviewed the feasibility of adopting the technology into shipping and logistics. Combining the blockchain technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) technology was also tested and reviewed through real-time monitoring and managing of the reefer containers on the vessel as well.

Deloitte conceptualized this process and named it the Information Value Loop in 2015.

Vodafone announced today that it is working with Navico, an international marine electronics company, to bring global connectivity to Navico’s GoFree product suite. Using the Vodafone Global Internet of Things (IoT) SIM, GoFree can provide boaters, fleet managers, and service technicians with the ability to monitor, log, transmit and report important vessel information in real-time. With the connectivity, GoFree Track, an affordable hardware system,can track critical vessel information like engine hours, battery status, oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel consumption, and more. By tracking these on-board assets, boaters can instantly access details of potential mechanical problems and share them with technicians to service the specific area in need.

AT&T Network Connects Maersk’s Reefer Containers

A.P. Moller-Maersk Group has entered an agreement with AT&T to use its Internet of Things (IoT) technology to connect its refrigerated containers. In what is reported to be one of the largest industrial IoT deployments of its kind, Maersk is working with AT&T to track and monitor the condition of refrigerated containers with perishable goods.
