First Containership Receives LR Cyber Notation
The newly built containership MV COSCO Shipping Aries, recently delivered to COSCO Shipping Lines, is the first ever containership to receive Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive note “Cyber AL3 SECURE PERFORM” for its energy management system. Maersk, IBM to Launch Blockchain Joint Venture

ClassNK: Amendments to Rules of Container Carriers
PRESS RELEASE -- Classification society ClassNK (Chairman and President: Noboru Ueda) announced that it released amendments to its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships on 25 December 2015, including structural strength requirements of container carriers. China Delivers Large Containership
According to Shanghai Daily, the delivery of China's first self-made 8530-TEU containership over the weekend officially makes China the fourth nation capable of building super large container ships. The ship was designed and built over six years by the Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) with full independent Chinese intellectual property rights. The ship measures is 335 x 42.8 x 24.8 m, able to carry 101,000 tons and sail at 25 knots. Previously, the largest container ship China built was the 5688TEU. (Source: www.shanghaidaily.com)

ClassNK Drafts Amendments to Containership Rules
Classification society ClassNK has released draft amendments to its rules and guidance for container carriers, with the aim of implementing more comprehensive rules for increased ship safety. The amendments were approved by the ClassNK Technical Committee in Tokyo on November 19. The ClassNK Technical Committee is made up of representatives from the shipping and shipbuilding industries as well as scholars and experts to discuss matters relating to the establishment and revision of technical rules and guidance.
China to Roll Out Smart Crude Oil Carrier
China's Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC) is working on China's first smart crude oil carrier - a special project named "smart ship 1.0 R&D - which will incorporate technology to help the captain operate the ship. The Chinese state media quoted Guan Yinghua, deputy chief engineer of DSIC as saying that the project was assigned by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Guan said that the very large intelligent crude carrier will be the most important result of the project. She said the smart vessels represent the future.
Yangzijiang to Benefit From Ship Orders: Merrill Lynch
Bank of America-Merrill Lynch said that it sees Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ltd. benefiting from potential orders after a revival of interest from container shipping firms in larger vessels. The broker’s outlook came after reports that Taiwan's Evergreen, the world's sixth-largest container shipping firm, ordered 10 vessels with a capacity of 13,800 twenty-foot containers (TEU) each. "Evergreen Marine decided to lease ten 13,800-TEU container ships from Korea Infrastructure Investments Asset Management Co (KIIMA). KIIMA will place new build orders with Hyundai Heavy," the broker said in a report. Merrill has a buy rating on Yangzijiang's stock with a target price of S$2.12.

Hanjin Files for Bankruptcy in U.S.
South Korea’s troubled container shipper Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd has filed for bankruptcy in the United States to protect its vessels from being seized by creditors, the Wall Street Journal reported. Hanjin filed for protection under chapter 15, the section of the U.S. bankruptcy code that deals with international insolvency matters, on Friday to a court in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newark, New Jersey. The company’s filing for rehabilitation, akin to chapter 11 in the U.S., in Seoul has roiled ports in the U.S. and beyond, as creditors seized ships and terminal operators refused to handle cargo.

Reports indicate that Taiwan's Evergreen, the world's sixth-largest container shipping firm, ordered 10 vessels with a capacity of 13,800 twenty-foot containers (TEU) each. Last year, the world's largest container shipping company, Maersk Line, ordered 10 18,000 TEU ships and later exercised the option for another 10, sparking others like Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines Ltd to increase their fleet.
Giant CMA CGM Ship Vasco De Gama Runs Aground
CMA CGM’s mega containership Vasco De Gama ran aground off the Port of Southampton on the UK’s south coast just after midnight on August 22, 2016, reported Fleetmon. The damages of the 2015-built, 17,859 teu giant vessel are being assessed. There is no news on the damage as of yet. During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution. The ship was refloated within an hour and proceeded to the port where an underwater survey will be conducted. The local authorities reported that traffic in the area was not affected by the grounding of ultra large container ship.
Hanjin Orders Ultra-Large Container Ships
Asia Pulse has reported that Hanjin Shipping Co., South Korea's leading shipping company, has placed an order for ultra-large container carriers, the company said today, as the global industry competes to secure bigger-capacity ships. It is the first time a local shipper has placed such an order. Hanjin Shipping ordered five units of 10,000-TEU-class container carriers from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., the world's No. 2 shipyard, the company said. TEU stands for 20-foot-equivalent unit. The five ships, each large enough to contain 9,954 units of 20-foot containers, will operate on a trans-Pacific route beginning in February of 2010, the company said.
New Report Examines MOL Comfort Casualty
Following the loss of the container vessel MOL Comfort on June 17, 2013, ClassNK established a special Casualty Investigation Team in order to investigate and determine the cause of the casualty. Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) further established a Committee on Large Container Ship Safety to develop measures to ensure the safety of large container vessels on August 29, 2013. ClassNK serves as a member of the Committee and the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team is actively involved in its deliberative and investigative work.
NY/NJ Welcomes CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt
The 14,400 TEU capacity CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt became the largest container ship to call the port of New York and New Jersey when it arrived at the APM Terminals Elizabeth container terminal. The ultra-large container ship also established a new record as the largest vessel to pass under the raised roadbed of the Bayonne Bridge, which now gives air draft clearance to vessels of up to 18,000 TEU capacity. Until recently, container ships calling the Port of New York & New Jersey were mainly of the 5,000-8,000 TEU size class.
MacGregor Signs Loose Lashing Orders for Twelve Container Vessels
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, will supply loose lashings equipment for twelve 19,200 TEU container vessels under construction in South Korea for a European owner. The equipment is planned for delivery during 2016. The order was booked into first quarter 2016 order intake. The ultra-large container ships are being built at two shipyards. Six have been contracted to Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and the remaining six are under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).
Hanjin Makes Maiden Call to Boston
The containership Hanjin Milano made its maiden call at Conley Terminal Friday, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced. This is the first time that Hanjin Shipping has called the Port of Boston directly, opening a new channel of economic impact for the region. “The Port of Boston is the waterborne trade gateway for New England and a primary economic engine for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” said Thomas P. UASC calls at DP World London Gateway with Record Load
DP World London Gateway has welcomed one of the world’s largest container ships carrying a record 18,601-teu. The UASC-owned Al Muraykh called at DP World London Gateway to unload 3,800 containers. Al Muraykh, a new generation of ultra-large container ships, is one of the largest in the world measuring 400 metres in length. The containers are loaded 11 storeys high above deck and 23 containers across the ship. With thousands more stowed below deck, the ship can carry up to 18,800 containers.
EUROGATE Net Profit Up 13%
EUROGATE can look back on a good financial year, 2015. Despite difficult market conditions the European terminal operators Group increased its net profit by 13.4 percent to EUR 73.5 million (prior year EUR 64.9 million). Container handling at the German EUROGATE locations grew faster than the market. In Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Hamburg EUROGATE 2015 hit with 8.2 million standard containers (TEU) 1.5 percent more boxes in order as 2014. The entire North Range ports recorded in the same period dropped by 1.6 percent.
Mega-size Container Cargo Ship Arrives at Port Everglades
A mega-size cargo ship, the largest container cargo ship in the history of Port Everglades, arrived in South Florida this morning carrying cargo from Northern Europe to South Florida. Mediterranean Shipping Company's MSC Maeva - a 1,066-foot-long, 140-foot wide, 89,954-gross-registered-ton containerized cargo ship - is the first of three ships in its class that will carry cargo to and from Port Everglades as part of a weekly ocean shipping service. Previously, the largest container ships to call at Port Everglades were from an MSC vessel class of 997 feet long and 73,819 gross registered tons.
New Flagship CMA CGM Christophe Colomb
Last week the new flagship from the French shipping company CMA CGM came from Le Havre and, with a holding area capacity of 13,800 TEU as well as 800 connections for reefers and a deadweight capacity of 157,000 tons, it is currently one of the largest container ships worldwide. The container giant measures 1,199 ft in length and reaches a maximum draught of 50.8 ft when used to full capacity. CMA CGM deploys the CMA CGM Christophe Colomb in the Asia-Europe-Liner service “French-Asia-Line 1” (FAL1).
When Bigger Ships Can't Hold on to Records
The credit of being CSCL Globe for being the world's biggest container ship remained for a little over a month until the arrival of the MSC Oscar. MSC Oscar, sailed from a shipyard near Busan, South Korea, became the world's largest container ship last month, just weeks after the previous record holder, CSCL Globe, was launched. The MSC Oscar, operated by Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Co., is slightly shorter but is able to carry 124 more containers, allowing it to gain the title of the world's largest container ship.
