APM Terminals has awarded civil works and electrification contract for Maasvlakte II container terminal expansion in Rotterdam to CareGo, a consortium of ABB, Dura Vermeer and GMB.The expansion will cover a 51-hectare container yard, which will double the capacity of the terminal, making it one of the most advanced fully automated terminals in the world.The 51 hectares will consist of 31 additional yard blocks, quay area, truck and rail areas, and associated infrastructure.The Rotterdam Port Authority has already constructed 1,000 meters of new deep-sea quay for the expansion of the facility.

Moller - Maersk's container terminal operating arm APM Terminals announced the expansion of its Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam, increasing the terminal's capacity by approx. 2 million TEU The project involves a site of approximately 47.5 hectares with 1,000 meters of deep-sea quay. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is now constructing the new quay walls, which will be completed by mid-2024. The new section is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026.APM Terminals opened at Maasvlakte II in 2015 as a fully automated facility with zero carbon emissions.

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has set up a new rail shuttle to the Cabooter Terminal in Venlo. Under the new schedule, a total of three trains will be loading and unloading at this terminal every week.The trains will carry both import and export cargo. The new initiative doubles the number of rail connections between Rotterdam and Venlo’s Cabooter Terminal.“The shuttle to Venlo will help us to move containers more quickly from Rotterdam to the hinterland,” says Roy de Haan, APM’s Head of Commerce Management. “Venlo is an important logistics hub. The arrival of two new Super Quay Cranes at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, marked the start of a plan to increase capacity by more than 20% by 2019.The new cranes are built by the supplier consortium ZPMC/ABB and offer the same functionality as the terminal's existing eight cranes on the deep-sea quay: high-speed, remote-control, double-trolley SQCs with twin and tandem capabilities.Once the cranes are operational they will contribute to much needed capacity to help meet customers' growing requirements. The logistics surrounding the Port of Rotterdam are daunting. Eight deep sea terminals; 600 barges with 150 different owners; some 150,000 shippers from across Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany all relying on the port. The result is a fragmented and complex area - which especially affects the delivery of fresh produce. Delivering fresh fruit, vegetables and other goods demands efficient, timely and reliable logistics chains. From the terminals to the importers' distribution centres to the local European consumers, clean lines of delivery are key. It was that demand that led APM Terminals Maasvlakte II to develop a 'Cool Port' barge service which makes shipping in an out of the Port of Rotterdam efficient and reliable.

Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk said it has restored its major applications, as it brings its IT systems back online after being hit by a major cyber attack last week. "Today we can finally reopen our key applications," Maersk said in a statement on Monday. The company, which handles one in seven containers shipped globally, said it expects to have all its 1500 applications fully functional within a week. Maersk said on Friday it expected client-facing operations to return to normal by Monday and was resuming container deliveries at its major ports. Maersk's port operator APM Terminals said on Sunday that all terminals had resumed operations and that it would continue to increase productivity and available services.

The 20,568 TEU Madrid Maersk, launched in March 2017 as the first of 11 of the second-generation Maersk Triple-E vessels to be delivered to the global container ship fleet, called APM Terminals Rotterdam on its maiden voyage on the Far East-Europe (AE-2) service operated by Maersk Line and Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping’s 2M Alliance. “With this maiden call of Madrid Maersk to Rotterdam, we have yet another opportunity to celebrate our good cooperation with the city, the port and APM Terminals,” added Mark Cairns, The Netherlands Managing Director for Maersk Line. APM Terminals operates two terminals at the Port of Rotterdam, which is Europe’s busiest container port, and ranked 13th globally, with 12.3 million TEUs handled in 2016.

APM Terminals’ increased invested capital to USD $6.2 billion in 2015 as ongoing strategic plans to drive portfolio growth, improve productivity and safety performance, generated USD $4.2 billion in revenue, and a profit for the year of USD $654 million. Portfolio throughput weighted by equity share was 36 million TEUs for 2015, and when not including the divestment or exit of operations in Houston, Jacksonville, and Charleston, USA and a share in the Med-Center Terminal in Gioia Tauro, Italy, volume declined 1.1% from the year prior, while the overall global container market grew by 1.3%. Lower oil prices in 2015 affected APM Terminals bottom line, as reduced oil revenue resulted in declines in import cargo into oil producing countries in West Africa, Russia and Brazil.

The annual Terminal Operators Conference (TOC) in Europe was held June 9-11 in Rotterdam with over 4000 people attending the conference supply chain sessions, Tech TOC, Bulk TOC venues and exhibits. Alex Duca, head of design and automation for APM Terminals called for a sensor revolution. “We want to have sensors everywhere - on all moving equipment, on all operational interfaces and transfer points. Sensors give us data power and metrics - so we can make things better and improve services. A whole new world of equipment intelligence opens to us all. When you extend this capability across the port ecosystem we make quantum leaps in the business and the supply chain. We make our customers stronger, our companies better and our jobs more important - each of us has a role to play”.

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II held a ceremony  to celebrate the opening of the world’s most automated container terminal. The  event that was attended by Dutch King Willem-Alexander and 500 representatives of the port industry and governments from around the world. This is claimed to be the most technologically advanced and most durable container terminal in the world. Built on land reclaimed from the North Sea – the port is described by APM Terminals as an engineering marvel that will set the pace for other ports worldwide in sustainability, higher productivity, safety and innovation. The total cost of the investment is said to be EUR 500 million.

APM Terminals has signed a two-year, €5 million ($6.23 million) contract with Amsterdam-based NV Nuon Energy for the supply of environmentally-sustainable wind-generated electricity to power the new APM Terminals Maasvlakte II cranes and container handling equipment. The new 2.7 million TEU annual capacity deepwater terminal, scheduled to receive its first commercial vessel call later this month, will reportedly be the world’s first container terminal with zero emissions on site and off site. The contract term begins January 1, 2015.

Spend dollars up on dredging, cubic yards moved down. Combined with a reduction in the USACE federal budget, the situation threatens a perfect storm for domestic requirements. U.S. dredging this decade, measured in cubic yards, is only half as active as it was in the early 1960s, with maintenance down slightly since then and new work off considerably, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or USACE. The nation’s spending on dredging in unadjusted dollars has swelled tenfold since the 1960’s, however.

APM Terminals concluded a contract with Austrian-based crane manufacturer Hans Kuenz GmbH in combination with ABB of Sweden for an additional 22 Automated Rail-Mounted Gantry Cranes (ARMGs). The order will bolster the yard operation for Phase I of the new 2.7 TEU million annual capacity, deep-water Maasvlakte II terminal which will begin operations in November 2014. The 30-meter wide ARMGs will use a fully automated technologically advanced system to load and unload containers onto and off of external truck chassis, and onto a fleet of 37 battery-powered Lift Automated Guided Vehicles (Lift AGVs) in what will be the world’s most technologically advanced container terminal.

With little market growth likely over the next few years and significant port capacity additions due to come on stream, competition between North European container terminals is set to intensify, reports Drewry Maritime Research. In the search for volume, it will be the transhipment sector which is likely to be the first target. Cargotec will supply eight Kalmar super quay cranes and two Kalmar barge quay cranes to the APM Terminals Maasvlakte II expansion project. The cranes have an outreach of 25 containers, are semi automated and have twin lift and tandem lift capability. Dutch financial daily estimates the investments in the cranes to amount to some €125 million, 25% of total investments which include some €125 million for stacking cranes and smaller terminal equipment and €100 million for buildings and terminal pavement.

Cargotec has received a significant order from APM Terminals to supply eight Kalmar super quay (ship-to-shore) cranes and two Kalmar barge quay cranes to the company's Maasvlakte II expansion project. The expansion of the port of Rotterdam, Maasvlakte 2, is Europe's largest land reclamation project. It was started in 2008 with the aim to meet the growing demand for space and to maintain Rotterdam's leading role in Europe. Due to the expansion of the existing port to a total of 12,000 hectares, the capacity for container transfer is expected to double to 34 million TEUs (TEU is one standard 20-ft container) by 2033. Cargotec's Kalmar Monobox-type quay cranes will be operating in the new terminal area, which is currently being built directly on deep water.

Five  year,  global  agreement  to  work  toward  improved  productivity  and  efficiency,  land  utilization, environmental  sensitivity and  public  awareness  of  the  container  terminal  industry  APM  Terminals  and  the  Port  of  Rotterdam  Authority  announce the  signing  of  a  five-year agreement  of  cooperation  on  research  and  development  for  innovation  in  global  container terminal operations. Research  projects  will  be  undertaken  worldwide  under  the  auspices  of  the  agreement,  and  will focus  on  container terminal  environmental  best  practices,  sustainability,  safety,  cargo  security,  cost  reduction,  intermodal  movements,  supply chain  integration,  and  information  management.
