NYK Intros Compliant Additive for LSFO
The Japanese Shipping Company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) have jointly developed a new fuel-oil additive for low-sulphur compliant fuel-oil that meets SOx emission requirements.Yunic 800VLS (patent pending) is Japan’s first additive for very low sulfur fuel oil, or VLSFO. The additive improves safety by helping to avoid troubles that may be caused by certain contents of VLSFO.A global sulfur cap will enter into force on January 1, 2020, and one way ships can meet the requirement is by using VLSFO (sulfur content below 0.5%).

A keel laying ceremony for Dream Cruises’ Global-Class flagship was held at MV WERFTEN’s Rostock shipyard today.At 204,000 gross tons and with 2,500 suites and cabins, the new cruise ship designed specifically for the Asian market will be the largest ever to be built in Germany. Cammell Laird Leads Welding Research Project
Merseyside shipyard and engineering services company Cammell Laird has won a £1.5 million tender with Innovate UK to develop electron beam welding technology in the shipbuilding, offshore and nuclear sectors.Cammell Laird will act as primary contractor to test the equipment at its Birkenhead site using its team of welders and engineers, together with partners TWI Limited which will provide research, and support in welding codes and standards. Intended for a wide range of project cargoes and packaged goods, the vessel design includes composite tween decks to maximize space utilization and save weight. This tween deck solution was also awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) by DNV GL, presented to Sho Minami, the CEO of Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, by Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO DNV GL – Maritime.

Rolls-Royce CEO Says Not Happy with Pace of Change
The boss of Rolls-Royce wants to speed up change at the British engine maker, which is battling to recover from a string of profit warnings, saying more needed to be done to increase the group's resilience in the face of uncertain conditions. The British company, which makes engines for fighter jets, commercial aircraft, ships and nuclear submarines, is one year into a programme to cut costs and simplify operations after a slowdown in several markets hit profits. Mercury Marine Expands Manufacturing Capacity
Mercury Marine is adding a 53,000 square foot manufacturing capacity expansion to its global headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisc. The expansion will consist of 45,000 square feet of manufacturing capacity and an additional 8,000 square feet of office space. In addition, Mercury is investing in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to better streamline the manufacturing process and meet the growing demands in the marketplace. The new space will be completed in January, 2017. “This is an exciting time for Mercury Marine,” said John Pfeifer, Mercury Marine president.

ClassNK to Issue Guidance on Composite Propellers
Classification society ClassNK announced it will release the world’s first Guidelines on Composite Propellers (Part on Manufacturing/Product Inspection) on August 31. The strength and corrosion resistance of composite materials makes them widely used in fields such as aerospace, automobiles and wind power generation, and their scope of application has been further expanded due to their usefulness. The substitute composite material carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) weighs in at around just 1/5 of aluminum-bronze. Despite its ultra-lightweight composition, CFRP exhibits the same or more strength compared to the aluminum-bronze composite materials used in conventional propellers. Due to its light weight, CFRP propeller shafts can be manufactured with smaller diameters, reducing costs.

Wartsila Tunnel Thruster Gets LR Approval
Wartsila has successfully passed the final step of the Lloyd's Register (LRS) classification society's Type Approval process to obtain an LR Type Approval Certificate for the Wartsila WTT11 tunnel thruster. Having Type Approval means that the thruster will not have to undergo a design review for each individual vessel or hull number. It is anticipated that the approval certification will deliver significant cost savings, as well as considerable reductions in production time, thereby giving a shorter lead time for the customer.
