Zero-emission Bulker Design Gets AIP from Lloyd’s Register

Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) said it has awarded Approval in Principle (AIP) to Norwegian ship owner Egil Ulvan Rederi AS for its zero-emission self-discharging hydrogen-fuelled bulk carrier, With Orca. The vessel is planned to enter into a long-term transport contract with cargo owners Felleskjøpet Agri and Heidelberg Cement.With Orca will be fully zero-emission in all operations. It will be powered by hydrogen, stored onboard in compressed form, and the hydrogen combustion engine will be optimized for increased efficiency.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) said it has named Mark Darley as Marine & Offshore (M&O) Chief Operating Officer.Darley, who joined LR on graduation as a marine surveyor 20 years ago, is currently M&O President for North Asia and has held leadership positions in the UK, South Asia and the Americas. LR Approves New LNG-Fueled VLCC Design

The UK-based maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted approval in principle (AiP) to a quartet for an LNG-fueled VLCC design that uses a prismatic GTT Mark III membrane LNG tank.The AiP was granted to China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), CNOOC Gas and Power Group, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), and Gaztransport and Technigaz(GTT).The main objectives of the AiP include developing a specification for a dual fuel VLCC that meets the IMO’s GHG 2030 emission limitations and preparing the relevant design drawings.CMES and CNOOC G&P, with assistance from LR and GTT, also performed an economic analysis in terms of capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX).

AWO Approves LR as Third-Party RCP Auditor

Lloyd's Register has received approval from the American Waterways Operators (AWO) as a third-party organization authorized to conduct audits of AWO member operations as part of its Responsible Carrier Program (RCP). The RCP is a safety management system that provides a framework for the U.S. tugboat, towboat and barge industry to continuously improve safety and environmental performance. In order to be in compliance with the RCP – a condition of AWO membership – member companies must undergo recurring management and vessel audits by an approved independent third-party entity.

Darley Named LR Americas Regional Marine Manager

Mark Darley recently assumed the role of Americas Regional Marine Manager and President of Lloyd’s Register North America (LRNA). In these positions, he leads LR’s Marine business for the Americas region, overseeing commercial and business planning and developing strategy to improve the company’s competitive position within the region. He coordinates with the Marine Group in London and is responsible for achieving operational goals for safety, quality and financial performance in the Americas.
