Orsel Takes the Helm as ECSA's First Female President

Karin Orsel has been appointed the first female President ever in the history of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), starting on January 1, 2024 for a two-year term, with Mikki Koskinen joining as the new Vice-President. She succeeds Philippos Philis, who has held the position since January 2022.Commenting on her appointment, new ECSA President Karin Orsel said, “The strategic role of European shipping for the security of the Europe has come to the forefront.

Partners Plan Cargo Ship That Runs on Green Ammonia

A team of Finnish maritime industry partners are developing plans to build a cargo vessel that runs on green ammonia.Shipping company Meriaura, technology company Wärtsilä and green energy project development company Green NortH2 Energy signed a letter of intent (LOI) to develop the cleaner-burning vessel, which will be ordered and operated by Meriaura and equipped with Wärtsilä’s modular multifuel main engines. Green NortH2 Energy is responsible for supplying green ammonia fuel produced with renewable electricity.

Friendland Joins Meriaura Fleet

Finnish shipping company Meriaura, part of Meriaura Group, announced that general cargo ship M/V Friendland (DWCC 4450 t) has joined its fleet.Friendland (built 2002) has dead weight/volume ratio (7200 m3) and is therefore a welcome addition to the fleet, because the need for cubic tonnage is growing.Friendland has wide breadth (15,0 m) that makes her suitable also for carrying logs and timber, as well as project cargoes.The 2002 built vessel is time chartered long term from a partner, whose vessels Meriaura already has in its fleet."Our fleet consists of modern and versatile dry cargo ships and newly-built multipurpose deck cargo carriers designed for project and special cargo," said a press release from company.

Turku Completes Ship Recycling Project

The Ship Recycling project at the Turku Repair Yard in Naantali in Finland has been completed.In the three-year project, funded by Tekes, six vessels were dismantled and recycled on an experimental basis. The background of the project is the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, which states that after 2018, EU-flagged or European-owned vessels can only be recycled on shipyards approved for that purpose.In the past, majority of the world’s fleet has ended up being scrapped in Asia under conditions that do not meet European safety and environmental standards. Meriaura Aims for Zero-Waste Fleet

Finnish family owned shipping company is taking steps to cut vessel emissions through the use of bio-oil and low sulphur fuel, with its plans to create a zero-waste fleet in the future.Meriaura has been working with the Finnish Transport Safety Agency TRAF on a study looking at ways of reducing ship-generated waste. The group announced a research cooperation with TRAF in the end of 2018, aiming to reduce ship-generated waste.Meriaura has also joined Suomen Uusioraaka-aineliitto (Alliance of Finnish Raw Material Recycling).The recycled raw material alliance promotes the procurement, processing and use of recycled materials in an economically and environmentally sustainable manner.

Meriaura Signs Five New TC Agreements

Finnish shipping company Meriaura has signed new time charter-in agreements covering five vessels.The five vessels that will join the company’s fleet include a deck cargo carrier, two multipurpose-heavy lift dry cargo vessels and two traditional dry bulk carriers said a press note from Meriaura, specializing in the transport of industrial raw materials and project cargo on the Baltic Sea and in Europe.M/S Enough Talk is a deck cargo carrier of the same type and size as Meriaura’s deck cargo carriers Aura and Meri. Time chartering of M/S Enough Talk significantly increases Meriaura’s cargo capacity and position in the field of demanding project cargo shipments in Northern Europe.

ACO Marine's Clarimar Selected for New Environmentally Sound EcoCoasters

Wastewater streams aboard the two state-of-the-art EcoCoasters Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes is building for Finland’s VG-Shipping will be managed by a bespoke treatment system designed by ACO Marine. Both 4700dwt EcoCoasters Eeva VG and Mirva VG, due to be delivered this autumn to VG-Shipping, the ship management arm of the Meriaura Group, feature MEPC.227(64)-compliant Clarimar MF-1 treatment plants. Sacha Uittenbogaart, Sales and Marketing Manager with Technisch Bureau Uittenbogaart, ACO Marine’s Netherlands distributor, added: “Both vessels feature systems and technologies designed to reduce substantially the environmental impact of ship operations.

Radio Holland NavCom, VSAT for 4 Newbuilds

NavCom and On Board ICT specialist Radio Holland informs it has booked multiple orders in a challenging newbuild market. The company was awarded contracts to deliver and install the complete NavCom and VSAT packages for four newbuild vessels: two of the Meriaura Group and two of Eureka, part of SMT Shipping, all built at Royal Bodewes in Hoogezand, The Netherlands. “We have completed many successful projects with Radio Holland and are happy to work with them on these four new vessels,” said Johan Schouwenaar from Royal Bodewes.

Energy Efficient Dry Cargo Vessel Coated with Ecospeed

Newbuild M/S Eeva VG, the first of two very energy efficient dry cargo carriers managed by VG-Shipping, was coated with Ecospeed at the end of January ahead of her July 2016 delivery. Both new ships are VG EcoCoasters and will operate in the Baltic region. They are owned by Meriaura Group of which VG-shipping is a part. The vessels were designed as a new ship concept by Meriaura together with its partners Foreship Ltd and Aker Arctic Technology Inc. and are engineered to reduce environmental impact.

Thordon's Compac Ordered for 2 EcoCoasters

Thordon Bearings’ Swedish distributor, Duwel Sweden, has signed a contract with Caterpillar Propulsion for the supply and installation of Thordon COMPAC seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearing systems to the two general cargo ships Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes is building for Finland’s Meriaura Group. Each state-of-the-art 4700 dwt VG EcoCoaster, designed by Meriaura Group together with partners Foreship and Aker Arctic Technology, will feature COMPAC bearings, a Thordon Water Quality Package and a forward shaft seal in order to exceed current and anticipated environmental regulations.

Hull Form Optimization Yields Fuel Savings

Hull form optimization and hydrodynamic design contribute to fuel consumption savings to be achieved by a new generation coastal general cargo ship. Finnish owner Meriaura Group signed for two 4,700DWT Ice Class 1A VG EcoCoasterTM general cargo newbuilds at Dutch yard Royal Bodewes in mid-January, with the first due for delivery at the end of July, 2016. According to Foreship , hull form and machinery optimization are expected to almost halve fuel consumption compared to conventional dry cargo vessels of similar type and size, in turn making a significant impact on fuel emissions.

Deck Cargo Vessel Named at STX Turku Yard

Godmother of the vessel, Minister of Transport Merja Kyllönen, gave the ship the name “Meri”. The festive event held on the outfitting dock of the shipyard was witnessed by representatives of the client Gaiamare Ltd, the classification society Bureau Veritas and  STX Finland, as well as numerous other guests. The multipurpose vessel MS Meri, scheduled for delivery to the client in summer 2012, is 105.4 metres long and approximately 18.8 metres wide. This modern and environmentally friendly deck cargo vessel, designed for global operation, can be utilised for a wide variety of tasks. When delivered, she will be able to operate as a transport vessel for demanding project cargo such as offshore wind farm structures and for energy wood transport in the Baltic Sea area.

Keel-laying at STX Turku Shipyard

The keel-laying of the multipurpose deck cargo vessel, built for Oy Gaiamare Ab, was held at STX Turku Shipyard on Wednesday January 4, 2012. The NB 1379 is 105.4m long and 18.8m wide, and is scheduled to be delivered in spring 2012. Representatives of the customer Oy Gaiamare Ab, classification society Bureau Veritas, and STX Finland were present witnessing the keel-laying event. The versatile vessel is designed for transportation of demanding and heavy project cargo, such as offshore wind farm structures. The ship is also very suitable for transporting energy wood in the Baltic Sea region, and she is also designed to operate as a flexible oil spill response vessel.

Initiative Launched to Reduce Costs of Offshore Wind Parks

Achieving the Finnish windpower target by 2020 (6 TWh, approx. 2500 MW installed capacity) requires the implementation of several major offshore wind parks. The recently approved production tariff is not sufficient for implementation of offshore wind parks at the present cost level, and thus costs need to be reduced. Together with their customers, STX Finland, Meriaura and Hafmex have launched a ‘design-to-cost’ project, that seeks to significantly reduce the lifecycle costs of offshore wind parks. Demand for electricity is expected to grow in the coming years, at same time that prices are expected to increase. Metso Wins Major Automation Contracts for Advanced Ships

Metso has been awarded major automation system contracts for 3 advanced vessels to be built in Finland. One contract is for 2 Multifunctional Icebreaking Supply Vessels (MIBSV) by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Oy for Russian Sovcomflot. The second is a Multipurpose Deck Cargo Carrier by STX Finland Oy for Finnish Gaiamare Ltd. belonging to Turku based Meriaura Group. The MIBSV’s are designated for the Sakhalin-1 Arkutun-Dagi gas field and will be used as supply vessels for the Exxon Neftegas Ltd gas platform. They are designed for the harsh environmental conditions in the Sakhalin area with drifting ice and temperatures down to minus 35°C.

Navis to Supply Dynamic Positioning System to STX Finland

Finnish dynamic positioning system developer Navis Engineering has won a contract from STX Finland Oy to supply its NavDP4000 DP technology to Aura II, currently under construction in Turku, Finland and due for delivery in 2012. Aura II is a multi-purpose dry cargo ship and Baltic Sea oil recovery vessel that will be deployed by Meriaura Ltd, the Finnish provider of sea transport services for industrial products and general cargo. It is the first commercial vessel to run entirely on liquid bio-fuels and will be equipped with the Navis DP1 class system, meeting Bureau Veritas DYNAPOS AM/AT class notation requirements. The NavDP4000 is the latest of Navis’ DP systems, combining elements of its predecessor, Navis IVCS, with latest technology.

Wärtsilä Supplies Bio-Fuel for Cargo Vessel

Wärtsilä's leading engine technology offers flexibility which enables switching of fuels without any interruption in operation should the need arise. This will be the first installation ever where a European commercial shipping operation is going to permanently use liquid bio-fuel.
