Resolve Marine Group was awarded the prestigious AMVER (Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System) Award for work done by privately funded Emergency Response Salvage Tug the Resolve Pioneer.It was presented to Resolve by the United States Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Karl Schultz at the close of National Maritime Day and the NAMEPA Safety at Sea conference at the Press Club in Washington D.C. on May 26, and recognized the work done by the Resolve Pioneer under the AMVER system. The global AMVER network is more than 60 years old. The Director General of HELMEPA, Dimitris C. Mitsatsos and the Chairman of Dubai Council for Marine & Maritime Industries (DCMMI), Mr. Khamis Juma Buamim, signed the Inaugural Declaration to the formation of UAEMEPA, the United Arab Emirates Marine Environment Protection Association. The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) announced that Clay Maitland will receive the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award at an awards dinner in New York on October 26. Maitland, who is a Managing Partner of International Registries, Inc (Marshall Islands Ship Registry), is being recognized for his many industry accomplishments including being a NAMEPA co-founder. “Clay is one of the finest examples in our industry of a successful businessman who expends nearly as much energy on philanthropy,” said NAMEPA Chairman Joe Hughes. Maitland has worked in the shipping industry since graduation from law school in 1968. He was employed by International Registries, Inc.

Carleen Lyden-Kluss, Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Marketing & Communications, along with RADM Cari B. Thomas of the United States Coast Guard were recently appointed IMO Maritime Ambassadors by the International Maritime Organization. The two were nominated for this positon by the United States Coast Guard. An IMO Ambassador is an advocate for maritime and seafaring professions and actively conducts community outreach activities which encourage young people to consider careers at sea or in the maritime industry. IMO Maritime Ambassadors are encouraged to share their passion about the maritime world with others, particularly young people who are starting out on their further education, apprenticeships and career pathways.

North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will hold its Environmental Intelligence in Shipping Conference on “Pathways to Sustainability” on Februar 5, 2016 at SeaRiver Maritime in Spring, Texas. The conference is designed to be a guide for navigating through the myriad of regulations leading to compliance. The maritime industry faces continual regulatory change as it strives to reduce its impact on the marine environment. NAMEPA members, in particular, are committed to “Save our Seas”, but this approach is not without its hurdles. Complex regulations require support to insure understanding and competence and to devise an appropriate strategy for each company. Discussion topics will include Global Projections for Shipping, Regulatory Outlook and Legal Hot Spots.

Hardly a month goes by when another illegal maritime dumping violation is reported. Most violations, prosecuted in the United States, are based on false or fraudulent entries in the oil record book of a foreign-flag ship. Often, evidence of a “magic pipe” installation is found upon inspection in a United States port. While not all such reported cases are successfully prosecuted, most are, with the help of a whistleblower aboard the ship. The steady stream of such violations is convincing evidence that prosecution alone is not an effective deterrent.

Crowley Maritime Corp. announced that 65 of its vessels were recently recognized for participation in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) program, a computer-based voluntary global ship reporting system used worldwide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea. The awards were given during the U.S. Coast Guard’s NAMEPA Safety at Sea Seminar dinner, an event designed to bring industry and government leaders together each year in Washington D.C. All 65 Crowley vessels were given a certificate of merit for participation, with eight company vessels receiving additional pennants for their continuous, long-term dedication to the program.

The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) is set to host an Environmental Intelligence in Maritime Seminar Series to focus on Port Waste Reception Facilities. The seminar, to be held in Norfolk, Virginia on April 16, will include speakers and discussion from regulators, industry and port interests. “MARPOL regulations include requirements for port waste receptions facilities. These facilities are often not available, not ‘affordable,’ or not operationally practical,” stated NAMEPA’s Executive Director, Carleen Lyden-Kluss.

The State University of New York Maritime College’s 140th Anniversary Speaker Series presented a panel discussion on March 26 in the College’s Maritime Academic Center. The topic was Environmental Issues in Shipping. Panelists included Michael C. Carter, Director of the Office of Environment, U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration; John Hatley, Americas Vice President Ship Power, Wärtsilä North America; and Paal Johansen, Vice President and Regional Director, Regional Office Americas Houston, DNV GL – Maritime. NAMEPA (North American Marine Environment Protection Association) and the Ocean Conservancy signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) this month, the two group announced in a press release. The agreement aims to foster a collaborative effort that encourages marine pollution prevention, advocates for sensible and sustainable marine environmental practices, and heightens public awareness of impacts and mitigation techniques of marine pollution. Marine debris is one of the most universal problems we face when it comes to having clean and healthy oceans. A primary goal of the MOU is to establish Marina Cleanup Day this June, and encourage recreational boaters and marina staff across the country to help remove trash before it reaches our oceans.

Students in grades K-12 are invited to participate in a North American art contest sponsored by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), the U.S. Coast Guard, and Sea Research Foundation. More than 90% of the world’s goods are transported by ships. In fact, ships are truly the “engines of globalization.” Transporting goods by sea is more environmentally friendly than moving goods the same distance by air or over land and help keep the cost of goods and energy low. Students are asked to find a creative way to answer the following question: “How does the marine industry affect your everyday life?” The term “marine” refers to oceans, waterways and organisms that call these places home.
