Hepburn and Sons Secures NSRP Award

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded Hepburn and Sons LLC with the R&D Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) Standard Interface to Naval Electrical Equipment.The team consist of Hepburn and Sons LLC, TEFELEN, NSWCPD, GD-Bath Iron Works, RSL Fiber, AeroNav, Staubli, FSU CAPS, KATO Engineering, Northrop Grumman Sykesville, General Atomics, Rolls Royce, ABS, ABB, DRS, and Roxtec. The NSRP investment is $1.14 million and the industry investment is $1.14 million. The duration of the project is 24 Months.The scope of this project is to conduct research and test a common connector that will work with the majority of electrical equipment installed on board Navy ships.

Hepburn and Sons Gets NSRP Nod Insulated Bus Pipe Support

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded Hepburn and Sons LLC with the Qualification Testing of Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) for Shipboard Introduction as a follow up on the Land Based Case Study of Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) for Ship Design. Hepburn and Sons LLC leads their team members including TEFELEN, AeroNav Laboratories, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, and RSL Fiber Systems in the project. Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls shipbuilding will be the supporting shipyards.

Roxtec reports that it has more than doubled its fire resistance testing capacity, opening in Sweden a new laboratory that creates conditions for continuous development of safety products.The fire lab is located at the Roxtec headquarters in Karlskrona, Sweden, and it will play a key role in the product development and pre-certification process for the sealing solutions. St. Johns Ship Building Inc. in Palatka, Fla. ensures watertight pipe penetrations in decks and bulkheads by using the Roxtec SPM seal. When building the tug Delaware, the shipyard also used the seal as vibration hanger in the compartments. “Roxtec seals have greatly simplified our pipe installations,” said pipe manager William Mann. The pipe installation team used to weld in a steel fitting and install a screw pipe. This work took time, and occasionally caused issues with dissimilar metals. “We are able to work much more efficiently with the Roxtec SPM seals,” said William Mann.

Roxtec Services Expands in North America

Global safety seal provider Roxtec said it has launched its second specialized service company offering inspections and maintenance of cable and pipe transits. The new Roxtec Services US LLC is a subsidiary of Roxtec Services AB. It is based in Houston, Texas, and will cover ships and offshore units all over North America.    Roxtec Services US LLC has already begun working on inspection projects. The services include inspections, maintenance and repair work concerning cable and pipe transits.   “We established Roxtec Services AB in 2016 because we know many existing ships and rigs do not meet official safety requirements. By offering our services we can contribute to increased safety for people and assets,” said Fredrik Timonen, Managing Director of Roxtec Services AB.

Roxtec Sees Rise in Cruise Ship Repair Work

Manchester cable safety seal manufacturer Roxtec has reported increased demand for its cruise ship cable and pipe seals. The firm has seen a 67 percent rise in sales for its watertight pipe and cable seals in the U.K. marine market in the last 12 months. Roxtec UK managing director Graham O’Hare said the firm’s plastic pipe seals are suited for cruise liners as they help reduce weight, ensuring operators use less fuel, lower a ship’s emissions and save money. “Roxtec seals can be used on deck penetrations and bulkheads and are increasingly being used on marine equipment too,” he said.

Roxtec Seals for Floating Tidal Turbine

Roxtec provided its waterproof sealing solution to what is called  the largest and most powerful tidal turbine in the world. Roxtec UK managing director Graham O’Hare said the deal with Scotrenewables Tidal Power Limited involved Roxtec supplying the new SR2000 2MW floating turbine which is 65m long, 3m diameter and weighs 550 tons. “The turbine was built in Orkney and at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, and Roxtec provided support at both locations throughout the project,” O’Hare said.

North Sea Accommodation Module Sealed with Roxtec

Global safety seal manufacturer Roxtec has completed a project supplying cable and pipe seals to a six level accommodation module on the Golden Eagle development. The living quarters houses 70 self-contained cabins for up to 140 people. It also includes a gymnasium, dining room, offices and a medical suite.
