A consortium made up of global energy and shipping organisations announced on Wednesday that they will start a project to build and test a carbon capture system onboard an oil tanker for the next two years.The project onboard a medium-range tanker owned by shipping firm Stena Bulk is targetting at least 30% absolute carbon dioxide capture, or about 1,000 kilogramme per hour, the companies said in a joint press release on the sidelines of the Singapore International Bunkering Conference and Exhibition (SIBCON) 2022.It is being carried out by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) in Singapore, the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI)…

The U.S. Navy Military Sealift Command (MSC) has awarded GE Power Conversion an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract to maintain the electric and hybrid electric power and propulsion systems aboard its vessels. The five-year contract potentially could be worth $125 million.The contract covers maintenance, modernization and upgrades, training, repairs, parts, remote technical support, and program management on 35 vessels, with more ships to be added as they are built and turned over to MSC after commissioning.

The crew of a Dutch cargo ship was evacuated in stormy weather off the coast of Norway late on Monday, leaving the abandoned vessel adrift and in danger of sinking and causing an oil spill, local authorities said on Tuesday.Footage released by the Norwegian Rescue Coordination Centre showed some of the 12 crew members jumping into the ocean from the badly listing Eemslift Hendrika before being rescued by helicopter. FueLNG, a joint venture between Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M) and Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd, has set a new industry milestone for Singapore by completing its 100th LNG bunkering operation.Since May 2018, FueLNG has been providing truck-to-ship LNG bunkering for two dual-fuel tugs operated by Keppel Smit Towage.FueLNG is also able to provide LNG for the commissioning of LNG systems and machinery, and trials for gas-fueled vessels. In September 2017, FueLNG completed its first operation and provided LNG for the commissioning of the floating liquefaction vessel Hilli Episeyo.“This milestone is testament to FueLNG’s ability to provide safe, cost-efficient and reliable LNG bunkering for our clients,” said Chris Ong, Chairman, FueLNG and CEO, Keppel O&M.

Shipbuilder Incat has launched the 110m vehicle / passenger ferry from the shipyard at Derwent Park in Hobart Tasmania. Finland's main port Port of Helsinki Ltd is preparing for the implementation of the requirements of the EU’s Port Services Regulation by transferring ship services covered by the regulation to a subsidiary company.From 1 January 2019 onwards, the new company South Finland Port Service Ltd, owned by the Port of Helsinki Ltd, will be responsible for vessel mooring and unmooring. Saab announced it has signed a A$24.2 million (US$18.5 million) contract with ASC for supply of an updated Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring System (ISCMMS) for four Royal Australian Navy Collins class submarines. ISCMMS provides maneuvering and fully integrated ship management of propulsion, trim, power generation and ship services. Deliverables under the contract include updated hardware and spares that addresses obsolescence issues and maintains regional superiority edge for the Australian submarines.

Over the past year, 29,646 seagoing vessels entered the port of Rotterdam, up more than 600 from 2016's 29,022. The number of incidents in the port fell from 159 to 129, and included one ‘serious accident’ involving an inland vessel that went adrift after hitting a groyne with its rudder. According to National Harbour Master René de Vries, the decrease in the number of minor incidents can be explained by the Port Authority’s investments in infrastructure in recent years: “Thanks to the new buoy configurations and dolphins, there were considerably fewer minor bollard-ship collisions and fewer barges went adrift due to bad weather,” he said. Efficiency in inspections continued to increase further in 2017, according to the port.

Hyundai Global Services (HGS), Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) newly spun-off company specializing in providing total marine services announced today it signed an MOU with KSS Line, a Korean shipping company, for entering into eco-friendly ship business. Under the MOU, two companies join forces to retrofit the medium-sized LPG carriers owned by KSS Line with Exhaust Gas Cleaning System. Ships equipped with the cleaning system will be able to meet the IMO’s sulfur emission cap of 0.5% even with bunker-c oil, cheaper than marine gas oil, and thus will significantly be able to lower fuel costs. From this month, the two companies operate a task force team that is conducting basic engineering of the system, and is scheduled to finalize detail engineering by the end of this year.

Seven of Chinese state departments are investigating four local shipping companies over allegations that they have levied arbitrary and excessive charges for port services following complaints from foreign trade firms, reports Reuters. The National Development and Reform Commission had so far found that some shipping companies “have too many items on document charges and unreasonable telex release charges,” the notice said. The companies are Ningbo Dagang Pilotage, a subsidiary of Ningbo Port Group, Nantong Youbang Port Services, Taizhou Dingan Ocean Shipping Services, and Dandong Dehai Ship Services, which operate at the ports of Ningbo, Nantong, Taizhou and Dandong, respectively.
