SHI Tests Autonomous Navigation System on Container Ship

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has claimed an industry first with the verification of its autonomous navigation technology on a container ship sailing between South Korea and Taiwan.The company installed its remote autonomous navigation system (SAS) and smart ship system (SVESSEL) on a 15,000 TEU class large container ship built at its Geoje shipyard. Norwegian ship designer and shipbuilder Ulstein has launched a new series of fish trawlers with state-of-the-art ship solutions for sustainable fishing methods and processing. The STM Validation project has installed the first Sea Traffic Management (STM) compatible bridge systems, connecting ships with shore based services and actors. All available functions are said to be working flawlessly, including route optimization and synchronized port calls, as well as sending and receiving route segments ship to ship. Rolls-Royce Signs MoU to Develop Smart Ships

Rolls-Royce and the Technology Center for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a strategic partnership to develop smart ship technologies. The partners will work on world leading research to develop fundamental technologies, such as smart sensing, digital twinning and integrated modelling which are essential to the development of future marine data based solutions. These developments will be applied to technology demonstrators to show how they can be used by specific ship types.

DNV GL Sees Hybrid Propulsion, Connectivity as Hot Trends

Hybrid propulsion systems and connected ship solutions are emerging technologies that are gaining ground faster than expected, according to Tor E. Svensen, CEO DNV GL – Maritime, giving an update on the classification society's Shipping 2020 report. "While operational efficiency and emissions reductions are the main motivators behind these developments, the update shows that the future fuel mix will be much more diverse," Svensen said. Though LNG as a ship fuel was one of the standouts in the 2012 report, its prediction of up to 1,000 LNG-fueled vessels by 2020 will most likely not be met, due to continuing high investment costs and slower development of infrastructure. However, as more bunkering options come in place, growth could accelerate, he added.

Rolls-Royce Selects Paramarine Ship Design Software

Paramarine software, developed by QinetiQ GRC, has been selected by Rolls-Royce who is broadening its ship design capabilities. Paramarine will be Rolls-Royce’s marine design software tool of choice in support of their newly formed team dedicated to the development of naval ship designs. Rolls-Royce has been at the forefront of innovative ship design for nearly 40 years, designing over 800 vessels, used mainly in the commercial sector. This new ship design team will create innovative designs for customers such as navies, coast guards and other maritime agencies. The primary focus will be on offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and naval auxiliary opportunities, rather than large combatant ships such as frigates and destroyers.

Imtech Marine Reshapes Radio Holland US Ops

Imtech Marine will reshape its Radio Holland organization in the US. Key initiatives include the expansion of the service network to an increased number of ports; the broadening of the product portfolio; the consolidation of service dispatch and back office functions into one central location; and the increase of flexibility of the current logistics operations. Radio Holland will place service engineers in additional ports around the US. Keppel Secures S$240M in Shipbuilding Contracts

Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), through wholly-owned subsidiaries Keppel Shipyard Limited and Keppel Singmarine Pte Ltd, has clinched new contracts totalling S$240 million. These comprise the upgrading of a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, the conversion of a livestock carrier, as well as the building of a diving support vessel. With these latest projects, the total value of new contracts secured by Keppel O&M in 2010 has edged up to S$3.2 billion. Raytheon Anschütz, Wärtsilä Supply Agreement

The German navigation system supplier Raytheon Anschütz has signed a new agreement with Wärtsilä Corporation, Finland. According to the new agreement, Raytheon Anschütz will supply their Integrated Bridge Systems for Wärtsilä’s total ship system solutions. “We see an increasing demand for larger ship solutions including machinery, automation and navigation", said Andreas Lentfer, Business Development Director at Raytheon Anschütz. Within the agreement Raytheon Anschütz will supply complete Integrated Bridge Systems. Wärtsilä intends to make its integrated packages, combining navigation and automation systems, available for all types of vessels. Wärtsilä services will be backed-up by the global Raytheon Anschütz service network and the central service coordination in Kiel.
