Coast Guard pollution responders, and the Fairhaven Harbormaster responded to a report of a large oil sheen in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts Friday morning. Coast Guard Evacuates New Bedford Fisherman

Coast Guard crews medically evacuated a fisherman at approximately 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, approximately two miles west of Block Island, R.I. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a notification at 7:52 a.m. from the fishing vessel Explorer, homeported in New Bedford, Mass., reporting that a crewmember sustained a head injury due to the parting of a wire. A Coast Guard Station Point Judith 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew immediately launched and safely transferred the fisherman to waiting emergency medical services at Station Point Judith for further transport to South County hospital, R.I. USCG Medavacs Fisherman

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported that rescue crews from Air Station Cape Cod medically evacuated a 25-year-old fisherman approximately 35 nautical miles south of Martha's Vineyard, Mass. Friday. According to the Coast Guard report, Watchstanders at Sector Southeastern New England received notification via VHF channel 16 at approximately 8:12 a.m. Friday from the fishing vessel Argo that the man was suffering from epileptic seizures. Search and rescue coordinators dispatched a rescue crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter. The crew arrived on scene at 9:35 a.m. and safely hoisted the fisherman who was then transported to Rhode Island Hospital. His condition at this time is unknown.

Coast Guard crews rescued two fishermen from a sinking vessel 10 miles south of Newport, Rhode Island, Monday. At approximately noon, the two person crew of the 38-foot fishing boat More Misery notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Massachusetts that they were taking on water and needed help. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and two 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crews from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill and Coast Guard Station Point Judith were launched.

USCG Medevacs 70-Yr in Province Town Harbor

  Coast Guard rescue crews medically evacuated a 70-year-old woman in Provincetown Harbor, Massachusetts, Friday.  Watchstanders at Sector Southeastern New England received notification at 9:06 p.m. from the woman's husband that she was bleeding uncontrollably from her mouth.  A Station Provincetown crew was training nearby aboard a 29-foot response boat small and diverted to assist.  The rescue crew took the woman aboard and transported awaiting EMS at the Provincetown Harbor Pier.  "We train constantly for at-sea medical emergencies," said Petty Officer 1st Class Andrew Stokes, a watchstander at Sector Southeastern New England.  He said because the crew was already in the area, they were on scene immediately and able to transfer care quickly.

The master of the 67-foot fishing boat Sassy Girl, homeported in Virginia, contacted Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders at about 3 p.m. reporting a crewmember suffered a hand injury and needed medical attention. The Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended a medevac and a helicopter rescue crew from Air Station Cape Cod launched. USCG Free Boat from Ice Near Woods Hole

A Coast Guard crew responded to a fishing vessel trapped in ice in Woods Hole Passage, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Saturday. At about 3 p.m., the crew of the fishing boat Capt. RM Chase notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England that they became lodged in ice while returning to New Bedford, Massachusetts after a fishing trip. A Coast Guard aids-to-navigation team aboard a 49-foot Stern Loading Buoy Boat from Woods Hole was breaking ice nearby and diverted to assist the four-person crew.

Disabled Fishing Vessel Rescued Off Nantucket

U.S. A disabled fishing vessel was brought in safely to shore early Monday by U.S. Coast Guard crews aboard the cutters Escanaba and Hammerhead. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Command Center in Woods Hole, Mass. received a phone call from the captain of the vessel Challenger Sunday morning, stating a line had fouled their propeller, and they were disabled and adrift 70 miles southeast of Nantucket, Mass. Search and rescue coordinators from the Sector Southeastern New England command center diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba and Hammerhead to assist.

Senesco Makes FTZ Application

The Department of Commerce issued a Notice stating that an application has been submitted by the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation requesting authority on behalf of Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (Senesco) to construct and repair oceangoing vessels under foreign trade zone (FTZ) procedures. Comments on this application must be submitted by July 7. 70 Fed. Reg. 29477 (HK Law).

Senesco Christens Double-Hulled Liquid Fuel Barge

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) has christened another 80,000-barrel, double-hulled liquid fuel barge. After a ceremony last week at SENESCO’s Quonset Point, RI headquarters, the Leo was ready to set sail for its Gulf Coast destination. The Leo was built for the Hawaiian Inter Island Towing company, which will lease the vessel to Sirrius Maritime of Seattle, Wash. Sirrius will then use the barge to carry fuel oil and other liquid cargo in the Gulf Coast.

News: SENESCO Becomes Senesco Marine

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) announced recently that the company formally changed its name to Senesco Marine and instituted a sweeping new design and build process to enhance the speed with which the company can design, build and deliver barges. Gary C. Schuler, who was recently appointed chief executive officer, said that SENESCO has grown beyond its original focus as a Southeastern New England shipbuilding company. "Our most recent double hulled barge was built for a west coast customer and we continue to see increased activity out of our New Orleans office," said Schuler. The change is not as superficial as a name change alone, however, and Schuler touted the company's new partnership with Guarino & Cox, a respected naval architecture firms.

Coast Guard Rescue Mariners near Nasketucket Bay

Coast Guard crews rescued two mariners from a sinking vessel in Nasketucket Bay, four miles southeast of Fairhaven, Mass., Sunday. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders received notification that a 20-foot fishing vessel was taking on water at 7:30 p.m. A Coast Guard Station Woods Hole 41-foot rescue boat crew and a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod responded immediately. Local authorities including Fairhaven Harbor Master and Fire Rescue, New Bedford Marine Police and Towboat U.S. assisted in the search. The rescue helicopter crew located the mariners one mile from the last reported position and hoisted the two mariners from the water. The mariners were transported to Air Station Cape Cod where emergency medical services were waiting.

RTC Acquires Senesco Marine

The North Kingstown-based Senesco Marine, previously known as the Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corp., has been acquired by Reinauer Transportation Companies LLC, according to a report in the Providence Business News - www.pbn.com. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The North Kingstown company formally changed its name to Senesco Marine in October 2003, when it also announced it was streamlining its design and construction procedures to speed delivery. It is headquartered in the Quonset Business Park, where it has a fully paved 25-acre new-construction facility, with more than 215,000 feet of covered floor space, and a 6-acre repair facility with a 1,200-foot-long pier in 35 feet of water.

Tug Runs Aground - Buzzards Bay

U.S. Coast Guard crews helped a Boston-based tug crew on Nov. 9 after they grounded their vessel near Buzzards Bay, Mass., around 1 p.m. No injuries were reported of the three crewmembers aboard the tug Southern Cross. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a radio call from the tug reporting that the engine room was flooding and could not be controlled. The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corp. (SENESCO) will build a 165 ft. dredge barge that will have the ability to walk along harbor floors. Boasting a trio of vertical spuds operated by winches, the forward spud will allow the barge to move without tug assistance. The shipbuilding company formed the agreement with Sterling Equipment of East Boston, Mass.; the project's completion is scheduled for April 2001. A subsidiary of the Cashman Group - a major New England contractor - Sterling's contract is the 10th barge project for SENESCO.

Reinauer Says it Has Acquired Senesco Marine

According to Providence Business News, Senesco Marine has been acquired by Reinauer Transportation Companies LLC. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. SENESCO has a fully paved 25-acre new-construction facility, with more than 215,000 feet of covered floor space, and a 6-acre repair facility with a 1,200-foot-long pier in 35 feet of water. Its 3,500-ton floating dry dock is capable of serving vessels up to 350 feet in length and up to 74 feet in the beam. Reinauer Transportation, based in Staten Island, N.Y., and East Boston, began 80 years ago with a single small converted fishing vessel transporting petroleum in New Jersey waters, and has grown to a fleet of more than 75 vessels. The company also owns the Staten Island-based Reicon Group LLC.

SENESCO Announces Barge Contract

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) has signed a major barge contract for construction of a 171-ft. hopper barge that will have a holding capacity of 2,750 cubic yards. Construction has already begun and is expected to be completed this fall. The barge is being built for Disch Construction of Summit, N.J. who will used the barge to transport dredge spoils. This contract coincides with SENESCO’s executive team expansion which includes the hiring of their first CFO. “The growing reputation of SENESCO within the U.S. shipbuilding industry continues to generate new opportunities for our 200 employees,” said SENESCO president Bob Jarvis. The Disch contract represents SENESCO’s 32nd new construction contract since it completed its first barge in 2000.

US Coast Guard Tows in Disabled Fishing Boat

The 86-foot fishing vessel Buzzards Bay, which became disabled with five people aboard 50 miles northeast of Cape Cod, was towed in by U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Harriet Lane on Tueday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England were notified by the captain of the Buzzards Bay at around 3:30 a.m. that the boat was disabled due to a main diesel engine failure. Harriet Lane, a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va., was diverted to assist and arrived on scene at around 8:30 a.m. The crew was able to safely put Buzzards Bay in tow at around 9:30 a.m.

SENESCO Names Schuler as New CEO

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Company (SENESCO) has appointed Gary C. Schuler, the former President of Stanley-Bostitch, as the company’s CEO. In addition to his new post as CEO, Schuler becomes one of two private investors in SENESCO having made a personal investment in the fast growing company. Robert Jarvis, who has served as President of SENESCO for the past two years, will continue in this position and also serve as the COO. Schuler has had a highly successful career as a senior executive in some of America’s largest corporations and he has also held senior executive posts and ownership positions with smaller companies. Schuler served as President of Bostitch for 10 years between 1980 and 1990, during which time the company’s sales grew from $100 million to $500 million.

SENESCO Wins Barge Contract

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) will build a 180-ft. barge at Quonset Point, R.I., for John P. Picone Inc., a general contractor from Lawrence, N.Y. This is the ninth barge order SENESCO has received since it began operations in November 1999. In addition, SENESCO has manufactured a number of barge-like structures or "floats" used in marinas for passenger, gambling and other craft in Lynn and Boston, Mass. The Picone Vessel will be used as a construction barge in the New York area. All five vessels built so far at SENESCO are deck barges and have the capability of carrying heavy crawler cranes.

Senesco To Construct For Boston Harbor

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corp. (Senesco) was awarded a $120,000 contract for the construction of four steel floats for Boston Harbor Cruises. Measuring 48 x 8 x 3 ft. (14.6 x 2.4 x 0.9 m), each float, which allows passengers to walk to the boats, will be utilized in the docking systems for the cruise line. With fabrication currently underway at Quonset Point, the project is scheduled for completion in mid-March. This is the second contract for Senesco, who just completed a 400-ton, $420,000 barge for a Boston construction company.

USCG Responded To Disabled Tug 18 Mi East Of Block Island

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to reports of a disabled tug 18 miles east of Block Island, Rhode Island, Sunday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, were notified at approximately 3:30 p.m., Sunday, of an engine fire aboard the 126-foot tug Viking. The vessel’s on board fixed fire-fighting system was able to extinguish the fire, leaving the vessel disabled with 10 people aboard. The owner of the tug dispatched two relief tugs to the scene. The Viking was able to restore their engines and are transiting to Buzzards Bay under escort by the tug Sebine. None of the ten people aboard the tug were injured, and no pollution was released as a result of the fire.
