AST to Supply VSAT Services to Spliethoff Group
AST Marine Networks, a division of The AST Group (AST), won a contract to supply Dutch shipping company Spliethoff with global VSAT and L-band satellite communications to more than 80 vessels across multiple fleets.Worldwide ocean transport and dry cargo specialists Spliethoff has chosen AST as its supplier of global satellite communications. Together with network partner ITC Global, AST will provide Spliethoff with a global Ku VSAT network, failover L-band services, hardware and bandwidth as well as 24/7 manned support.

Wijnne Barends to Build New Ships in India
Netherlands, based shipping company Wijnne Barends reports that it recently placed an order with India shipbuilder Chowgule & Company for the construction of six identical, energy-efficient vessels, local media reported. The shipyard in Goa will build this energy-efficient 4,200-dwt ship with a length of 98 metres. These ships will meet the IMO Tier III standard for reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions. These standards, applicable worldwide and aimed at the reduction of emissions of nitrogen dioxide, were put into effect for all newly built vessels on American waters in January 2016.
Terragon Trash Tech for BigLift Ship
Terragon Environmental Technologies Inc. and Marship Engineering entered into a contract with Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding China to supply a MAGS V8 for the new build vessel mv Happy Sun of Netherlands based BigLift Shipping (a member of the Spliethoff Group). Cleveland Reports Persistent Cargo Growth
Buoyed by increasing returns from its creation of the Cleveland-Europe Express (CEE) liner service, the Port of Cleveland continued to see record numbers in August, particularly in containerized cargo, the port announced. Port of Cleveland Awarded for Cargo Growth
The Port of Cleveland informs it has been awarded by the U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) for its international cargo growth. The Robert J. Lewis 2014 Pacesetter award, presented to the port by the SLSDC this morning at its monthly board meeting, recognizes growth in international cargo, generated by the port’s Cleveland Europe Express (CEE) liner service and its traditional line of non-containerized steel cargo. Spliethoff Chooses Imtech for VSAT Network
Spliethoff Group, one of the largest ship management companies in the Netherlands, has awarded Imtech Marine a three-year extension contract for the supply of a broad-ranging Ship to Shore Communications service on the global VSAT network of Radio Holland. Radio Holland is Imtech Marine’s solution brand for Nav/Com and maintenance. Amsterdam-based Spliethoff Bevrachtingskantoor BV and Radio Holland have worked together for decades and 27 vessels are already connected. Following the agreement made on February 17th, a further 22 vessels will be added.
Second Sailing Added to Cleveland-Europe Express
The Port of Cleveland and Amsterdam-based Spliethoff Group announced today their mutual intent to add a second monthly vessel to the Cleveland-Europe Express (CEE), the only scheduled ocean service for containerized and breakbulk freight operating between Europe and a Great Lakes port. "We are extremely pleased to announce our intent to add a second sailing to the CEE starting next season or perhaps sooner to better accommodate the needs of the containerized segment of the market, which requires more frequent sailings," said Will Friedman, CEO of the Port of Cleveland.
Port of Cleveland’s Express Service Underway
With the departure of the vessel Fortunagracht out of Antwerp, Belgium over the weekend, the Cleveland-Europe Express service between the Cleveland Harbor and Europe via the Saint Lawrence Seaway has officially launched. The vessel is loaded with breakbulk and containerized cargo and is set to dock in Cleveland around April 17. The Cleveland-Europe Express is the only regular, scheduled international container and noncontainerized cargo service on the Great Lakes. The Port of Cleveland and Dutch company The Spliethoff Group entered into an agreement in November 2013 to begin the service.
Port of Cleveland Plans 2014 Europe Express Service
The Cleveland-Europe Express Ocean Freight Service will be the only scheduled international container service on the Great Lakes when it kicks off in April 2014. “Currently, local manufacturers use East Coast ports to ship goods to Europe, incurring additional rail and truck costs along the way,” said Will Friedman, president & CEO of the Port of Cleveland. The service will be the fastest and greenest route between Europe and North America’s heartland, allowing regional companies to ship their goods up to four days faster than using water, rail, and truck routes via the U.S. East Coast ports.
Alfa Laval, Spliethoff Deal for Cleaner Ships
Alfa Laval signed a contract with Spliethoff, a leading player in the transport market. It covers the retrofit of a multiple inlet PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system on board one of Spliethoff’s vessels which operates mainly in the North European ECA area. Wärtsilä Powers Eleven Spliethoff Vessels
Wärtsilä has been awarded two large orders from the Spliethoff Group, headquarted in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The orders are for propulsion systems for eleven ships that the Spliethoff Group has ordered at the Ouhua Shipyard in Zhejiang, China. The Wärtsilä scope of delivery includes engines, propellers and efficiency rudders, as well as bow thrusters forming a complete integrated propulsion system for the ships. The new orders are for five 16,800 dwt Heavy-Lift vessels to be operated by BigLift Shipping, and six 12,500 dwt Multipurpose vessels.
Inmarsat Activates 5,000th FB Terminal
Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT) announced that it has activated the 5,000th FleetBroadband terminal. This figure represents commercially active SIM cards passing operational traffic. The 5,000 FleetBroadband terminals activated through Inmarsat’s global partner network make it the fastest adopted maritime service in the company’s 30-year history. The latest member of the FleetBroadband family, FB150, launched just 22 weeks ago, already has 500 terminals activated – a rate of adoption which is twice that of FB500 and FB250 at a similar period after launch. The 5,000th terminal was activated on Happy Rover, a 1997-build owned by Dutch company BigLift Shipping B.V., a member of the Spliethoff Group.
