Vessel Aground in New Zealand

According to the New Zealand Maritime Safety Authority (MSA), the Hong Kong motor vessel Tai Ping is aground at the entrance to Bluff harbor (located at the south end of South Island). The vessel is carrying 9,535 tons of urea and 350 tons of heavy fuel oil and diesel. While there are no reports of an oil discharge, the MSA has declared a Tier 3 emergency response. Follow-up reports state the response efforts and discussed response planning.

Coast Guard Responds to Delaware River Grounding

The Coast Guard is overseeing salvage efforts Tuesday for a motor vessel aground on the Delaware River. The 328-foot Netherlands-flagged motor vessel, Bermuda Islander, lost power and propulsion Monday at approximately 9 p.m. before running aground near Salem, New Jersey. No injuries or pollution have been reported. There were 12 people aboard the ship when it ran aground. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia are maintaining an hourly communications schedule with the Delaware River Pilots regarding the ship’s status. Towing Vessel Runs Aground in Louisiana

An uninspected towing vessel taking on water has run aground in Louisiana’s Calcasieu Ship Channel, early Monday morning. At 3:45 a.m., the three-man crew aboard the 60-foot towing vessel Mr. Landon intentionally ran the vessel aground near Monkey Island to avoid sinking when they realized they were taking on water in the stern. No injuries were reported. Approximately 10 gallons of oil was spilled as a result of the incident. NY Ferry Grounded

The U.S. Coast Guard responded yesterday to a report of a ferry vessel aground near Liberty Island. The Golden Sunshine, a 90-foot tourist transport based in New Jersey, ran aground on rocks on the northern side of Liberty Island while enroute to Manhattan at approximately 11:15 a.m. Coast Guard Sector New York received notification at 11:30. The vessel was towed into deeper water by a U.S. Park Police vessel. A New York Fire Department vessel was also on scene to assist in the tow. The Coast Guard Cutter Line was diverted from a routine patrol to escort the Golden Sunshine to its berth at the Liberty Landing Marina in the Morris Canal, N.J.

Research Vessel Grounding, St. John’s River

The Coast Guard is responding to a vessel aground on the St. John's River near Mayport, Fla. The 235-ft Motor Vessel Endeavour ran aground Jan. 6 on the St. John's River in Mayport near the entrance of the Intracoastal Waterway. The Captain of the Port has established a 50-yard safety zone around the vessel; all traffic should remain outside this zone for their own safety and for those crews conducting removal operations. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville is working with the owner of the vessel to ensure the vessel is safely re-floated mitigating the risks to the environment and Port of Jacksonville. At this point there are no risks to commerce or traffic in the channel. The cause of the incident is under investigation.  

Coast Guard Responds to Vessel Aground

The Coast Guard is responding today to the scene of a fishing vessel that ran aground in Mantoloking, N.J. The Coast Guard was notified a that the Danielle, a 48-ft. wooden fishing vessel out of Cape May, N.J., was aground on the beaches of Mantoloking. Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., were dispatched to the scene to conduct an initial assessment and survey the scene. The Coast Guard dispatched marine inspectors to the scene from Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia to supervise the salvage of the vessel and coordinate the removal of fuel, oil and other potentially hazardous materials

Marine Debris Vessel Aground in Hawaii

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Press Release stating that the Unified Command is responding to the grounding of a marine debris removal vessel on Pearl and Hermes Atoll in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. A subsequent Press Release states that the crew of the vessel has transferred ashore. The 145-foot vessel is leaking oil from its fuel tanks. A boom has been deployed. Rescue and response vessels are en route. A third Press Release notes that the ship remains aground. The crew and scientific personnel have been transported to Midway Island. (HK Law).

Salvors Delay Hoegh Osaka Refloat

The salvage team has decided to delay the refloat of grounded car carrier vessel Hoegh Osaka. The refloat was initially scheduled for Thursday, January 8, but salvors’ calculations revealed that more water has entered the vessel than was previously predicted, according to the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Thus, the preparation for the refloat will take longer than the weather window would allow, forcing the refloat to be postponed. Hoegh Autoliners said the ship’s crew intentionally ran the 51…

Response to Grounded Bulker Ongoing

UPDATE: U.S. Coast Guard responding to vessel aground in St. The U.S. Coast Guard reports it is continuing its response Tuesday to a 621-foot bulk carrier which ran aground in the vicinity of Wellesley Island in the St. Lawrence River, New York, Monday while transiting inbound from the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Port of Toronto. The Bahamian-flagged motor vessel Juno, carrying a load of sugar, is aground and taking on water in one of the forward ballast tanks, however, these tanks were empty prior to the grounding, and there has been no report of pollution.

NTSB Issues Report on 2016 Columbia River Bulker Grounding

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report on its investigation into the November 2016 grounding of the bulk carrier Nenita in the Columbia River. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was fully laden when it suffered an engine failure that impacted its ability to maneuver and subsequently ran aground at Three Tree Point on the Washington State side of the river. The ship’s bulbous bow and hull were damaged, but no injuries or pollution were reported. The vessel was towed to Longview, Wash.

Salvor to Remove Beached Vessel in Texas

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) contracted a salvage company to remove the threat of pollution from a derelict fishing vessel that went aground Thursday, about 20 miles south of Freeport, Texas, on Sargent Beach. The captain of the vessel Lady Glenda contacted Sector Houston/Galveston watchstanders just after noon Tuesday and reported the vessel Rich listing with marine growth and drifting about 20 miles southeast of Freeport. A Station Freeport 45-foot Response Boat — Medium boatcrew located the vessel that afternoon but weren't able to go aboard due to safety concerns.

Salvage of Ownerless Stranded Freighter Continues

Cutting  & removing sections of 202-ft freighter 'Jireh' continue in preparation for final removal of vessel from Mona Island, Puerto Rico. The Jireh ran aground on Mona Island June 21, 2012 with 84 passengers and crew. Investigators have not been able to find the owners of the Honduran-flagged Jireh or what caused the crew to run the vessel aground. Response crews working to patch and plug the grounded freighter found extensive damage to the ship’s cargo hold. The damage consists of multiple large cracks and holes in the Jireh’s hull.

Tug & Barge Aground Alaskan Coast Await Inspection

US Coast Guard Unified Command deploy survey & response inspection crews to the vessels aground on Ukolnoi Island, 40 miles east of Cold Bay. The five-person crew of the tugbboat Polar Wind was rescued Nov. 13 after the tug ran aground and began taking on water, reportedly while they were attempting to recover the barge after their towline parted. The fuel quantity aboard the Polar Wind is stated as more than 20,500 gallons of diesel and the barge is reportedly carrying 1,800 gallons of diesel and 90 refrigerated cargo containers, 30 of which contain frozen fish. The crews will conduct dive surveys, assess the hull condition of the tug and use sonar to survey the area around the vessels.

MCA Reports Vessel Aground

On Monday, Humber Coastguard were advised by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Humber that the German registered 2,551 ton general cargo vessel ‘Urte’, with a cargo of scrap metal had gone aground at the entrance to the River Trent. The vessel, which had eight crew members and a pilot on board, sustained damage to the bow. A tug was on the scene by early Tuesday morning. The VTS Humber reported the situation had deteriorated, the vessel had taken a sixteen degree list and was taking water over the port quarter. Humber private rescue launched and took all personnel off and landed them at Blacktoft Jetty on the River Ouse. Hull Coastguard was also in attendance.

Coast Guard Assists Vessel Aground in Alitak Bay

A Coast Guard helicopter crew assisted the crew of a vessel that was taking on water after it ran aground in Alitak Bay, about 60 miles southeast of Kodiak. The crew of the 86-ft. fishing tender Chichagof made a radio distress call at about 5:30 a.m. reporting the accident. The Coast Guard communications center in Kodiak issued an urgent marine assistance broadcast asking mariners in the area to assist. Two Good Samaritan fishing vessels responded to the call. An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew, with two dewatering pumps on board, departed Kodiak at about 6 a.m. Low-lying, thick fog hampered the helicopter crew locating the Chichagof when they arrived in Alitak Bay but was able to locate the stricken vessel within minutes.

Attempts to Move Containership CSCL Indian Ocean Aground in Elbe Successful

The last five days stuck in Elbschlick 400-meter (1,312 feet) CSCL Indian Ocean, the 19,000 teu vessel aground on the river Elbe, owned by China Shipping Group Co.,  is available again. After several failed attempts to budge the containership salvage teams were preparing to refloat the vessel during a spring tide on Tuesday. The attempt to tow the vessel was scheduled for 2 a.m. Tuesday morning when high water is expected to be 1.2 meters above the average high tide due to a spring tide. As planned, the towing test began around 2:00 PM.

Storm Causes Deadly Grounding in the Philippines

A storm off the Philippines caused a ship grounding incident in Antique yesterday morning which claimed one casualty, local authorities reported. The 18 other seafarers involved in the incident are reported safe. The Philippines Coast Guard’s investigation revealed that M/Tug Benny and its towing barge Brian took shelter at the vicinity waters of Barangay Balud, Tobias, Antique as Tropical Depression Seniang battered the Visayas region. Both vessels drifted toward the shoreline due to strong winds and waves. Twelve crew members from Barge Brian were able to swim towards the shoreline while the remaining seven crew of M/Tug Benny transferred to the barge waiting for rescue, the coast guard said. Coast Guard Responds to Grounded Vessel in St. Lawrence Seaway

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation are responding to the motor vessel Pacific Huron, loaded with soybean, that ran aground late Wednesday in the Saint Lawrence Seaway near Wellesley Island, New York. The forward portion of the 623-foot motor vessel is aground and their stern anchor is deployed. The vessel is 1,000 feet outside of the channel. There are no reported injuries to the crew, and no reported leaks, pollution, or flooding on the vessel. The seaway is continuing to manage traffic around the vessel through the navigation channel. Inspectors from the SLSDC, the Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation and a marine inspector from the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Massena…

Bulker Refloated in St. Lawrence Seaway

 A 623-foot bulk carrier was refloated in the St. Lawrence Seaway Saturday after running aground near Wellesley Island, N.Y. last Wednesday.   The Antigua Barbuda flagged vessel Pacific Huron was refloated under the direction of the Donjon-Smit salvage master, two Canadian tugs, the Evans Mckeil and the Ocean A. Simard. No injuries or pollution have been reported.   A pilot boarded Pacific Huron to navigate the vessel to its anchorage location at Mason Point.   On Sunday divers conducted an underwater hull survey, and the classification society inspected the ship’s propulsion system.

Fishing Vessel on Cape Peninsular Beach

The vessel has been on the beach for several days due to heavy surf. Most of those on board had been taken off the vessel, and all were safe, including the ship's dog. Disaster Risk Management spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said they would try to move the vessel again again shortly depending on conditions. Crowds gathered to watch from the edges of the beach, with others looking out from their homes, and above from Victoria Road, until rain forced them to leave. Taiwanese Fishing Vessel Grounds in Batanes

Taiwanese fishing vessel FV Jui Fa Tsai with five crew composed of two Taiwanese and three Indonesian nationals ran aground at vicinity 16 nautical miles Northeast off Itbayat Island, Batanes on April 1, 2014 at 6:50 a.m. Immediately, Coast Guard District North Eastern Luzon was alerted and directed to dispatch a Search and Rescue Team to render necessary assistance. A Notice to All Mariners (NOTAM) was also issued to all ships/watercrafts transiting within the area of incident to be on the look-out for possible sightings of the aground foreign vessel and to render necessary assistance. PCG Batanes immediately sent a SAR team in the area while Taiwan Coast Guard immediately coordinated with PCG and DFA for the dispatch of TCG vessel for SAR operations. At 3:39 p.m.

Merchant Vessel Aground in Saint Marys River

A 629-foot U.S. cargo ship ran aground on the north side of Sugar Island in the St. Marys River, Wednesday at 11:40 p.m. The merchant vessel Calumet departed ESSAR Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and was transiting downbound in the St. Marys River to its next port of call in Brevort, Michigan, when it ran aground. The U.S. Coast Guard is on scene and no injuries have been reported. The vessel is currently aground and stable. There are currently no signs of pollution. The St. Marys River is closed to commercial vessels from the Soo Locks to 6 Mile Point. The vessel’s company, Grand River Navigation Inc., is taking precautionary measures to help ensure the safety of the environment and developing a salvage plan. Euronav VLCC Aground near Indonesia

MT Alex, a very large crude carrier (VLCC) owned by Belgian tanker company Euronav Ship Management ran aground in Java Sea. The DWT 299,446 vessel, in laden condition, was sailing between Borneo and Sumatra on its way to Ningbo, China under load of crude oil, when she ran aground on a soft mud bottom. No injuries or pollution have been reported while the vessel remains safely aground, in good weather. No breach of hull, water ingress or mechanical failure are apparent in the assessment made by the crew, while the Class surveyor is expected to board as soon as possible. In a statement Euronav said that it has activated its emergency response plan and has notified all the relevant authorities; the emergency team is assessing the options for refloating the vessel.
