GE’s First IMO Tier III Marine Diesel Engines Ordered

Bastø Fosen has placed an order for eight of GE Marine’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III compliant marine diesel engines for new and repowered vessels. The order, which includes six eight-cylinder in-line engines for three new ferries and two 16-cylinder V engines to repower two existing vessels, Bastø I and Bastø II, will see Bastø Fosen be among the first customers in Northern Europe to operate GE’s diesel engines that meet IMO Tier III emissions standards without Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment or urea injection.

Two US Firms Collaborate on SCR Design

Tenneco and Cormetech sign agreement to design marine engine ultra-large diameter selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts. The MARPOL Annex VI and EPA Tier IV regulations require an 80% reduction in NOx emissions, thus driving the need for engines to include aftertreatment strategies such as SCR. Tenneco’s SCR solution, incorporating the Cormetech catalyst, will be designed to help the marine industry comply with the new emission regulations. “Tenneco is an established leader in designing and developing diesel aftertreatment solutions, supplying commercial vehicle and engine manufacturers globally,” said Tim Jackson, Tenneco chief technology officer. “For more than 20 years, Cormetech has provided reliable state-of-the-art SCR catalyst for the reduction of NOx emissions.

New Cummins Tier 4 Diesel Engines Hit the Market

Cummins Power Generation launched two new diesel G-drive engines from 240-433 horsepower that are certified to meet EPA Tier 4 Final emissions regulations for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM or soot) without the use of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Instead, the new engines employ a combination of in-cylinder combustion improvements, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment. These new engines are suitable for powering generators from 150-300kVA.

The Rolls-Royce brand MTU is showing its concepts at the current SMM, Hamburg, in response to the IMO Tier III emission standard which is due to come into force in 2016. “MTU is well-prepared for IMO Tier III, be it with SCR exhaust aftertreatment systems for diesel engines or with gas engines,” explains Dr. Michael Haidinger, Chief Sales Officer at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. In an animated presentation, MTU is demonstrating the latest high-speed Series 4000 gas engine based on its trusted 4000 M63 diesel engine which is widely used in working vessels.

New Large Engine SCR Systems Debuts at Workboat

Tenneco (NYSE: TEN) has announced that it has introduced a complete urea dosing control, fluid handling and catalyst solution for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment, enabling large engines to meet EPA Tier IV and IMO Tier III regulations. The company will showcase the complete system at the 2014 WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, Dec. 3-5, 2014 (Booth #2152). The system is designed specifically for high-horsepower engines in the marine, stationary and locomotive markets, providing precise and reliable delivery of liquid urea.

Emissions Control Takes Center Stage for Workboat Engines

Today’s workboat operators must navigate increasingly stringent IMO and EPA environmental and emissions regulations in and around ports and rivers. As the drama unfolds, selective catalytic reduction or SCR is emerging as a viable vehicle to do just that. At the same time, fears about space constraints for smaller vessels and the hassle of carrying and handing urea for these systems are rapidly evaporating, as well. Rolls-Royce Power Systems informs it is investing in the development of the next generation of ecological sound and cost efficient combustion engines at MTU, a brand in the Rolls-Royce Land & Sea division. With the first new test stands entering service today in Friedrichshafen, MTU’s lead site and main R&D location, Rolls-Royce said it has invested some 40 million euros in the new testing facilities at MTU. New MTU Engines Make Their Debut

At the international maritime exhibition Nor-Shipping in Oslo from May 30 to June 2 2017, MTU, part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, presented its propulsion and systems portfolio, primarily for offshore supply vessels, workboats and ferries. This included Series 2000, 4000 and 8000 propulsion engines in an output range from 400 to 10,000 kW, hybrid propulsion solutions and diesel electric propulsion systems and diesel gensets for the supply of on-board power. Rolls-Royce showcased MTU’s Series 4000 diesel engine meeting IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emission regulations.

ClassNK: Guidelines for SCR and Reductant Agent Supply Systems

ClassNK has announced the release of its new Guideline for SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Systems and Reductant Agent Supply Systems. The new guidelines address the strengthening of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission regulations as stipulated in amendments to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships 1973 (MARPOL) which entered into force on 1 July 2010. MTU Showcase Power at OTC Houston Conference

MTU America Inc. says it is showcasing several MTU engines and complete system solutions at the 2014 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), May 5-8 in Houston. They explain that their products for the oil and gas industry are developed for both onshore and offshore applications, including electric drives for stationary and mobile power generation and mechanical drive engines used in pressure pumping (fracking), well service support and emergency fire water pumps. First is MTU’s new Bi-Fuel Kit, which is displayed on the MTU 12V 4000 S83 engine.

Tognum is to develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines to meet forthcoming exhaust gas emission regulations. Tognum is to develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 Recreational and IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The new Series 2000 M96 engines will be able to cover outputs up to 2,600 bhp (1,940 kW), at the same time complying with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 3 regulations using in-engine technology only. Compliance with IMO Tier III will be possible with SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment.

The Rolls-Royce brand MTU and Fairplay Towage are to test an MTU diesel genset with SCR exhaust aftertreatment in a harbor tug in order to verify compliance with IMO Tier III emission requirements that come into force as of 2016. The nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions will be cut by 90% compared with the IMO Tier I regulation that was introduced in 2000. “This is one of the world’s first tests of high-speed diesel engines equipped with an SCR system designed to meet the NOx levels required by IMO Tier III,” said Dr. Michael Haidinger, Chief Sales Officer of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

GE Diesel Engines and Gearboxes for Reinauer ATB

Reinauer Transportation Companies, LLC, purchased two GE U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 certified marine diesel engines and two Lufkin Marine Propulsion Gearboxes for its new articulated tug and barge (ATB), GE Marine announced. The ATB will be built by Senesco Marine and is scheduled to be commissioned in early 2016 to transport petroleum products in U.S. and International coastal waters. Local engine support will be provided by GE Marine’s Distributor, Cummins MidSouth.
