Alabama Shipyard Wins USNS John Lenthall Repair Work

Alabama Shipyard has been awarded a contract for an 81-calendar day shipyard availability for the mid-term availability of Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) fleet replenishment oiler USNS John Lenthall (T-AO 189).The $10,729,026 firm-fixed-price contract includes a base period and five unexercised options, which if exercised, would increase the cumulative value of this contract to $11,265,523. The Mobile, Ala. shipyard was among six bidders for the project.Work is scheduled to begin September 11…

Boston Ship Repair has been awarded a contract for the the regular overhaul/dry docking of Military Sealift Command’s fleet replenishment oiler USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201).The $14,759,604 firm-fixed-price contract includes a base period and four options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $15,853,866. This contract was a small business set-aside with proposals solicited via the Government Point of Entry website and three offers receivedWork will be performed in Boston, beginning July 14, 2023, and is expected to be completed by Sept.

Port of South Louisiana Buys Avondale Global Gateway

The Port of South Louisiana (Port SL) said it has reached a deal with T. Parker Host to buy the Avondale Global Gateway, a logistics hub at site of the former Avondale Shipyard.The acquisition of this 254-acre facility at mile 108 of the Mississippi River will allow the port to be more competitive in traditional international trade and focus on the new frontier of renewable energy development, Port SL said.The purchase and sale agreement was announced Thursday by Port SL CEO Paul Matthews following unanimous approval from the port commission.

Inmate Dies After Leap from NYC Jail Barge

An inmate has died after jumping overboard from a New York City jail barge, the city Department of Correction announced.Police officers pulled Gregory Acevedo from the after after he reportedly climbed a fence at the Vernon C. Bain Center and jumped into the East River on Tuesday. The man was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead after efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to officials.The Vernon C. Bain Center, also known as the Vernon C. Bain Maritime Facility, is a a 625-foot barge built for $161 million at Avondale Shipyard in Louisiana that opened as a jail in 1992.

East Coast Repair has been awarded a contract for an 85-calendar day shipyard availability for the mid-term availability of the Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) fleet oiler USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195), the U.S. Department of Defense announced. Work will be performed in the company's Portsmouth, Va. shipyard, and will begin January 5, 2022, and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2022.This $8,719,597 firm-fixed-price contract includes a base period and four options which, if exercised would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $9,006,443.

MARAD Awards $220 Mln in Port Infrastructure Grants

More than $220 million in discretionary grant funding has been awarded to improve U.S. port facilities in 16 states and territories through the Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Port Infrastructure Development Program, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Vigor Wins $7.3 Mln Contract for USCG Icebreaker Maintenance

The U.S. Coast Guard’s polar medium icebreaker Healy arrived at Vigor’s Seattle shipyard in early January for maintenance.The $7.3 million contract includes sea valve renewal and overhaul, bow thruster modifications, ballast tank and underwater hull paint preservation and various machinery overhauls.The vessel will be at Vigor’s Harbor Island facility through June 2019.The 20-year-old Healy was built at Louisiana's former Avondale Shipyard and commissioned in 1999. It is one of two icebreakers currently in operation for the U.S. Coast Guard, along with 42-year-old heavy icebreaker Polar Star.

1860 - The sloop-of-war Portsmouth, commanded by John Calhoun, captures the slaver brig Falmouth off Porto Praya. 1908 - The Great White Fleet anchors in San Francisco Bay, Calif. The fleet is delayed from its round-the-world cruise after both Rear Adm. Robley D. Evans and Rear Adm. Charles M. Thomas fall ill. On May 15, Rear Adm. Charles S. Sperry assumed command and completes the cruise ending Feb. 22, 1909. 1916 - The first ship-to-shore radio telephone voice conversation was held on board USS New Hampshire (BB 25) off the Virginia Capes.

Avondale Shipyard for Sale

Local media quote Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII)  as announcing this week the Avondale Shipyard, just upriver from New Orleans, is being sold. The historic, 206-acre facility is on the market after a tumultuous last five years that have included layoffs and threats to close the shipyard. But members of the community hope the new owners will bring business back to the area. Only a skeleton staff remains at the sprawling West Bank facility that once employed more than 5,000 skilled workers. The company that shuttered the shipyard after 76 years may now be looking for a buyer. Jerry Bologna, executive director of the Jefferson Economic Development Commission (JEDCO), said HII is expected to have the property listed for sale in the next 30 to 60 days.

HII, Kinder Morgan Not to Pursue Avondale Joint Venture

Huntington Ingalls Industries and Kinder Morgan Inc. decide not to pursue joint venture on Avondale redevelopment   Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced it has completed discussions with Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI) to explore the redevelopment of HII's Avondale shipyard in Louisiana. Since April 2014, HII and Kinder Morgan have evaluated best-use opportunities for the facility, and have mutually decided not to move forward with a joint venture.   HII said it will continue to assess all alternatives for future use of the facility, to include selling the property, and will continue to work closely with the State of Louisiana and Louisiana Economic Development.

HII Reports Q1 Earnings Jump

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) reported first quarter 2014 revenues of $1.59 billion, up 2 percent compared to the same period last year. First quarter diluted earnings per share was $1.81, compared to diluted earnings per share of $0.87 in the same period of 2013. Adjusted diluted earnings per share for the quarter was $1.53, compared to $1.17 in the comparable period of 2013. Segment operating income for the first quarter was $137 million, compared to $120 million in the same period last year.

Huntington Ingalls to Explore Opportunities for Avondale Redevelopment

Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today it will conduct a study with Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE:KMP) to explore redeveloping Huntington Ingalls Industries' Avondale shipyard in Louisiana. Since the July 2010 announcement to close Avondale, HII has aggressively sought a strategic solution to redevelop the facility. The study will explore and evaluate best-use opportunities for the facility. Once the study is completed and a determination has been made for an economically viable, best use of the facility, HII and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners may pursue the formation of a joint venture to re-purpose the Avondale site. Avondale's location on the Mississippi River offers unparalleled access to major markets by truck, rail and sea, making it attractive for many uses.

The Navy is to commission amphibious transport dock ship 'USS Anchorage' in namesake port city of Anchorage, Alaska, 4, May 2013. Adm. Cecil Haney, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, will deliver the ceremony's keynote address. Annette Conway, wife of retired Gen. James T. Conway, the 34th commandant of the Marine Corps, is serving as the ship's sponsor. "Like the previous USS Anchorage, I am confident LPD 23 and her crew will represent the United States with distinction around the world for many decades to come," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

Huntington Ingalls Industries Reports Strong 2Q Results

Huntington Ingalls Industries Reports Strong Second Quarter Results; Significant Progress on Key Programs. Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) reported second quarter 2012 revenues of $1.72 billion, up 10.1 percent from the same period last year, and segment operating margin of 7.4 percent, up from 6.3 percent in Q2 2011. Total operating margin was 6.2 percent, up 34 basis points from the second quarter of last year, and second quarter diluted earnings per share was $1.00, compared with $0.80 in the same period of 2011, an increase of $0.20. Cash provided by operating activities in the second quarter of 2012 was $151 million, $35 million less than the same period last year.

Nearly 1,800 guests attended the christening today of Huntington Ingalls Industries' ninth amphibious transport dock, Somerset (LPD 25), at the company's Avondale shipyard. LPD 25 is named to honor the courage of the passengers and crew members of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed on Sept. 11, 2001, near Shanksville in Somerset County, Pa. Mrs. Mary Jo Myers, wife of Gen. Richard Myers, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, smashed a ceremonial bottleacross LPD 25's bow at the culmination of the ceremony, officially christening LPD 25 as Somerset.

Shipbuilders Rely On Training To Fill Crafts Jobs

With skilled craftsmen in short supply in U.S. coastal areas, many shipbuilders turn to their own, sometimes extensive, internal training. Because fewer young people are entering shipbuilding out of high school, the industry is faced with an aging workforce that will soon have to be replaced. As good jobs for shipfitters and welders go begging, industry leaders say it's way past time to spread the word about these opportunities. Metal Trades Dept: Navy Won't Incentivize Closing Avondale
