Ocean Charger for Offshore Wind Vessels Proves a Success
The industry consortium behind the Ocean Charger project, led by Vard, has completed the demonstration of the charging solution in a port as well the connection solution offshore, proving the technology designed to supply clean power to offshore wind vessels is ready for the market.By connecting vessels to the power grid in the wind farm and charging batteries regularly, the Ocean Charger solution is securing availability of emission-free vessel operations. The Ocean Charger has proved through the tests that it can power operations at the field without using any additional energy sources…
ABB to Deliver Shore Connection Solution for Portsmouth International Port
ABB has secured an order with Portsmouth International Port to supply a shore connection solution for visiting ferries and cruise ships as part of the UK port’s Sea Change project.Shore connection allows visiting ferries and cruise ships to avoid emissions by connecting to the shoreside electrical grid while in port, supporting the Portsmouth’s port aim to be the first in the UK to be zero emissions by 2030.The initiative is part of the port’s Sea Change project to design, build…
Cavotec Shore Power in First for European Tanker
The Swedish port of Gävle recently became one of the first in the world to successfully connect a tanker vessel to a shoreside electricity system. The shore power connection solution was provided by Cavotec. The system, based on new standards drawn up in co-operation with other ports and operators, is set to pave the way for other tanker berth operators to reduce emissions, says Cavotec. The test sequence, during which no electrical current was supplied to the vessel, was conducted earlier this year with the Tern Fors…
What to Expect from the US Offshore Wind Market This Year
After many false starts, the U.S. offshore wind market is building strong roots for a solid future. But as the market develops from its current northeast and mid-Atlantic niche new opportunities and challenges arise. The U.S. offshore wind market has long been seen as not delivering on its significant potential. With an offshore wind technical potential of more than double that of the country’s total annual electricity sales, the U.S. has long been seen as having the potential to be a major player in the global offshore wind market.
ABB to Fit Tallink's Ferry Megastar with Shore Connection
ABB’s shore connection solution will allow Tallink shuttle vessel Megastar to plug into the local grid for quiet and emission-free overnight layovers in the Port of Tallinn.Fueled by low-emission liquefied natural gas (LNG), passenger and car ferry Megastar makes three return journeys between the Estonian and Finnish capitals per day, with an overnight stay in Tallinn where it needs to keep generators running to ensure energy availability for onboard systems. With ABB’s shore connection solution…
ABB Enables Emission-free Port Visits
French ferry operator Corsica Linea is fitting out its ferries calling Port of Marseille with equipment necessary to use electricity for power at berth using ABB’s shore connection technology.Instead of running diesel-fueled auxiliary engines, Paglia Orba, Jean Nicoli and Pascal Paoli ferrieswill use electricity for power at berth. Each of the three vessels is being modified to feature ABB’s power compensation solution Dynacomp, which allows electricity available from the local grid in Marseille to be stepped down to 11KV in order to take care of ship power needs while in port.“ABB shore connection technology enables the type of emissions-free ship power that regulators, ports and local residents increasingly demand.
Dredger Converted to Dual-fuel
The first European dredger converted to dual-fuel LNG/MGO propulsion has departed Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) to return to work, 23 months after contract signing. The 117m, 8,500 cu. m. trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by the Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire. Damen delivered a turnkey package that included engineering, procurement, installation, commissioning and support. Key features included changing of the engines to dual-fuel (LNG/Diesel) models…
Green Shore Power Connection for 11 Hanjin Ships
L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that 11 Hanjin Shipping container vessels calling at the U.S. West Coast ports of Long Beach and Oakland, Calif., are to be fitted with its SAMCon high-voltage onshore power connection facilities. SANIL Electric Co., Ltd. is the prime contractor to L-3 SAM Electronics, and the end user is Hanjin Shipping. SAMCon will enable the vessels to meet California’s upcoming strict clean air regulations, when berthed at terminals, without generating harmful noise and air pollutants caused by active diesel engines.
