USCG Warns of Water Contamination in Fuel Systems

A towing vessel operating in a pushing-ahead configuration experienced a loss of all propulsion while operating on the Mississippi River. The loss of propulsion occurred approximately three hours after getting underway and about 3.5 hours after receiving fuel from a shore-side facility. Fortunately, there was no significant damage to the vessel, nor injuries to crewmembers because of this casualty.The subsequent investigation into the causal factors revealed that the vessel’s fuel tanks and fuel service system to the engine were heavily contaminated by water.

TechnipFMC wins EPC Contract

TechnipFMC  has been awarded by Zakum Development Company (ZADCO) an Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract (EPC3 project) for a sulfate reduction plant on West Island located offshore Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The objective of the EPC3 project is the installation of a sulfate reduction plant module (SRP) along with new installations and tie-in to existing facilities in West Island. The SRP module incorporates cutting edge water treatment technologies with advanced filtration and nano-filtration systems. These systems are used for water injection into Upper Zakum western areas reservoir tight structure, which requires high quality water with less sulfate content and particle size.

Bulk Handling Facility Commissioned in Townsville Port

Northern Stevedoring Services (NSS) and the Port of Townsville Limited (POTL) have announced the official commissioning of a state-of-the-art bulk handling facility in South Townsville. New Compact Ballast Water Filters Launched

Filtersafe announced the launch of its ‘Compact’ line of ballast water filters, a new range of self-cleaning filtration systems designed for use in vessels with limited space or for retrofit installations. Pentair Opens Aquaculture Center of Excellence

Mindful that fish farming has the potential to help meet an expanding  population's need for protein in a world with increasing water constraints, Pentair announced the opening of its Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems' World Aquaculture Technology Engineering & Research Center of Excellence in Apopka, Florida. The center, which consists of 12,400 square feet of laboratories and fish culture systems, will be used for demonstration, research and teaching activities. CSA, GSI Partner on Ballast Filtration Tests

The members of the Canadian Shipowners Association (CSA) have partnered with Great Ships Initiative (GSI), a project of the Northeast-Midwest Institute, a regional nonprofit research center headquartered in Washington, DC. Efficacy tests of ballast water filtration systems in the unique, cold, fresh waters of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Waterway (GLSLW) will take place this summer at the GSI ballast treatment testing facility in Superior, Wisconsin. To date no technology has been type-approved for operation in the GLSLW waters, where Canadian vessels operate. Canadian shipowners are looking proactively to find practical solutions to ballast water management.

Polymers Avert Pollution Threat

Among the more compelling news photos published following the landfall of Hurricane Sandy was that of the 184' tanker John B. Caddell run aground onto a Staten Island street by tidal flooding. That the tanker required heavy lifting to return it to sea was only part of the problem. A layer of bunker fuel shrouded the vessel's flooded engine room, creating a contaminated work area. C.I.Agent Solutions assisted with remediation so salvage work could move forward. PMFG Win $13.7M Navy Contract
