Jan De Nul Group launched its fourth Ultra-Low Emission vessel last week in Singapore. It concerns the 6,000 m³ Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger Sanderus built at the Keppel Offshore & Marine shipyard.This green vessel is the first of two identical medium-sized hopper dredgers under construction at Keppel O&M’s shipyard in Singapore, fitted with a two-stage filtering technique for exhaust gases.In total, Jan De Nul Group designed six Ultra-Low Emission vessels (ULEvs) for its fleet: five Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers and one Offshore Jack-Up Installation Vessel, the Voltaire.

Training on Ship Fuel Data Collection in China
The International Maritime Organization (IMO)-led GloMEEP project has delivered a training course in China last week to help maritime administrations and classification societies play their part in an ambitious scheme to collect fuel consumption data from ships.The data collected will provide vital information to support IMO’s global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. From 1 January 2019 ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above will have to collect consumption data for each type of fuel oil they use.

High-sulphur Fuel Demand Outlook Jumps as Shippers Soften Stance on Scrubbers

PISR, VERIFAVIA Enter Verification Service Agreement
Verifavia, an environmental verification, certification and auditing body for aviation and maritime transport and will work with Palau International Ship Registry (PISR) to provide IMO Data Collection System (DCS) verification services to Palau-flagged vessels. The DCS reporting process uses the method of reporting of fuel oil consumption. Verifavia will provide PISR vessels with a complete reviewed Data Collection Plan (DCP). They will be built-into the SEEMP Part II by December 31, 2018, allowing PISR to issue a Confirmation of Compliance to its fleet by May 31, 2020.

IMO/MARPOL Amendments Enter Into Force
Requirements for ships to collect data on their fuel oil consumption entered into force on 1 March. Other important amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) have also entered into force, covering the classification of garbage, including the addition of a new category of “e-waste”, and amendments to the International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate. The ship fuel oil consumption data reporting requirements are the latest mandatory requirements aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of international shipping.

Technology Cooperation for Low-Carbon Shipping
The Global MTTC Network (GMN) maritime technology project, run by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and funded by the European Union, was presented during a side-event (10 November) at the UN climate change conference in Bonn, Germany (COP 23). The project established a network of five regional Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs). Representatives of the European Union, IMO, MTCC-Caribbean and MTCC-Pacific participated at the event. MTCCs updated the audience on their pilot projects, including data collection on fuel oil consumption on ships.
