Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order of 12 diesel-electric straddle carriers from Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT) in Italy.Located in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, MCT,  owned and operated by Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), is a mega port able to handle the largest container vessels deployed on Asia-Mediterranean routes.The terminal has handled more than 56 million TEUs since it opened in September 1995. In January 2020, Kalmar delivered the 200th Kalmar straddle carrier to the terminal.

Damen Shipyards Group has delivered a newly built harbor tug to Con.Tug in Italy. The vessel, named Gioia Star, will operate in Gioia Tauro, one of the most important transhipment ports in the Mediterranean.Con.Tug – a joint venture between Scafi and TIL – ordered the new tug from Damen in January. Italian container terminal, intermodal & logistics operator Contship Italia Group has appointed Alfredo Scalisi as the new General Manager of its flagship container terminal at La Spezia. Medcenter Container Terminal SpA (MCT), which operates a major transshipment hub for the Mediterranean region, has placed an order for 32 diesel-electric straddle carriers. The delivery of all machines scheduled to be completed by the end of Q4 2019. MCT is located in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, a mega-port able to handle the largest vessels deployed on the Asia-Mediterranean routes.The terminal has handled more than 50 million TEU since it began operations in September 1995, with an annual handling capacity of 4.2 million TEU. In total, Kalmar has delivered 164 straddle carriers to MCT since the terminal was opened. Contship Italia SpA has sold its 50 percent share in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, which includes the Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT).A press release said: "Contship, a fully controlled subsidiary of Terminal Investment Ltd (TIL) have executed a share purchase agreement concerning the sale of 50% of CSM Italia Gate S.p.A., the company which owns 100% of MCT."MCT is the concessionaire of the container terminal activities in the port of Gioia Tauro and TIL already owned 50% of CSM Italia Gate S.p.A.The parties involved are not disclosing terms. Regulatory approvals are still pending.At closing, TIL will own 100% of CSM Italia Gate S.p.A. and will indirectly control all the shares of MCT.Contship Italia S.p.A.

The Pure Car & Truck Carrier Grande Halifax, owned and operated by the Grimaldi Group, has been christened yesterday in Halifax, New Scotia. Godmother of the new vessel was Ms. Karen Oldfield, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority. A ceremony took place at Halterm/Autoport with the presence of a distinguished delegation composed of representatives of civil and maritime authorities, among which the mayor of Halifax Michael Savage, Members of Parliament, the honorary consul of Italy in Halifax Marilisa Benigno, port operators, shippers, managers of the Grimaldi Group and of its daughter company ACL (Atlantic Container Line).

Contship Italia Group, Italy’s leading maritime container terminal and intermodal operator saw an increase in handled volume of 1.7% and 9.7% increase in transported volumes for 2016. The group’s Maritime Container Terminal business saw an increase of 109,000 TEUs in overall handling volumes in 2016, welcoming 6,888 vessel calls, up 4% year on year. Contship’s intermodal business reported an overall rise in transported volumes and directly operated number of trains. Innovative fast customs corridors, an improved load factor of domestic trains in the second half of the year, plus the increased routing of cargo via the southern gateway to south and central Europe, have all supported an increased market share of 25% in the Italian maritime intermodal business.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) made its first port call in Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) in Batumi, Georgia, marking the launch of Gioia-Ukraine & Georgia feeder service, says International Container Terminal Services, Inc.(ICTSI). “M/V Max Carrier made its first call to Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) in Batumi, Georgia, marking the launch of the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) Gioia -- Ukraine & Georgia feeder service,” ICTSI said in a statement. The new service features fast connections between the Port of Batumi and the ports in Gioia Tauro, Italy; Burgas, Bulgaria; and Ilichevsk and Odessa in Ukraine. BICT is a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of ICTS49, and Batumi Sea Port Ltd. (BSP). The port operator, controlled by billionaire Enrique K.

CMA CGM Group announced the launch of two new weekly services, EPIC 1 and EPIC 2, between the Arab Gulf, Pakistan, North West India and North Europe. The current Epic service will make room for the two new weekly services. EPIC 1 offering a direct connection between North Europe and Pakistan – North West India. • EPIC 2 offering a direct connection beetween North Europe and United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and North West India. The ship operators on both services allow CMA CGM to increase its departure frequency between the Indian subcontinent and North Europe, and enrich its ports coverage. In India with the addition of a weekly call in HAZIRA. In the United Kingdom with three weekly calls ( Southampton and Felixstowe on EPIC 1, London Gateway on EPIC 2).

EUROGATE can look back on a good financial year, 2015. Despite difficult market conditions the European terminal operators Group increased its net profit by 13.4 percent to EUR 73.5 million (prior year EUR 64.9 million). Container handling at the German EUROGATE locations grew faster than the market. In Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Hamburg EUROGATE 2015 hit with 8.2 million standard containers (TEU) 1.5 percent more boxes in order as 2014. The entire North Range ports recorded in the same period dropped by 1.6 percent. The total amount of the turned-up in the European group_container totaled 14.5 million TEU two percent on the previous year and corresponded to the market development: The total throughput of European ports 2015 was also increased by two percent rückläufig1.

APM Terminals’ increased invested capital to USD $6.2 billion in 2015 as ongoing strategic plans to drive portfolio growth, improve productivity and safety performance, generated USD $4.2 billion in revenue, and a profit for the year of USD $654 million. Portfolio throughput weighted by equity share was 36 million TEUs for 2015, and when not including the divestment or exit of operations in Houston, Jacksonville, and Charleston, USA and a share in the Med-Center Terminal in Gioia Tauro, Italy, volume declined 1.1% from the year prior, while the overall global container market grew by 1.3%. Lower oil prices in 2015 affected APM Terminals bottom line, as reduced oil revenue resulted in declines in import cargo into oil producing countries in West Africa, Russia and Brazil.

Continuing support from key markets across Asia helped Contship Italia Group, the leading container terminal and intermodal transport operator in Italy, to report a steady set of results for 2015. Contship Italia Group terminals handled a total of 6.3 million TEUs last year on the back of increased volumes at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), its main gateway for Asian cargo. LSCT, with four weekly calls from China, the Far East, and South East Asia, continues the positive trend that has seen Asia trade via La Spezia increase by 3.5% on the previous year (up 19% over the past five years). In 2015, 197 of 938 total calls at LSCT were associated with Asia services offered by the 2M, O3 and CKYHE alliances handling vessels in the 10,000-14,000 TEU capacity range.

The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A Australia Express Service will begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port, the U.K.’s newest deep-sea terminal, following changes to the service. The service will now provide direct calls between DP World London Gateway Port, King Abdullah port in Saudi Arabia, Colombo in Sri Lanka and ports around the Australian coast. It will reportedly be the fastest direct service between Northern Europe and Australia in the market. The call is a new trade lane into DP World London Gateway Port, further enhancing the suite of services on offer to U.K.

On July 14, Hermes Leader, a car carrier operated by NYK Line, rescued 336 people in the Mediterranean Sea. On July 14, the vessel received an emergency call for help while sailing to port of Gioia Tauro, Italy after transiting the Suez Canal. The vessel immediately set a course for the given position and rescued 336 people in the afternoon. One of the final phases in the dismantling of Syrian chemical arsenal has been completed at the Italian southern port of Gioia Tauro, according to multiple media reports. It took about 12 hours to tranship the 78 containers holding some 560 metric tons of chemicals that had been loaded aboard the Danish cargo ship Ark Futura at the Syrian port of Latakia to USNS Cape Ray. The Cape Ray is specially equipped with two field-deployable hydrolysis systems capable of neutralizing the chemical agents, and is heading for international waters to complete the mission. Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has gained an order to supply ten electric straddle carriers to its long standing customer Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), part of the Contship Italia Group, in Gioia Tauro, Italy. The order was booked into Kalmar's second quarter order intake with deliveries scheduled for November 2014. The latest order sees Kalmar strengthen an already long standing relationship with MCT. Currently handling an annual 3 million TEUs, the transshipment hub continues to grow and is now considered to be the "Mega Hub "in the South Europe region, with both global reach to all major markets and regional connections on a weekly basis with over 60 ports throughout the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Aegean and Black Sea.

As part of our objective to continually improve their services to customers, MSC has included a new mainline call to Hazira from July 2015. MSC Tomoko will be the first vessel to call at Hazira on 2nd July 2015. Seven MSC 9,000 TEU vessels will be deployed on the upgraded service, offering fixed day weekly service to and from Hazira. Port Rotation: Nhava Sheva-Hazira-Mundra-Salalah-Gioia Tauro-Valencia-Rotterdam-Antwerp-Felixstowe-King Abdullah- Salalah-Port Qasim-Nhava Sheva. MSC has been serving Hazira Port with a dedicated feeder since early 2013, when this port opened for operations. Now, with a direct mainline call, MSC reaffirms its commitment to customers in India. Dynamar has published “INTRA-MEDITERRANEAN CONTAINER TRADES”, the latest report in its Container Trades and Markets series. Salient details and interesting findings of the new report are discussed here below. Intra-Mediterranean (2014) Container Trades is all about the 170 services operated by 40 different shipping companies deploying 275 container, Ro/Ro and multipurpose ships with container capacities of 400 to 3,000 TEU that populate the intra and coastal all Mediterranean waters. Through nearly 100 ports in 24 countries, they serve some 700 million people in frequencies of between twice and many times per month, carrying an average of 275,000 full TEU of regional trade and feeder boxes every week.

Maersk Line, the world's largest container shipping line, resumed operations at the Port of Boston’s Conley Container Terminal with the arrival of the Sealand Illinois on Thursday, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced. Maersk, which last operated out of Boston in 2000, is the seventh major global container line currently servicing the city's port. Boston will be the second U.S. port of call after New York on Maersk Line’s TA5 service, part of their East-West Network.
