US Import Cargo Peak Came Later Than Expected -Report

Inbound cargo volume at the United Statesā€™ major container ports should continue to slow in the final weeks of 2023 after reaching its peak later than expected this fall, according to the Global Port Tracker report recently released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.ā€œWe originally thought peak season would come in August but imports kept growing in September and again in October,ā€ NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said.

DEME wins Saudi Arabia Dredging Contract

A consortium of Saudi Archirodon and DEME has been awarded the second phase of transformation work for the Port of NEOM, the primary seaport of entry to northwest Saudi Arabia.Based in Oxagon, Port of NEOM is located along the coast of the Red Sea and is adjacent to the nearby Suez Canal, through which 13% of global trade passes. The port will be a critical enabler to the overall build, operations and economic ambitions of NEOM, facilitating the import of goods and materials during the development phase and as a new global port serving the region.The project will commence in December 2023.

Pyxis Ocean Makes First Docking with Metal Sails

The Pyxis Ocean has made its first docking in Brazil with its new metal sails installed.The bulk carrier docked at the Port of Paranaguá in Brazil on Sunday, September 24. It has metal sails 37.5 meters high and is chartered by Cargill. After loading, it will transport its cargo of 63,000 tons of soybean meal to Poland.The sail technology, BAR Tech WindWings, was developed by BAR Technologies, in partnership with Yara Marine Technologies and Mitsubishi, witn support from the European Union.The Governor of the Brazilian state of Paraná, Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior, visited the vessel last week.

CMA CGM Completes New York Terminals Acquisition

US Consumer Goods Import Forecast Lowered for First Half of 2023

Closely watched U.S. retail trade forecasters on Monday lowered their import target for the first half of 2023 and said they expect incoming ocean container volume to remain soft going into this autumn - when retailers like Walmart (WMT.N) should be well into holiday season preparations.The Global Port Tracker now expects U.S. container imports of 10.4 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) for the first half of the year, a reduction of nearly 4% from its prior forecast.

HMM to Invest $11.5 Billion Over Five Years for Expansion

Australian Maritime College Partners with IAMPE

The Australian Maritime College (AMC), part of the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives (IAMPE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreeing to work together on professional development for the maritime and port industry. Under the MOU, AMC and the IAMPE will acknowledge and endorse each otherā€™s programs related to port and terminal education and training. The IAMPE will look to provide a professional certification as Marine Terminal Operator (MTO) to AMC undergraduate students for successfully completing the maritime undergraduate program. In addition, AMC is reviewing IAMPE programs for the granting of academic credit to graduate students in their new Maritime Business Administration in Maritime Management program.
