Swedish Town Karlshamn Says 'Yes' to Gazprom Port Deal
Officials in Karlshamn in southern Sweden will allow Russia's Gazprom to use the city's port for the construction of its Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline after the government dropped its objections, the municipality said on Tuesday. The government had earlier expressed concerns about Gazprom's plans to use the port, but said on Monday the project did not threaten defense interests. Late last year, the island of Gotland rejected a similar deal to support the construction of the pipeline after the government expressed worries about national security. Both the Baltic Sea harbours at Karlshamn and Slite, Gotland, are situated in strategically sensitive areas, with Karlshamn around 50 kilometres from the large naval base at Karlskrona.
Sweden Drops Objections to Port Striking Nord Stream Deal
Sweden's government has dropped its objections to a plan by Russia's Gazprom to use the port of Karlshamn in southern Sweden as a base for the construction of its Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Swedish public radio reported on Monday. Officials in Karlshamn, on the Baltic sea, will take the formal decision on Tuesday, but are likely to vote yes to an agreement after the government tempered its previous objections to a deal. Late last year, the island of Gotland rejected a similar deal to support the construction of the pipeline after the government expressed worries about national security. Public broadcaster Swedish Radio reported assurances had been given that authorities would be able to keep tabs on activities at the port and that Karlshamn already handles a large number of Russian ships.
Scottish Ferries Contract for Parker Bestobell Marine
Parker Bestobell Marine, part of Parker Hannifin, has won a contract to supply cryogenic globe and check valves for two Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries (Calmac) being built at Ferguson Marine Engineering in Glasgow. The valves will be installed in the liquid natural gas (LNG) fuel gas systems of these vessels, which are the first U.K. built ships that will run on this environmentally friendly fuel. The new ferries will be ‘dual-fuel’ vessels so they can operate on both LNG and marine diesel.

Baltic Sea Pipeline Gas Flow Cut Due to Munitions Discovery
Nord Stream consortium, lead by Russian energy giant Gazprom, said on Wednesday it has stopped gas shipments via the Baltic Sea through one of its two lines as Swedish armed forces dispose of a munitions object found nearby. Total capacity of the two lines is 55 billion cubic metres per year. The consortium said a piece of munitions was found in close proximity to the Nord Stream Line 2 on Nov. "The location of the object is in the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) approximately 120 km away from the island of Gotland," Nord Stream said. It added that it was not clear when the gas supplies via the line would be resumed. It said the Swedish armed forces were on site to "safely and professionally dispose of the munitions object".
Saab Bags $1 bln Order for Swedish Submarines
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded contracts worth Skr8.6bn ($1.03bn) to Saab AB for the construction of two new Type A26 submarines and a mid-life upgrade for two Gotland-class submarines. Work on the two A26s is to be completed by 2024. Type A26 submarines are nearly 207 feet in length, 21 feet in the beam and have an endurance of 45 days or 18 days underwater. They have a test depth of about 658 feet. This new development will see Saab construct, verify, and deliver two new Type A26 submarines for the Swedish Navy for a total order value of SEK7.6bn ($912.84m).
Bestobell Reports Headway in Chinese Market
Bestobell Marine has secured two new contracts with Chinese shipyards. The first contract will see the company supply cryogenic valves to the Guangzhou Shipyard International, China for use in a new ferry’s LNG fuel gas system. The second contract involves Bestobell Marine producing its small cryogenic miniature needle globe valves for the Hudong shipyard in Shanghai, where they will be installed on four 174K Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carriers. A daily game of Cold War cat-and-mouse is ratcheting up tensions in the Baltic and drawing the biggest military presence into the region for over 20 years, Swedish military officials say. Eye-to-eye encounters with Russian combat jets and reports of suspected submarines in Swedish and Finnish waters are fuelling regional concerns about Russian assertiveness in the wake of the Ukraine crisis and reversing years of defence cuts. Western officials say Russia has stepped up probing flights and mock bomb runs near Europe's borders since 2013, forcing jets from NATO nations and non-NATO allies like Sweden to scramble repeatedly. For its part, Moscow says NATO has dramatically increased reconnaissance flights near its borders.

A ferry operator’s experience of ‘the fastest ship in the world’ will feature among the cutting-edge initiatives being aired at Interferry’s 38th annual conference in Malta from October 5-9. The trade association event gives South American operator Buquebus a first opportunity to showcase the commercial and technical benefits of its revolutionary newbuild Francisco. Delivered in August from Australian builder Incat Tasmania, the catamaran is the world’s first high speed dual fuel ro-ro to use LNG as its primary fuel. UK Ship in Trouble Baltic: Escorted to Port
A British merchant vessel, listing in rough seas in the Baltic, was escorted to safety by a Swedish coast guard vessel. The crew of the Scot Isles sent out a distress call Christmas Eve close to the Swedish island of Gotland, reports UPI. A rescue helicopter was sent from Visby and remained on the scene until a Swedish Coast Guard ship arrived. The Scot Isles' captain decided to return to Latvia and turned down an offer to evacuate his vessel, being escorted into Latvian waters by the coast guard, where Latvian coast guard vessels took over.
Baltic Sea Second Offshore Pipeline Completed by Nord Stream
The pipeline’s three sections were successfully welded together underwater and will be joined to Russian and German landfalls in August. The underwater welding operations were remotely controlled from the world’s largest dive support vessel, the 160 metre long Skandi Arctic. Highly specialized divers oversaw the complex operations. Nord Stream has successfully completed the second of the two underwater tie-ins of its second gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea. The 1,224-kilometre offshore pipeline is now complete and will be de-watered and dried before being joined to the onshore landfall sections in Russia and Germany in August. This second line is on schedule to become operational as part of the twin pipeline system in the last quarter of this year.

Interferry Seeks Ro-Ro Recruits to boost IMO Voice
Trade association Interferry is mounting a membership drive with ro-ro operators among key targets in a further move to strengthen its representation at the International Maritime Organization. Interferry, which has had IMO consultative status since 2003, recently became an associate member of the influential International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and has just set up a regulatory committee to direct safety and environmental submissions by its newly expanded delegation. Now the association – formed 35 years ago by passenger sector interests - is aiming for more ro-ro members after becoming increasingly involved in issues that also affect freight-only ferries.
Northrop Grumman Upgrades Swedish Subs
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has won a contract to upgrade the inertial navigation systems (INS) for the Swedish navy’s submarines. Under the contract, awarded by Kockums AB, Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit will supply five MK 39 Mod 3C ring laser gyro systems for installation on two Gotland-class and two Södermanland-class submarines, with one set to be used for spares and training. The MK 39 Mod 3C systems will replace the existing spinning mass gyrocompasses currently fitted on the submarines. CA Clase AB, Sperry Marine’s sales and service representative in Sweden, was instrumental in securing the order. Kockums AB will perform the installations, which will be completed by 2011.
Wärtsilä Issues Statement on Investigation
The state prosecutor of Finland has announced that a pretrial investigation will be started into the so-called broker agreement signed by Wärtsilä in connection with marine engine sales in 1999 and 2000, and into the allegation of bribery related to this agreement. Wärtsilä will itself thoroughly investigate the matter and help the authorities in their work. The individual employed by Wärtsilä and responsible for signing the agreement has been relieved of his duties for the duration of the investigation.
