Valmet to Supply Scrubbers for Mitsubishi-built Ferries

Finland-based Valmet said it has booked an order with Japan's Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Shimonoseki Shipyard to deliver hybrid scrubber systems and water treatment units to two ferries. Each vessel will be equipped with two identical Valmet Marine Scrubber towers for each main engine and a water treatment unit as well as Valmet’s marine automation system. The order value was not disclosed. The vessels will be delivered from Mitsubishi Shimonoseki shipyard to Meimon Taiyo Ferry Co., Ltd.

CSA Protests Malaysia's Scrubber Ban

Members of the Clean Shipping Alliance 2020 expressed disappointment in regard to Malaysia’s recently-announced decision to prohibit the use of open-loop scrubbers in its coastal waters. The Malaysia Shipping Notice states that ships calling to Malaysian Ports are advised to change over to compliant fuel oil or change over to closed-loop/hybrid systems before entering Malaysian waters and ports.“We are disappointed in this announcement,” said CSA 2020 Chairman Capt. Mike Kaczmarek.

Atlantic Offshore Orders Hybrid Package for OSV Pair

Technology group Wärtsilä said it will engineer, supply and install complete battery hybrid packages to two offshore supply vessels (OSV) owned by Norwegian-based operator Atlantic Offshore. The 746 kWh battery hybrid systems will be installed on the Ocean Star and Ocean Art at the Fitjar shipyard in Norway. The project is sceduled to be completed in early 2020.The hybrid propulsion conversions will unlock improved fuel consumption and a reduced environmental impact, said Wärtsilä, who booked the order in June 2019.

Scorpio Tankers Orders Pacific Green Scrubbers

Energy Storage Life Cycle Cost Study

Diesel electric propulsion is a concept that uses an electrical power generation plant to deliver power to the propulsion unit. Case studies show reductions in fuel and maintenance costs with such systems. Those improvements can be further enhanced by the addition of an energy storage system to the vessel.This case study provides a cost benefit analysis of an energy storage system for a vessel owner using a real-world operational profile and case study. World's First: Wartsila Intros Hybrid Retrofit

The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS for a hybrid retrofit installation.The project will take place onboard the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo vessel owned by Hagland Shipping. It will be the first project of its kind ever in short-sea shipping applications. The agreement was signed in December 2018.The installation of a Wärtsilä battery hybrid propulsion solution will significantly enhance the ship’s environmental performance by reducing its emissions, fuel consumption, and noise.

Chinese Shipping Company Opts for Scrubbers

Alfa Laval announced Wednesday that it has received an order from an unnnamed Chinese shipping company to supply its PureSOx scrubber systems for exhaust gas cleaning for 31 vessels in its fleet.The PureSOx systems for 31 existing vessels, which are among the largest vessels in the world, represent orders booked in 2018 and deliveries extending from early 2019 through the end of the year, Alfa Laval said. Each scrubber will handle exhaust gas from one main engine and three auxiliary engines.
