Glosten Designs Hybrid Ferry for Kitsap Transit

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy Glosten said it has completed the design of a new passenger-only hybrid ferry for Kitsap Transit, a public transportation agency based in Bremerton, Wash. The new hybrid electric 150-passenger ferry will be the first in Puget Sound, and is expected to carry more than 350,000 passengers annually. The 70-foot-long aluminum hull catamaran will be constructed at Bellingham-based All American Marine. It will feature two BAE HybriDrive propulsion systems driving fixed pitch propellers.

Fast Ferry Study Enters New Phase

Kitsap Transit will pile sand and gravel on a few beaches in early fall to see how much a passenger-only ferry boat will take away. It’s part of the agency’s attempt to bring back the half-hour commuter run between Bremerton and Seattle. The study, which could begin in late September, is designed to measure the impact of ferry wakes left by a newly designed ferry. It also would determine whether renourishing an affected area is a viable way to repair ongoing beach damage from vessel wakes. For the study, sand and gravel approximating what’s already on each beach will be loaded onto the shores from barges during high tide, then graded at low tide. Most of the property owners affected by the new material already have given their approval for the test, Hayes said.

Ultra-Low Wake Ferry Gets Green Light

All American Marine, Inc. and Teknicraft Design, Ltd. have successfully made a proposal to Kitsap Transit to bring a new passenger ferry to Rich Passage. On Tuesday, April 21st, the commissioners of Kitsap Transit unanimously approved $5.3m for the purchase of a 77 ft ultra-low wake Teknicraft catamaran and on May 18th, All American Marine received the signed notice-to-proceed. The high speed passenger catamaran will carry 118 passengers and operate between Bremerton and Seattle, Washington at speeds of 29 to 38 knots.

Glosten to Design Electric Ferry for Skagit County

Washington’s Skagit County has selected Seattle based naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy Glosten to design a new all-electric vehicle/passenger ferry. The new ferry will replace M/V Guemes, which has provided service between Anacortes and Guemes Island, Wash. since 1979, and is now nearing the end of its economic useful life. With a capacity of 99 passengers and 21 vehicles, the vessel forms a primary mode of transit for residents of and visitors to Guemes Island. “This ferry is a critical transportation link in our community,” said Captain Rachel Rowe, Ferry Operations Division Manager. Skagit County has a vision of replacing the aging Guemes with an all-electric vessel.

USCG Fines Ferry Passenger for Laser Incident

A Washington resident has been fined for interfering with the safe operation of a Washington State Ferry (WSF) passenger vessel by shining a laser at the ferry’s master and chief mate. Mark Raden of Freeland, Wash. was aboard the WSF Kitsap transiting between Mukilteo and Clinton on October 22, 2015 when he pointed the high-powered blue laser at the WSF Tokitae, striking the vessel's master and chief mate in the eyes and endangering the 106 passengers on board. A U.S. Coast Guard Hearing Officer assessed a $9,500 civil penalty on December 27 2016.

$42M in Grants for Ferry Docks & Facilities

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced more than $42m in grants to improve ferry service and build new docks and facilities in 15 states and Puerto Rico. Congress authorized the Federal Highway Administration’s Ferry Boat Program was created to fund ferry boat projects that provide critical access to areas that lack other means of transportation where high passenger demand already exists. Program funds can be used for capital improvements to existing ferry operations which could increase the number of riders, relieve congestion or address environmental or significant operational concerns. Shipyard Commander Honored

Capt. Clarke Orzalli, Commander, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, was recently selected to receive the Bremerton,(Wash.) Area Chamber of Commerce's highest recognition - the Hyas Tyee award. Orzalli's selection was based on his significant leadership position, outstanding community/civic outreach and being an exemplary role model for others. Two WSFs Due Back in Service

Washington State Ferries (WSF) inform in its latest newsletter that the ferries 'Kitsap' and 'Yakima' are expected to return to service next week. Commercial shipyards and Eagle Harbor staff completed work this week on both the Yakima and the Kitsap. Work included refurbishing the 50-year-old drive motor on the Yakima, repainting the Kitsap and renovating the Kitsap’s galley. US Navy Sub Completes Arctic Deployment

Fast-attack submarine USS Seawolf (SSN 21) returned to its homeport of Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton August 21, following a six-month Arctic deployment during which it conducted routine submarine operations, including under-ice transits and under-ice operations. Despite of some of the lowest fuel prices experienced in the last eight years, demand for ferry construction is at a seemingly all time high. The focus on building new ferries kicked off in early 2013 and the sustained interest is the continued result of an unleashing of pent up demand. Fleets have been aging and infrastructure needs to be built up in order to accommodate the future demand for commuter ferry travel once fuel prices return to and surpass their once familiar norms.

USCG Sea Fox Commissioned at Keyport

Northwest region military personnel and guests celebrated the commissioning of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Sea Fox (WPB 87374) at the Naval Base Kitsap, Keyport pier Sept. 18. Rear Adm. Gary Blore, commander, 13th Coast Guard District, presided over the commissioning ceremony. Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Charles Bowen provided the keynote speech accompanied by his wife, Janet, the ship's official sponsor. By tradition, the sponsor is a civilian woman with close ties to the service. She is invited to bestow good luck and divine protection over the ship and all that sail aboard. The sponsor also gives part of her own personality to the ship and becomes a permanent member of the crew.

Safe Boats Compete for USCG Contract

According to a report from the Kitsap Sun, the U.S. Coast Guard has chosen Safe Boats International and three other companies to build sample boats that could lead to a contract award for the winner that could be worth between $17m and $20m. Naval Base Kitsap Opens New Carrier Maintenance Facility

Naval Base (NB) Kitsap, Bremerton, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new CVN maintenance complex, Sept. 14. The old warehouse, where the complex now stands, was transformed and renovated to create the CVN maintenance building as a way to help the Navy efforts to improve the efficiency and quality of work of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) personnel. During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Capt. Reid Tanaka, NB Kitsap commanding officer, welcomed and thanked guests for attending the special event. The CVN maintenance complex will support its staff by providing 61,462 square feet in a three story building with shop areas, project administrative areas and extra outdoor storage.

The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) entered U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations Jan. 6 after completing nearly two months of disaster relief efforts in the Caribbean Sea. Wasp departed Norfolk Aug. 30 to replace USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) in Sasebo, Japan as the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship in region. While still in the initial phase of its transit, the ship diverted to the Caribbean on Sept. 4 to assist the U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominica in the wake of Hurricane Irma and then provided assistance to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria…

Submarine Collides off Washington Coast

The ballistic-missile submarine USS Louisiana and a Navy offshore support vessel collided while conducting routine operations in the Strait of Juan de Fuca off the coast of Washington state on Thursday (August 18, 2016), informs  the United States Navy. The collision occurred at 6:00 p.m. There were no injuries to personnel. Assessments of the damage to both the submarine and the U.S. Navy Offshore Support Vessel are being conducted. The incident is currently under investigation. Both ships returned safely to port under their own power. The U.S.

State Unveils Future for Ferries

Washington State Ferries officials presented their idea of what the future holds for the Kingston ferry terminal. Ridership on the Kingston-Edmonds route is expected to increase by 70 percent in the next 25 years. Although vehicles will play a role in that increase, passenger-only service will likely see an even greater boost, the North Kitsap Herald reported. A third boat will be added to the Kingston-Edmonds route in the summer of 2010 and year-round in 2012. A fourth boat will be added in 2023. Instead of jumbo boats, the new vessels will be Issaquah-Class ferries to meet the service need and create less of a burden on local roads.

Two Tugboats Sank Near Port Gamble

The Coast Guard says two tugboats -- not just one -- sank early Monday near Port Gamble. An estimated 200 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from one vessel before a vent was plugged by divers. The Coast Guard, Kitsap County Sheriff's Office and state Ecology Department are investigating the sinkings. The tugs were tied together near the old Port Gamble mill. The Kitsap County Health District advises against harvesting or eating shellfish from the bay until further notice because of the fuel spill. But the state Department of Health gave the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe the O-K to resume geoduck (GOO'-ee-duck) harvesting. The big clams are found in deeper waters. Source: AP

Washington to Post Rescue Tug at Neah Bay

According to Kitsap Sun, the Washington state Ecology Department has to use an emergency contracting procedure to get a rescue tug to Neah Bay by October first. Foss Maritime Services of Seattle has contracted with the department the past five years but says it won't have one available for the job until November. The state paid six-thousand dollars a day last winter for the rescue tug at the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca (FEW'-kuh). Environmentalists consider the tug essential to avoiding oil spills from ships that lose power. Since 1999, the tug has been sent out to assist ships 29 times, including three times last winter. USS Connecticut Arrives Home to Naval Base Kitsap, Bremerton

USS Connecticut (SSN 22) arrived at Naval Base (NB) Kitsap Bremerton Jan. 29, officially changing its home port from Groton, Conn., after a six-month deployment. Connecticut left Groton July 25 for a six-month deployment around the world conducting real world operations and visiting many ports before arriving to its new home in Bremerton. "We had a successful deployment," said Lt. j.g. James Foster, Connecticut supply officer. "We got to visit lots of interesting places and do missions of national importance. The half-hour ceremony left friends and families waiting in blistery cold weather to give their Sailors a warm welcome to their new homes.
