Cat to Power Ferries for 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro
Caterpillar Marine and Cat Dealer Pon Power announced the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on seven aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1,550 eKW at 60 Hz of rated power.

Group Ocean Orders Two Damen Workboats
Dutch based Damen Shipyards Group said it has signed a contract with Canada’s Group Ocean for the delivery of two new workboats that will provide dredging support services at an oil sands project in northern Canada. The new vessels, both Modular Multi Cats 1205, are made of standard, container-sized units that enable easy transport. The versatile Multi Cat workboat used in many sectors for operations such as towing and anchor-handling, dive support, marine engineering, offshore energy operations and for dredging and dredging support.
Cat Debuts Bundled Repair Solution at Workboat
At the 2014 International Workboat Show, Caterpillar will launch a new product support campaign, unveiling the new Cat C18 Marine Bundled Repair Solution and commercial Extended Service Coverage (ESC) for all available existing Bundled Repair Solutions. The new Cat 18 bundled repair solution, which builds off of the Cat 3406 and Cat 3412 bundled repair solutions launched in 2013 as well as the Cat 3408 bundled repair solutions launched this year, is a customizable, comprehensive solution for customers looking to keep their vessels on the water longer. Customers can choose a top end or major foundational kit and customize it with the related components needed for their engine overhauls.

Caterpillar Launches Cat 3500 Gasket Kits
Caterpillar Marine is pleased to announce the launch of Cat 3500 marine diesel engine gasket kits for engine overhauls. Cat gaskets are a critical part within Cat diesel engines and are specifically engineered with specialized materials to reduce leaks and keep fluid within the engine. Recognizing varied customers’ needs for their particular application, the kits are arranged by serial number to provide customers with a simplified and expedited ordering process. The kits will be available to order from the global Cat dealer network by early 2015.
Caterpillar Acquire Berg Propulsion
Caterpillar Marine has acquired Johan Walter Berg AB, whose core brand, Berg Propulsion, is a leading manufacturer of mechanically and electrically driven propulsion systems and marine controls for ships. As a result of the acquisition completion, all Berg Propulsion products will be rebranded as Caterpillar. The new Cat® Propulsion System for optimized bundles and propulsion packages includes controllable pitch propellers, transverse thrusters, azimuth thrusters, aftermarket parts and remote control systems. All Cat Propulsion System products are ideally suited for the complete and comprehensive line of Cat and MaK™ medium and high speed engines.
Caterpillar Set to Showcase New Pod Propulsion Engine
Caterpillar Marine say they will unveil a significant product milestone at the 2013 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, introducing the Cat® Three60 Pod 650, which is specifically designed for the new Cat C8.7 electronically controlled marine propulsion engine. The new Cat Three60 Pod 650 revolutionizes docking and slow-speed maneuvering for diesel-powered yachts. Available in spring 2015, the pod is specifically designed to be remarkably easy for customers to learn, with easy ‘push, twist and go’ maneuvering.
Caterpillar To Launch New CAT® CG137-8 Generator Set
Caterpillar Oil & Gas will unveil the new Cat CG137-8 natural gas generator set at the Bismarck Civic Center in Bismarck, North Dakota during the 2014 Williston Basin Petroleum Conference now in progress from May 20 – 22nd. The new Cat CG137-8 generator set provides 282 ekW (352 kVA), 60 Hz @ 1800 rpm of rated power, offering customers an additional power node to complement existing Cat power solutions in land production applications. The CG137-8 generator set will now be available to order from the global Cat dealer network.
First Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster Delivered
Engineering specialists at Caterpillar Marine’s new Marine Solutions Center are overseeing delivery of the first Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster system, being delivered this month to an undisclosed shipyard in Singapore and will be commissioned midyear. Caterpillar Marine said the new propulsion setup outperforms diesel mechanical systems in all partial load conditions, and offers improved fuel economy and substantial through-life savings for a variety of offshore support vessels (OSV).
D-Day Ship Turned Ferry Repowered
As part of the June 6, 1944 Normandy landings, the USS LST-510 (landing ship for tanks) delivered 200 GIs, and 70 tanks and jeeps to Omaha Beach. She then anchored offshore to serve as an impromptu hospital ship for the over 150,000 Allied wounded. For three months following the invasion, she ferried injured soldiers back to England and supplies back to the front, evading German U-boats and dive bombers. Kvichak Increases Presence in Cat Patrol Boat Market
Kvichak Marine Industries has furthered its presence in the catamaran and patrol boat markets by combining the two to construct patrol catamarans. The company's newest delivery is an add-on to its 54-ft. (16.4 m) patrol catamaran that was built for California Fish and Game (CAF&G). Named Thresher, the vessel will be joined by a sistership, Marlin, this coming spring. In addition, the company said the Alaska Fish & Wildlife Protection (AF&WP) - that has ordered a new cat for fisheries patrol. This new generation of catamarans is conducive because of their increased stability and usable deck space for patrol operations. Each will also house a variety of deck equipment along with boarding launches.
Caterpillar Marine Systems Doubles Parts Warranty
Caterpillar Marine Power Systems says it has increased the warranty on Cat Brand Parts used in all marine applications from six months to one year. The warranty covers all parts used in Cat marine engines, Cat marine generator sets, Cat branded marine control systems and Cat marine transmissions. The extended coverage applies to all parts sold or utilized in service work on or after June 1, 2012. The suppliers say that there will be no additional cost to customers for this significant extension of warranty protection.
Great Lakes Shipyard Reconstructs Put-In-Bay
Great Lakes Shipyard, a division of The Great Lakes Group, has completed all work required under contract with Miller Boat Line, Put-in-Bay, Ohio, to fabricate and install a new 40-ft mid-body extension in the passenger/vehicle ferry Put-in-Bay. The contract was awarded on August 17, 2009, and all work was completed at Great Lakes Shipyard facilities on the South Bank of the Old River Channel, on Cleveland's Cuyahoga River. What started out as a straight forward mid-body extension project grew into a complete rebuild, including replacement of the main engines with new CAT C18 diesels.
Caterpillar Ships C8.7 Supercharged Engines
Caterpillar Marine has shipped Cat® C8.7 supercharged diesel engines. The electronically-controlled C8.7 is capable of delivering an impressive 650 MHP @ 2300 RPM while meeting EPA Tier 3, IMO 2, EU Stage IIIA and RCD emissions requirements. In addition to internal validation activities, the C8.7 recently completed field testing on three sportfish yachts, ranging from 48 to 55 feet, accumulating over 7500 hours. New Tug Joins Harley Marine Fleet
Harley Marine Services has welcomed its newest vessel, Dr Hank Kaplan, to its Puget Sound fleet on June 22. The vessel has a length of 80', a beam of 36' and a depth of 13'7" and is equipped with two 3516C marine propulsion engines that deliver a combined 5,350 HP. The vessel also features the brand new Cat MTA 524-T azimuth thrusters, which were specially designed for high performance tractor tugboats. Designed by Robert Allen Limited in Vancouver, the tug was built at Diversified Marine in Portland, Ore. and is a sister class vessel to the recently built Michelle Sloan and Lela Franco.

Developed for all engine platforms with electrical specialists Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), the system package utilizes AKA’s XeroPoint Hybrid marine propulsion system and provides fuel savings of up to 25% and even emissions reductions. A recent CARB study found a 73% reduction in PM, 50% reduction in NOx & 26% reduction in CO2. Significant improvements are also seen in performance, control and noise levels. New Caterpillar Rig Pressure Pump Engine
Caterpillar's new 16-cylinder, 78 liter engine will be revealed for the first time at the 2013 CIPPE Show in Beijing. Manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, the new Cat 3516C (HD) engine builds on the established track record of the 3512C (HD) engine, which has logged millions of hours in oilfields around the globe, including in China. The engine will be available in three ratings: 2,461 bkW (3,300 bhp), 2,349 bkW (3150 bhp) and 2,237 bkW (3000 bhp) @ 1900 rpm. The engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 Emissions for North America as well as Tier 1 Emissions for international markets.
Crowley, BSY Complete Repower the Leader
The air is a little cleaner at the Port of Los Angeles these days. Just this month, the new and improved Crowley harbor class tug Leader re-entered the ship assist and escort fleet of vessels following an extensive repowering of the vessel's main engines and generators. The repower project, the first of four Crowley tug engine replacements, will help reduce emissions and lessen overall environmental impact and is part of a larger Port of Los Angeles emissions and air quality initiative requiring vessel operators to upgrade their engines to be Tier II emissions compliant by 2013.
New Test Kit Detects Cat Fines Onboard
A new Cat Fines Test Kit has been launched by asset control and protection technology provider Parker Kittiwake. The onboard test identifies the presence of abrasive silicon and aluminum catalytic fines, which can become embedded into engine components and cause abrasive wear, causing irreversible damage to a vessel’s fuel system if left undetected. When fuel is stored for extended periods of time, cat fines – leftovers from the refinery cracking process – settle out of the fuel and build up as sediment in storage tanks.
New Cat-Powered Tugboat Ordered
A new Caterpillar powered tugboat ordered by the Port and Maritime Services Co. Ltd. in Gdansk, is set to play a key role in the ambitious expansion plans of the port authority. Improving the facilities available to customers using the port of Gdansk, including ship owners visiting the massive Remontowa ship repair yard or trading goods into or out of the country, the new vessel is part of an initiative designed to allow Poland to capitalize on its location as one of the major gateways between Russia and the West. New Cat 3412E Offers More Power
Caterpillar's Engine Products Division offers worldwide availability of a new totally electronic 3412E marine diesel engine with ratings from 530-1,400 bhp for commercial marine application. When compared to previous Cat 3412C engines, the 3412E has more horsepower, improved emissions control and dramatically enhanced midrange performance, with faster acceleration, more available power and torque and improved cruising characteristics. Superior reserve power allows the engine to respond quickly to increased load caused by adverse conditions such as swift currents, loaded nets and hard turns. Test engines rated 624 bhp at 1,800 rpm have shown excellent results in two 70 ft. twin-screw inland waterway tow boats.
