World's First Ammonia-powered Containership Planned
A new containership planned for operations in Europe is set to become the world's first to use pure ammonia as fuel.Yara Clean Ammonia and NorthSea Container Line are establishing a joint venture, NCL Oslofjord, to operate the ammonia-powered ship Yara Eyde on routes between Norway and Germany from 2026.The project has been awarded just over NOK 40 million (US$3.6 million) from Enova, a Norwegian government enterprise promoting clean energy technologies.Ammonia is one of several alternative fuels gaining traction in commercial shipping to help cut emissions.

The world's largest container shipping lessor Seaspan Corporation announced on Monday that it has accepted delivery of a new containership that will immediately begin an 18-year charter with a "major liner customer". Ulstein Designing Non-fossil Fuel Containership
Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Ulstein Design & Solutions AS said it is designing a unique, energy efficient containership that will run 100% emissions free and without the use of fossil fuels. The concept is being developed for Oslo-based EDGE Navigation, a maritime start-up focused on developing commercial ships with non-fossil propulsion. Ulstein did not reveal details on the alternative propulsion system, but said the ship would feature its patented X-BOW hull lines.

Neo-Panamax Container Market Looks Better

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation Reports Higher Revenue
Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation said that the consolidated revenues of Q1 totaled NTD 31.03 billion (USD 1.07 billion), up 2.58% compared with NTD 30.25 billion (USD 1.04 billion) in revenue from previous year. The company’s net loss, after tax, was NTD 1.95 billion (USD 67 million), EPS NTD-0.75. Volumes in 2018 Q1 also increased to 1.22 million TEUs, up 9% year over year. Under an improving container shipping market, Yang Ming has returned to profitability last year. In spite of the typical first quarter slack season, the financial report has shown continued year-on-year growth in volume and revenue which was better than expected, and also demonstrates the progress of Yang Ming’s strategy and global efficiency enhancement.
10,000 TEU Vessel Delivered to Seaspan
Seaspan Corporation said it has accepted delivery of the CMA CGM Cochin, a 10,000 TEU containership that will commence a fixed rate time charter with CMA CGM S.A. for a three year term with an option to extend for an additional three years.The new containership, which was constructed at Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., is the second in a series of four 10,000 TEU vessels under time charter to CMA CGM that are scheduled to deliver in the first half of 2018.
MOL Truth, Japan's 1st 20,000 TEU Containership, Delivered
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that one of world's largest containerships, the MOL Truth, was delivered at the Saijo Shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (President: Yukito Higaki, Headquarters: Imabari-shi, Ehime Prefecture) on October 31. The MOL Truth is the first containership with a capacity of over 20,000 TEU built in Japan, and the fifth in a series of six 20,000 TEU containerships that are operated by MOL. On October 25, it was named the MOL Truth. The new containership is 400m long, with a breadth of 58.5m, and has a loading capacity of 20,182 TEU. It will ply the Asia-Northern Europe trade as part of THE Alliance.
Drewry Warns BCOs to Adapt Their Contract Strategy
International transport and logistics executives using container shipping are facing the biggest shift in their ocean provider base for 20 years and must adapt their procurement and contract strategy, according to ocean freight procurement consultancy Drewry Supply Chain Advisors. In the last five years, beneficial cargo owners have been able to secure large reductions in freight costs by running traditional competitive bids with numerous providers in an over-supplied, fragmented market. “Today’s business environment is starkly different, so we are now pro-actively advising our BCO customers that last year’s contract strategy will simply not work as a blueprint for the forthcoming annual ocean tender,” said Philip Damas, Head of Drewry’s logistics practice.
New Containership Design is Self-steering and Emissions Free
Norwegian fertilizer producer Yara and maritime technology firm Kongsberg Gruppe are teaming up to build what they said would be the world's first fully electric and self-steering containership. "The new zero-emission vessel will be a game-changer for global maritime transport contributing to meet the United Nations sustainability goals," the companies said on Tuesday. Automobile makers and technology companies are already working on the development of self-driving cars and trucks, as well as electric vehicles.
Fresh Hopes in Container Shipping: Alphaliner
The new year brings with it fresh hopes for a recovery in container shipping although the market remains fundamentally imbalanced, says an Alphaliner report. A slew of new records were set in 2016 but most of them marked new lows for a container shipping market that continues to suffer from excess capacity, with the weakness expected to persist for at least one more year. The global containership fleet grew by only 1.5% to reach 20.27 Mteu at the end of 2016, the lowest annual growth rate ever recorded in the industry’s history. Growth was kept low by the a record number of ships scrapped, with a total of 192 containership for 654,900 teu demolished in 2016.

The new containership, which was constructed at Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's ninth 10000 TEU SAVER design containership and first delivery in 2016. This is the 18th 10000 TEU vessel using Seaspan's fuel-efficient SAVER design constructed at Yangzijiang. The MOL Benefactor will commence an eight-year, fixed-rate time charter with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. ("MOL"). The ship is the last of a total of five 10000 TEU SAVER design vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to MOL. With this delivery, Seaspan will have nine vessels chartered to MOL. The delivery of the MOL Benefactor expands the Company's operating fleet to 86 vessels.
