RailPower Technologies Corp. and Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp. announced a supply and licensing agreement, in which RailPower will license its technologies to OTB for marine applications and, via OTB, supply hybrid power systems to tug and barge operating companies, tug and towboat builders and shipyards involved in workboat construction. RailPower Technologies' core business is the design and manufacture of its Green Goat Series hybrid locomotives and its new RP20 road and branchline switchers. News: Bay Shipbuilding Picks ATB Design
Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp.'s new Atlantic III ATB ocean tugboat design was selected by Bay Shipbuilding Corp., a unit of Manitowoc Corp., for construction as the powered portion of a new articulated tug barge (ATB) the yard will build for Penn Maritime, of Stamford, Conn. The 140,000 bbl capacity heated ocean tank barge, will be handled by the latest tug design from Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., a long established firm whose focus is ATB design. The new tug, equipped with the Intercon connection system, measures 123 x 38-ft., and is powered by twin EMD 12-710G main engines, for a total of 6,000 bhp. Ocean Tug & Barge Delivers FacetTug Design
Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp. has completed the engineering of an AT/B conversion for Reinauer Transportation of Staten Island, N.Y., the third such AT/B conversion engineered by the Milford, Mass. firm for Reinauer with a fourth currently underway. The converted AT/B tug Craig Eric Reinauer was recently delivered by Senesco Marine of North Kingstown, R.I., to Reinauer Transportation. Signal Wins $47M Contract for ATB
Signal International has been awarded a $47M contract by Kirby Ocean Transport Company of Houston, Texas, to build an articulated tug/barge (AT/B) unit with an option for an additional unit. The AT/B vessel is comprised of a 20,000 DWT ocean bulk barge with a 6,000 BHP AT/B ocean tug. The barge will measure 480 ft x 90 ft x 36 ft and will be outfitted with Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering’s Articouple connection. The 6,000 HP tugboat will be 125 ft x 42 ft x 22 ft built and classed to ABS Maltese Cross, +A1 Ocean Towing Service standards. The AT/B will transport dry-bulk commodities in United States coastwise trade. Kirby Excercises ATB Option with Signal
Signal International announced the option to build the second articulated tug/barge (AT/B) vessel has been exercised by Kirby Ocean Transport Company of Houston, Texas. Signal’s state-of-the-art continuous flow manufacturing facility in Orange, Texas now has a backlog of nearly $100M. Engineering, planning and material procurement for the first AT/B is on schedule for manufacturing work to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. Simultaneously, fabrication of the second unit is also slated to get underway before year’s end. The AT/B vessels are comprised of a 20,000 DWT ocean bulk barge with a 6,000 BHP AT/B ocean tug. Salvage Tug Completes Frigate Tows
Donjon Marine's 7,200 hp salvage tug Powhatan deliverd the fourth and final ex-U.S. Navy frigate to the Turkish Governement. Donjon Marine had been contracted last year to tow the frigates ? three in Philadelphia and one in Charleston, S.C. - and deliver them to the Turks in the Sea of Marmara. Each frigate (414 x 44 x 24 ft.) was towed by the company's 225 ft. U.S. flag salvage tug, the largest such salvage tug operating under the U.S. flag. The third frigate was towed across the Atlantic Ocean by Donjon's tug Atlantic Salvor, a 6,480 hp ocean tug.
Alabama Shipyard to Build ATB
Alabama Shipyard, Inc., has signed an agreement with Reinauer Transportation Companies to build an articulated tug barge unit (ATB) with an option for up to three additional units. The 460-ft. barge, designed by Alabama Shipyard, is double-hulled in compliance with OPA 90 regulations. Bob Hill of Ocean Tug and Barge Engineering, designed the 7,200 hp, 124-ft. tug. The ATB features the patented Intercon tug/barge coupler system designed and built by Intercontinental Engineering and Manufacturing Corp., of Kansas City. The system consists of two independently mounted gear-driven ram assemblies, which connect the tug and barge. The connection is rigid and mechanically locked, resulting in a vessel that handles like a conventional ship.
New Tug to be Permanently Paired with Self-Unloading Barge
The Interlake Steamship Company and Interlake Transportation have received 7,200 hp Z-drive tug Dorothy Ann. Designed by Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering, the 124.5 ft. long Dorothy Ann was constructed in 1998 by Bay Shipbuilding Company. Final outfitting was performed by Bark River Towing, Weld All and Marine Accommodations. Dorothy Ann is the largest Z-drive tug built to date in North America. Twin Ulstein Z-drives enable the vessel to turn on her own axis, stop within her own length and move easily in any direction. Coupled with self-unloading barge Pathfinder, the pair is the most maneuverable unit on the Great Lakes, says the company. Alone, Dorothy Ann can travel at 16 mph; when pushing the loaded barge, open lake speed is 11.5 mph.
Bender Wins ATB Contract
Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc signed a contract with Maritrans Inc. to build three new articulated tug-barge units, each having a carrying capacity of 335,000 barrels. Each barge will be connected to a 12,000 hp tugboat using the Intercon connection system. Construction of the three new vessels will take place in Mobile, Alabama and at its affiliated company, the Tampa Bay Shipbuilding & Repair Company. Maritrans estimates that the total cost of construction (including owner furnished equipment) will be approximately $77.5 million for each tug-barge unit. Bender Shipbuilding expects to deliver the first unit in October of 2007, with the remaining two vessels expected to be delivered seven months apart in May and December of 2008, respectively.
Navy to Search for El Faro Wreckage
Fleet Ocean Tug USNS Apache (T-ATF 172) departed Norfolk, Virginia, today to begin searching for wreckage from the missing U.S. flagged merchant vessel El Faro. The ship is deploying to a search area northeast of Crooked Island in the Bahamas island chain, which is the last known location of the vessel. The initial search area is 100 square miles, and water depth is estimated to be 15,000 feet across the expected search area. Transit to this search area is expected to take four-to-five days due to weather.
New Costwise ATB Design from Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering
Claiming "an advancement in the art of tug and barge design," Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering (OT&B), Milford, Conn., has introduced a new ATB design "based on the firm's long experience and highly successful specialization in this market," said OT&BE President Robert Hill. The company's Costwise AT/B series are targeted to attain higher unit speeds at sea, better maneuverability and improvements in habitability, constructability and ergonomics. "The Costwise AT/B design will be adaptable to the broader, worldwide market, while still meeting the unique design requirements of the U.S. market," Hill said. The company says it has had a hand either in the design or refit engineering of over one-half of the ATBs operation in the United States.
Linda Moran Delivered
August 15, 2008 was a milestone for Washburn & Doughty as the Linda Moran left the shipyard. Linda Moran is the first vessel delivered by the shipyard since a fire on July 11, 2008 destroyed the company's main construction building. The Linda Moran was tied to the company's barge when the fire broke out. Thankfully, due to light winds and local lobstermen who towed the vessel away from the barge, the Linda Moran survived undamaged. The Linda is a 121 x 36 x 18-ft. ATB Tug Launched for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock
A new ATB tug for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD), M/V Douglas B. Mackie, was launched in Mobile, Ala. The vessel is being built by Eastern Shipbuilding and is scheduled to be delivered this fall. Crowley Marine Services Receives Papu Sur
Crowley Marine Services Paraguay has accepted delivery of Papu Sur, the second of two new Papu-Class river push boats to be deployed in its Mercosur barge feeder service. With a fleet that includes two additional ocean tugs, Papu Viento and Papu Mar, Papu Sur will broaden the feeder service's daily sailings between Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Asuncion and other ports situated along the Parana, Paraguay and Uruguay river system. Four flat-deck ocean and river barges are also part of the new group of Sur vessels. Measuring 112 ft. in length, Papu Sur, along with sister vessel Papu Norte were designed and constructed for Crowley Marine's subsidiary, Vessel Management Services. Both vessels will be owned and operated for the Mercosur trades by Crowley's Paraguay S.R.L.

El Faro’s Voyage Data Recorder Recovered
The voyage data recorder (VDR) from El Faro, a U.S. flagged cargo ship that sank during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015, has been recovered from the ocean floor late Monday evening, the U.S. National Transportation Board (NTSB) said. The recovery of the capsule caps a 10-month-long effort to retrieve the recorder, which was designed to record navigational data and communications between crewmembers on the ship’s bridge. Investigators hope the recorder will reveal information about the final hours of El Faro’s voyage and the circumstances leading up to the sinking.
Alabama Shipyard Signs Tug/Barge Contract
Alabama Shipyard has signed a contract to build an articulated tug and barge (ATB) vessel for Allied Transportation Company of Norfolk, Va. "This is our third major contract award during the last four months of 2000," noted Alabama Shipyard president Dick Wells. "We have several pending contracts that will help us create a stable workforce here in Mobile," Wells stated. Alabama Shipyard designed the 129,000-bbl, 450-ft. barge in compliance with the OPA 90, which requires vessels to have a double-hull in order to provide greater safeguards to the marine environment. OPA 90 requires most large coastal barges operating in the petroleum and chemical trade to have double hulls by 2005.
