PBES Powers Norway’s New Battery Electric Ferries
PBES said it has installedctwo 1MWh battery systems aboard the new electric ferries that service the E39 highway route on the 2 kilometer crossing between the Anda and Lote docks. The . Norway’s latest battery-operated ferries, the zero-emissions M/F Gloppefjord and Eidsfjord, are part of the ongoing push for zero and low emission public transportation in Norway. Each 106 meter vessel can carry 120 automobiles and 349 passengers on the eight minute crossing. In 2017 PBES installed more than 15MWh of energy storage to marine markets around the world.
Battery Hybrid Patrol Boat under Development
PBES and NORIS Automation GmbH have partnered on the hybrid drive systems for Europe’s first battery hybrid patrol vessel. The 45m long vessel is being built at Baltic Workboats Shipyard in Estonia and will be delivered with 273kWh of PBES Power 65 battery modules. “PBES batteries provide hours of low speed propulsion with reduced sound and heat signature as well as greatly increased efficiency,” said Brent Perry, PBES Chief Executive Officer. “The vessel is first of many that we will be seeing in law enforcement.
Interferry: Diverse Operations Common Successes
In October the world’s ferry operators gathered in Split Croatia for the Forty Second Annual Interferry Conference. The 470 or so delegates represented 210 operators and support companies from 27 countries. A trade show included firms from around the world including shipbuilders, naval architects, equipment suppliers, training and others of the diverse group that make up the ferry industry. In a panel on Mediterranean Ferries, Philippe Holthof, of the Belgian-based Shipax explained the huge size and complexity of the fleet.

PBES Unveils Enhanced Marine Battery Systems
Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) has announced a revolutionary new solution for enhancing the lifecycle benefits of marine battery systems. ‘CellSwap’ uses a new cost-effective method of retrofitting battery systems by replacing battery cells while leaving the rest of the installation intact. The process, called ‘re-coring’, saves up to 60 per cent of the costs of installing a new battery after a five year cycle, greatly enhancing lifecycle value. CellSwap is a marine industry first that takes a ‘serviceable’ approach to battery components. While conventional batteries have to be recycled in their entirety, CellSwap enables battery cells to be replaced while almost all other components are preserved, including electric and cooling components, cell barriers and master battery unit (MBU).
