Moore Stephens: Optimism to Outweigh Shipping Pessimism in 2018
International accountant and shipping adviser Moore Stephens expects optimism to triumph over pessimism in the shipping industry during the next 12 months. Writing in the latest issue of Bottom Line, the newsletter of the Moore Stephens shipping industry group, partner Richard Greiner says, “According to a recent study, pessimists live longer than optimists, and shipping is short of neither. But the industry has always valued longevity as well as new blood, and it certainly ended 2017 in more optimistic mood than it closed the previous year.
Rolls-Royce Selected to Power New Navy Destroyer
Rolls-Royce will supply the U.S. Navy’s surface combatant ship with the world’s most powerful marine gas turbine. Four MT30 gas turbine generator sets will be supplied for two DDG-1000 Zumwalt Class destroyers, with deliveries of the 36MW MT30 sets to begin in 2009. An MT30 generator set currently provides power to the U.S. Navy’s DDG-1000 Land Based Test Site in Philadelphia and the MT30 has also been selected to power the first two Lockheed Martin Littoral Combat Ships. The MT30 is a proven member of the Rolls-Royce Trent aero engine family, which has accumulated over 20 million operating hours powering passenger aircraft in service with more than 60 airlines and operators.
Yanmar Rolls Out New Marine Power Offerings
Yanmar has already introduced several new products for the marine market in 2018, including a new common rail inboard marine diesel engine touted as the world's smallest, higher horsepower offerings in its mid range series, and expanded joystick controls. Yanmar Marine International has launched the latest addition to its family of new generation common rail (CR) diesel engines, the compact Yanmar 3JH40 inboard engine, at boot Düsseldorf. The three-cylinder 3JH40 has been developed as the marine industry’s smallest CR inboard diesel engine, Yanmar said.
Certification for Siemens SWT 6.0-154 Wind Turbine Prototype
GL Renewables Certification has provided Siemens Wind Power prototype certification for its new six MW offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power's new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine began in Østerild, Denmark, on October 6, 2012. GL Certify Siemens' Prototype Offshore Wind Turbine
GL Renewables Certification rendered to Siemens for its new 6-megawatt offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power’s new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine was carried out in Østerild, Denmark earlier this month. Siemens Wind Power developed its new 6-megawatt wind turbine for use at sea. The direct-drive wind turbine is equipped with what are currently the world's longest rotor blades – each blade measures 75 meters in length. With a record rotor diameter of 154 meters, each SWT-6.0-154 turbine can produce 25 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity in offshore locations, enough to supply 6,000 households.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., has re-delivered the 254-ft. supply boat, Elsa Leigh, to Aries Marine Corp., Lafayette, La. While it looks like a new vessel, Elsa Leigh is the new name for the former Seacor Clipper after an extensive renovation at Bollinger’s Morgan City shipyard. The new name is in honor of Elsa Leigh, the four year-old daughter of Courtney B. Her two main EMD engines were removed and rebuilt by NREC in Houma, La., who boosted their power from 1,250 hp each to 1,500 hp each.

Wärtsilä to Power New Tallink Cruise Ferry
Wärtsilä Corporation was awarded a repeat order in February 2006 for main and auxiliary engines for the fourth new cruise ferry for the Estonian ferry company Tallink Grupp AS. The ferry will be built at the Helsinki shipyard of Aker Finnyards ASA in Finland with delivery in summer 2008. The Wärtsilä engines give the newbuilding a compact, low weight machinery plant with excellent fuel consumption. For this new cruise ferry, Wärtsilä will deliver the complete outfit of main and auxiliary engines: namely four 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines with a combined power of 24,000 kW, two Wärtsilä twin input/single output reduction gears, and three six-cylinder Wärtsilä Vasa 32 auxiliary engines totalling 7380 kW.
Wärtsilä Powers New Bay-class Landing Ships
Wärtsilä Corporation has received the contract to supply the diesel generating sets for two new Bay-class Alternative Landing Ships Logistic (ALSL) building for the UK RFA. The four main diesel-generating sets in each ship will be powered by Wärtsilä 26 diesel engines: each ship having two Wärtsilä 8L26 and two Wärtsilä 12V26 engines. Wärtsilä will also deliver an emergency diesel generating set to each ship. Additional ship sets for a further two vessels to be built at BAE Systems Govan yard will also be supplied subject to pending optional contract. The first two ships, newbuilding numbers 141 and 142, are to be built at Swan Hunter (Tyneside) Ltd in the UK. The twin-screw vessels will have diesel-electric propulsion.
Dive Support Vessel Delivered to Stapem Offshore
The first of two new 18-meter catamaran dive support vessels built for Paris-based Stapem Offshore has been delivered by South African shipbuilder Legacy Marine Group. The Marshal Island-flagged vessel, Stapem Beluga, will operate in the coastal waters of Angola in support of oil and gas exploration and production. The vessel, designed by Incat Crowther, has been customized to suit Stapem’s specific operational requirements. The aft exterior deck utilizes available space by combining deck lockers and racks for diving equipment storage with a covered dive prepping area.
Wärtsilä Developing Hybrid Tug for Brazil
Wärtsilä said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new environmentally friendly tug design for a new port facility being built in the Brazilian city of São Mateus. Wärtsilä to Power New DE Tanker
Wärtsilä Corporation received a contract to supply main diesel generating sets for a 19,500 dwt product/chemical tanker being built at Shanghai Edward Shipbuilding in the People's Republic of China. Delivery of the ship is scheduled in August 2005. Ordered by Sweden’s Rederi AB Donsötank, the newbuilding is a double-acting tanker (DAT) which is optimized for efficient ice-breaking when going astern and for efficient sailing in open water when going ahead. Propulsion is by a single electrically-driven azimuthing propeller drive.
GE to Power New Tug for Multraship
Dutch towage and salvage group Multraship and GE Marine announced that GE's 12-cylinder 7FDM diesel engines have been selected to power a new tugboat being built for Multraship. shp. 2005. Weeks Marine Takes Delivery of Hopper Dredge Magdalen
Weeks Marine’s new self-propelled hopper dredge, Magdalen, was delivered by Eastern Shipbuilding on December 22 following sea trials and regulatory inspections. The newbuild is one of the two newest, and among the largest hopper dredges in the U.S., and will bring formidable pumping power to offload beach quality sand or other materials for land reclamation. On December 28, the new dredger sailed from Eastern's Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. on her maiden voyage to the East Coast.

Rolls-Royce Shares Jump as Commercial Marine Unit Sale Mulled
Britain's Rolls-Royce said on Wednesday it was considering the sale of its commercial marine business, which has been hit by weak demand in offshore oil and gas markets, as part of a restructuring of the company into three core units. Shares in the company jumped after it said the loss-making unit could be sold. They were trading up 7.2 percent at 1330 GMT. The announcement came as part of a restructuring of the aero-engine maker into civil aerospace, defence and power systems units, with naval marine and nuclear submarines consolidated into defence and civil nuclear into power systems.

The Shipowners' Club has revelead details about Mayflower Autonomous Ship project (MAS), which is an innovative new venture to design, build and sail the world’s first fully autonomous vessel across the Atlantic Ocean. The project’s name commemorates the anniversary of the Pilgrim Father’s voyage from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth in the New World (USA) on the original Mayflower in 1620. It’s Electric: Charging Asia’s First E-ferry
Innovative charging technologies connect Asia’s first e-ferry to electrical power, eliminating emissions and dramatically reducing operating costs. The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and that entered service last year, is fully electrically powered. This follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. The charging solution was supplied by Swiss based engineering firm Cavotec, who said the technology ensures safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth.

Rolls-Royce Mulls Sale of Commercial Marine Unit
Industrial conglomerate Rolls-Royce is considering selling the bulk of its struggling marine business as the company embarks on another restructuring which aims to further slash costs. "We are embarking on a further simplification of the business, including the evaluation of strategic options for our Commercial Marine operation and a reduction from five operating businesses to three core units based around Civil Aerospace, Defence and Power Systems," said a press release from the company.
