Crowley Maritime Corp.’s new container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) ship El Coquí delivered its first cargo from Jacksonville, Fla., to the company’s Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan yesterday – a milestone in the company’s transformation of its U.S. mainland-Puerto Rico logistics services.“Increasing supply chain velocity while reducing customers’ landed costs was the core reason for our $550 million investment in this important service,” said Tom Crowley, company chairman and CEO.

Naval Group Supports Malaysian Navy E-learning

From April 16-19, 2018, Naval Group will participate to the sixteenth edition of DSA, the Defence Service Asia exhibition. On this occasion, Naval Group will sign a contract with DCI to assist the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) to implement a comprehensive E-learning system in order to train its naval forces all over the country.Naval Group and DCI put together their complementary expertise to provide e-learning solutions to the Royal Malaysian Navy. VT Halter Marine has launched the second of Crowley Maritime Corp.’s new Commitment Class ships, Taíno, one of the world’s first combination container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Taíno will now proceed through the final topside construction and testing phase at the shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., before beginning service in the U.S. Jones Act trade in 2018. She will join sister ship, El Coquí, which was launched earlier this year and is now in final testing prior to entering service in early 2018.

Helm CONNECT Secures ClassNK Type Approval

Canadian maritime software company, Helm Operations, a ClassNK subsidiary, sai dit has earned Class Type Approval for its planned maintenance software, Helm CONNECT. On September 1, 2017 after a detailed review process, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), issued a Type Approval Certificate for Helm CONNNECT as a recognized planned maintenance software system. ClassNK is a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). IACS members recognize and accept Type Approvals from other society members, thereby allowing any ship owner to implement the Helm CONNECT software as their planned maintenance tracking system. “This is a historic moment for our organization. GE Powers Maersk’s Mega Ships

GE’s Marine Solutions recently delivered its power take off/power take in (PTO/PTI) solution along with its Power Management System digital software solution onboard four of the largest container vessels owned by Maersk Line—Madrid Maersk, Munich Maersk, Moscow Maersk and Milan Maersk. Madrid Maersk is the first container vessel delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)—back in April—and Munich Maersk and Moscow Maersk have both completed successful sea trials. Milan Maersk will soon be in service.

Balancing Efficiency & Security as Maritime Goes Digital

Hand in hand with the digital craze in maritime is the caution of cyber attacks. We live and operate in a complex society. That society would be impossible without modern computers and other information technologies Those technologies have largely been developed piecemeal to address particular issues, and for the most part they have generally achieved their particular goals. Maximum efficiency is gained when multiple technologies are joined to coordinate their work. Computers get smaller and faster, with ever-growing memory. Joining computers together allowed for creation of the internet.

K-Fleet Voyage Application Verified for EU MRV

K-Fleet Voyage, KONGSBERG’s digital application for monitoring ship fuel consumption and emissions, has been verified by Ecoxy AS for use under the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) and the new EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU-MRV) for maritime transport regulation (2015/757). Ecoxy AS is accredited by Norwegian Accreditation as a verifier according to ISO14065 for the ETS and EU-MRV. The regulation, for ships exceeding 5000 GT and which call at any EU port regardless of flag or country of ownership, aims to quantify and reduce CO2 emissions from the shipping industry.

ABB Propulsion, Automation and Software for Five Cruise Ships

ABB will supply the complete power, propulsion and automation package for a series of new cruise vessels being built by MV WERFTEN for Genting Hong Kong brands Crystal Cruises and Star Cruises. The three Crystal Cruises’ luxury “Endeavor Class” mega-yachts will feature a Polar Class 6 and enable cruising in the Arctic; then follow the route of migrating whales along the coast of the Americas and Europe to Antarctica during winter. The Star Cruises “Global Class” vessels will be two of the largest on the market with 204,000 tons registered tonnage each.

Georgia Ports See Double-digit Growth in December

The Georgia Ports Authority marked 12.3 percent container volume growth in December, moving 292,172 twenty-foot equivalent container units, an increase of 32,099 TEUs compared to December 2015, a record for the GPA. Roll-on/Roll-off cargo mirrored that growth, with a 12.3 percent increase (7,000 units) in passenger vehicles and heavy equipment handled at Colonel's Island terminal in Brunswick and Ocean Terminal in Savannah. Georgia's deepwater ports moved 63,967 Ro/Ro units last month.

Crowley Maritime Corp.’s newest combination container/Roll on-Roll off (ConRo) ship has been launched at the VT Halter Marine shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. for the Crowley’s service between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Named El Coquí after a beloved frog native to Puerto Rico, the ConRo is one of the world’s first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship will now proceed through the final topside construction and testing phase before beginning service in the U.S. Jones Act trade during the second half of 2017.

Marshall Islands Extends Electronic Logbook Approval

The Maritime Administrator of the Marshall Islands has extended its approval of the K-Fleet Logbook system, enabling more than 4,000 flag state registered vessels to introduce digital reporting for oil record and garbage record logbooks. The approval states that K-Fleet Logbook may now be used to fulfill the requirements of the Marshall Islands Maritime Regulations (Marine Notice No. 7-041-5) to maintain a deck and navigation log, an engine room log, an oil record book, cargo record book, a garbage record book and a radio log.

Force Technology, Logimatic Collaborate on Software

The new collaboration between software supplier Logimatic and research and development company FORCE Technology has resulted in a multifunctional software system capable of providing big results for mariners. Last year Logimatic launched ’Sertica Performance’ as a part of the software system ‘Sertica Fleet Management’. ‘Sertica Performance’ monitors and analyzes the elements affecting a vessel’s fuel consumption. The collaboration with FORCE Technology consists of an integration between the performance optimization system ’SeaTrend’ and ‘Sertica Performance’.

The Korean heavy lift company TPI Megaline has selected ABB’s predictive OCTOPUS marine software to ensure safe and efficient operations on one of its vessels.
