These uses include leisure travel and tours and mass transportation of passengers and vehicles. In recent years, the U.S. military has joined the ranks of high-speed vessel users by introducing U.S.-built aluminum twin-hull high-speed vessels for use as Theater Support Vessels (TSVs) and for training exercises. Despite a somewhat uncertain funding climate for these types of vessels in the military, they have performed exceptionally well with demonstrated benefits. The U.S.
Austal Submits Final Phase II JHSV
Austal submitted its final Phase II Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) submission to the US Navy this week following a design and review process. Austal was one of three bidders awarded a Phase I contract in January and it is anticipated that a single Phase II contract will be awarded in late 2008 for the construction of up to ten ships. The Austal JHSV Team’s low risk, technology solution is comprised of Austal , Austal Ships () and General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems (GDAIS).

Bollinger Team Awarded Design Contract for JHSV
Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. has won a multi-million dollar Phase I design contract for the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) program. The JHSV program is a cooperative effort of Navy, Army, Marines and Special Operations Command forces. The vessel will be a high-speed, shallow draft platform intended for rapid intra-theater transport of medium sized cargo payloads. The Bollinger contract is one of three awarded by the Navy for a six month design effort in support of a potential Phase II Detail Design and Construction contract.
USNS Fall River Delivered by Austal USA
The Navy informs it has accepted delivery of Joint High Speed Vessel, the future 'USNS Fall River' from the Austal USA shipbuilder. The delivery marks a major milestone, the official transfer of the vessel from the shipbuilder to the Navy. USNS Fall River is the U.S. Navy's fourth Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). "Today the Navy received a tremendous asset," said Strategic and Theater Sealift Program Manager Capt. Henry Stevens. Joint High Speed Vessels are versatile, non-combatant transport ships built from a commercial design with limited modifications for military use.

Next Navy Ship Names Chosen
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has announced the names of the next 3 joint high speed vessels, & 2 littoral combat ships. The next three joint high speed vessels (JHSV) will be named USNS Yuma, USNS Bismarck and USNS Burlington, and two littoral combat ships (LCS) will be named USS Billings and USS Tulsa. Rella Out as CEO at Austal USA
Joe Rella, president and chief operating officer of Austal USA since 2007, has reportedly resigned from the company. Austal's board of directors has accepted his resignation. Brian Leathers, who had been serving as chief financial officer, will serve as interim president of Austal USA. Craig Perciavalle will serve as vice president of shipyard operations."This transition is a natural step," said Austal chief executive officer Andrew Bellamy. Austal has an active contract with the U.S. Navy to build nine Spearhead-class Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) under a 10-ship, $1.6 billion contract. Beyond this, the company also has a contract to build up to 10 Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). Austal is conducting a search for new leadership, according to the company.
Fourth Joint High Speed Vessel Named
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus joined Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to announce that the name of the Department of the Navy's fourth Joint High Speed Vessel will be USNS Fall River (JHSV 4), during a brief ceremony at Heritage State Park on the Fall River waterfront. "The Fall River represents the physical embodiment of the City of Fall River's patriotic spirit," said Mabus, "and the dedication of the thousands of young men and women from this city who have worn and continue to wear the uniform of our country all over the world." USNS Fall River will be the second ship to hold the name of the city. The first, USS Fall River, was a Baltimore-class heavy cruise ship commissioned in 1945 and used largely on training missions.

Ghana and US Maritime Forces Collaborate
The Ghana Armed Forces and the United States Maritime Forces have completed a joint maritime operation, the Africa Maritime Law Enforcement Partnership (AMLEP), as part of the Africa Partnerships Program (APS). The operation brought together representatives from Ghana’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Navy, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coastguard on Spearhead, the U.S. Navy’s first Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV).
Austal in Sembawang Shipyard Strategic Alliance
Austal, & Singapore's Sembawang Shipyard enter strategic partnership to provide ship repair, maintenance, for US Navy ships. Austal and Sembawang Shipyard believe the partnership provides an important resource to the US Navy and other defence forces operating in Asia-Pacific. Austal and Sembawang Shipyard will together provide rapid, high quality support specifically tailored to the US Navy’s fleet of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV), both of which are expected to operate in the region. The first LCS is expected to deploy to Singapore in early 2013. Austal is currently contracted to build ten 103-metre JHSVs under a US$1.6 billion contract and six 127-metre LCSs, four of which are a part of a 10-ship, US$3.5 billion contract.

Navy Joint Hi-speed Vessel Keel Laying at Austal Shipyard
Ms. Virginia A. Kamsky, was chosen to sponsor the ship by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, and was present at the keel laying ceremony for the fifth Joint High Speed Vessel 'Trenton' (JHSV 5), one of ten Austal-designed 103-meter U.S. Navy Joint High Speed Vessels under contract with the U.S. Navy. A traditional keel-laying ceremony marks the first significant milestone in the construction of the ship. Due to Austal’s modular approach to ship manufacturing, all 43 of the modules used to form this 103-meter aluminum catamaran design are already being assembled.
Swift on Display in Washington
HSV 2 Swift the US Navy’s high speed vessel built by Incat in Tasmania,Australia, and leased to the Navy by Bollinger Incat USA, went on display in Washington DC area recently. Traversing the Potomac River on her way to the berth at Old Town Alexandria in Virginia, the high speed vessel passed under the open Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The future of naval combat was on display in the Washington D.C. area, when the U.S. Navy's contracted high-speed vessel (HSV) Swift, pulled pierside in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, March 30-April 3.
Austal Signs Alliance With DSTO
Austal and Defense Science and Technology Organization (DSTO) today signed a five-year Industry Alliance that will strengthen Australia's maritime defenses. The purpose of this Alliance is to formalize and strengthen links between DSTO's maritime research and development activities and Austal's expertise in high speed vessel design, construction and systems integration. Through this alliance DSTO will gain a greater understanding of the long term performance and cost of ownership of high speed aluminum vessels, which will also assist it to provide whole-of-life support for the Australian Navy's Armidale Class patrol boats, and strengthen our maritime defenses.
Minoan Studies Adriatic Market Expansion
Minoan Flying Dolphins (MDF), a subsidiary of ferry operator Minoan Lines, is looking into deploying high-speed ships in the Adriatic market. MDF took out an option for two additional newbuildings with Austal shipyards in Australia, deliverable in 2001. The company already has three high speed vessels on order with Austal.
The U.S. Navy's X-Craft, Sea Fighter (FSF-1), underway outside the Port Of Everett. Sea Fighter will be used to evaluate the hydrodynamic performance, structural behavior, mission flexibility, and propulsion system of high-speed vessels. The X-Craft is a high-speed aluminum catamaran that will test a variety of technologies, which will allow the Navy to operate more effectively in littoral or near-shore waters. Seaward Provides Bridge Officers for LCS and JHSV Sea Trials
Seaward Services provides bridge officers, including the master and chief engineer, for Builder and Acceptance Trials of the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). USNS Choctaw County, the Navy's second Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV 2), satisfactorily completed Acceptance Trials, May 3 in Mobile, Ala. under the command of Seaward Services’ master, supported by the company’s chief engineer and other deck and engine officers. During Acceptance Trials the ship's major systems and equipment were tested and evaluated, including a full power run and demonstrations of main propulsion engineering and ship control systems, anchoring, emergency and crew support systems. The ship reached speeds of over 40 knots during at-sea trials.
Honduras Takes Delivery of Incat Fast Ferry
Honduras-based operator Safeway Maritime Transportation Co., has taken delivery of its first Incat Crowther catamaran ferry for operation on the north coast of Honduras. It will run between the main land city of La Ceiba and Isla de Roatán in the Caribbean Sea. The vessel is a 150.9 ft. (46m) high speed catamaran ferry capable of carrying 460 passengers at a speed of 36 knots. The main cabin accomodates 237 passengers seated in rows. The mid deck first class cabin has seating for 60 passengers primarily seated in rows. This cabin also has its own kiosk and toilet facilities. In addition there is a small VIP cabin for 8 passengers with access from the wheelhouse. An outdoor seating area for 150 passengers is fitted aft of the mid deck cabin and protected from the elements by enclosed sides.
First-In-Class Joint High Speed Vessel Completes Trials
First-in-class Joint High Speed Vessel USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1), the high-speed catamaran transport ship under construction at Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama, successfully completed Acceptance Trials (AT) on August 17, 2012, in the Gulf of Mexico. Navy Re-Charters WestPac Express
The Austal-built WestPac Express has been re-chartered by the U.S. Navy for a further period of up to 55 months (commencing on the expiry of thecurrent charter in February 2007) in which it will continue to support the operations of the US Marine Corps’ Third Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) in the Western Pacific theatre. Originally described as a Theatre Support Vessel (TSV), WestPac Express is now more commonly referred to as a High Speed Connector (HSC), and was first chartered to the III MEF in July 2001 for a proof of concept period. This was the first time the US military had contracted a commercial vessel of this type for military support.
Austal Unveils HSV-M
Austal Ships has released details of one of its advanced military platforms to the global defence industry. Developed in response to existing naval requirements and incorporating advanced hull and propulsion technology, the Austal High Speed Vessel – Multipurpose (HSV–M) is just one example of the potential effectiveness of high-speed vessels for future naval and other military roles. The surge in military interest in large high speed craft is evidenced by United States defence organizations contracting four such vessels in the last 20 months, and a number of major projects in the pipeline. This includes the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) project, which may eventually require 60 ships, and the US Army’s upcoming Theater Support Vessel program.
