Dutch Invention Prevents Towline Failure on Tugboats

The Rotterdam based shipping company Rotortug and ASD Ship Design from Alblasserdam have invented a revolutionary tugboat technology (‘tugnology’) to prevent towline failures from chafing against a tugboats fixed towing point. Conventional towing point designs are usually fixed bitts fitted with polished and stainless steel cladding in line contact areas guiding a towline to a towing winch. Using state of the art towing winches, towlines are winched in and out automatically by using a pre‐set line force to prevent both dynamic overloads and slack wires.

The innovative KO-LINK towing ring, developed by international maritime service provider KOTUG International BV, is now available exclusively from leading maritime ropes supplier, Lankhorst Ropes, under a worldwide marketing agreement. The KO-LINK ring significantly increases synthetic towing line service life by preventing the HMPE pennant from cutting through the line. Updated ShipArrestor System Delivered to NCA

An improved and upgraded version of the Miko Marine ShipArrestor system has been delivered to the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA). The system has been developed to give nations the ability to protect their coastlines from the danger of ships that have lost engine power and from the pollution that can result when they run aground. The ShipArrestor system uses a specially designed parachute-shaped sea anchor that is connected to a drifting ship by helicopter and secured without any need for crew involvement.

Salvage Attempt Postponed

A second salvage attempt of the Pasha Bulker has been postponed with three towlines now broken. The Pasha Bulker remains firmly embedded in the sand at Nobby's Beach and has been causing salvage crews a lot of grief. Three towlines have snapped, two from tugboats, another from the sea anchor vessel. The ship has been buoyant enough to have rotated slightly and the remaining lines will stay attached to keep it in positon. Salvage experts say delays like this are not uncommon, with some refloats taking several months. Source: Australian

JK Fabrication’s Emergency Towing Reel

You’ve got an emergency towing wire. Of course you do. It’s rusted beyond belief, probably retired from primary service two years ago when it developed that kink and those nasty fishhooks. And, it’s deployed where it should be; out on deck, in the open and exposed to the elements. Will it perform when you need it most? Probably not. It doesn’t have to be that way. According to JK Fabrication, the current system of storing wire on a front splash plate insures that the wire will fail as it has very tight radius bends and is rusted in a very short time.

Parasailing Operations - "Know Your Ropes"

A series of parasail incidents resulting in fatalities and injuries have occurred over the last few years. Since 2006, there have been 11 deaths and 52 injuries as a result of parasailing activities. There have been several common factors in all of these incidents that are unique to parasailing. The following mnemonic 'Know Your ROPES' was designed to remind parasail operators of important safety issues that may help prevent future casualties. Remember that most parasail fatalities and injuries are related to the failure of the towline. Failures have occurred at tensions significantly below the rated towline strengths due to a variety of reasons that may include cyclic loading, long term exposure to environmental elements, the presence of knots creating a weak point, and overloading.

Tugboat Engine Failure Imperils Alaska Drillship Tow

Tugboat 'Aiviq' experienced total engine failure, casting it & the Shell drilling rig  'Kulluk' adrift in stong winds & heavy seas, S. of Kodiak Island. The US Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley was sent to assist, establishing a tandem tow of both Aivig and Kulluk, which effectively prevented their drift towards shoal water, then, due to the severe weather the tow-line parted and became entangled in one of the cutter's propellors. USCG Monitors Retrieval of Empty Oil Barge

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Press Release stating that it monitored the retrieval of an empty oil barge after the towing line connecting it to a tug separated. The barge was inbound in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The tow was re-established after about 2 and one-half hours. The rescue tug located at Neah Bay was activated and escorted the tug and barge into port. Source: HK Law

Winch Malfunction Leaves Parasailors aloft for Three Hours

Two passengers were successfully launched from a parasail vessel for a ride aloft. As they were being winched in the winds picked up, and the parasail towline winch became inoperable and 800 feet of towline payed out stranding the passengers aloft. Additionally, the vessel was unable to make way through the water while battling rough seas and the strong winds, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a safety alert derived from a recent parasail casualty investigation. The cause of the winch malfunction was due to overheating of the hydraulic power system which occurred because of an inadequate oil cooling system (through hull fittings / scoop type system) that relied solely on the vessel's movement through the water.

The ShipArrestor system invented by Miko Marine AS of Oslo has been chosen as one of 50 exhibits at the first European Innovation Convention being held in Brussels on 5-6 December. The ShipArrestor was chosen from among 1200 projects funded by the European Union as it may be used to defend coastlines against the huge environmental damage that can be caused when a drifting oil tanker runs aground. Navy Sub Retiring

Tug Owner Jailed for Crewman’s Death

A tugboat owner was given an eight-month custodial sentence after his crew member died trying to reattach a tow line in a violent storm. Martin Richley, owner and skipper of 9.5m Medway tugboat Endurance, pleaded guilty to offences under the Merchant Shipping Act at a hearing today at Southampton Crown Court. Richley was charged with being the captain of a vessel put his crew at risk of serious injury/death and as the owner his operations were unsafe under sections 58 and 100 of The Merchant Shipping Act. On February 3, 2013 the Endurance began to tow 60ft motor cruiser Sirus M from the River Medway to Brighton on the south coast of England. Richley was acting as skipper on board the Endurance along with Steven Trice as the crew.

Crowley Marine Services successfully secured the wayward oil tanker, Atigun Pass, Thanksgiving weekend as it drifted within 20 miles of Oregon's pristine coastline. The decommissioned Atigun Pass, similar to the Exxon Valdez in size at three football fields in length, was en route from a Portland shipyard to Shanghai, China, for scrapping when the towline from the Chinese tug that was towing it snapped. When the towline parted early November 19, the tanker was about 100 miles west of Tillamook. "The vessel contained more than 20,000 gallons of residual fuel oil, too thick and sticky to be pumped from its tank, and there was potential for a medium size spill and a costly wreck removal if it ran aground," said Todd Busch, director, ship assists & escort services.

USCG Tests Emergency Tow System

The Coast Guard, along with members of the local commercial fishing and tugboat industry, tested Thirteenth Coast Guard District’s new Emergency Towing System recently. The ETS is a pre-staged package of equipment that would be delivered to a disabled vessel requiring assistance. The kit can be deployed from a tugboat or helicopter and consists of a lightweight high performance towline, a messenger line used in deploying the towline, a lighted buoy, and chafing gear. The ETS program came into existence following the near grounding of the motor vessel Salica Frigo on March 9, 2007 in Unalaska Bay, Alaska, but this test exercise marked the beginning of its use in the waters of Washington and Oregon.

Coast Guard Medevacs One, Continues 'Carnival Triumph' Escort

The Coast Guard took off a female passenger from the disabled ship in the Gulf of Mexico under tow to Mobile. A Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat — Medium crew medevaced a female passenger who reportedly suffered a stroke and transported her to Dauphin Island to meet emergency medical services. The tug vessel Resolve Pioneer reported a broken tow line which was restored by the tug Roland Falgout. Meanwhile Coast Guard boarding teams assisted CBP agents with passport verification and disembarkation processing with the ship some six miles south of the entrance to Mobile Bay.

Adrift Cargo Ship Taken in Tow

The Barbados-registered cargo vessel Skog, which was adrift off Orkney after encountering engine problems, is now under tow, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported. The 99-meter cargo vessel, laden with a cargo of paper, reported that it was drifting without engine power and taking in water this morning, leading Shetland Coastguard to send a rescue helicopter to the scene. The Coastguard also requested the Stromness and Kirkwall RNLI all weather lifeboats. MCA's emergency towing vessel ETV Herakles was also dispatched to assist the vessel, and an industry stand by vessel Vos Hera attended as well. The disabled ship's 10 crew members remain on board and pumps were transferred on board the Skog by the Coastguard helicopter.

Four Rescued After Two Boats Crash on Manasquan Inlet Jetty

The Coast Guard and partner agencies monitor debris and pollution Monday after two boats grounded on the Manasquan Inlet jetty Sunday, stranding four people. The captain of the 32-foot boat, Slashbacks, contacted Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders at 11:30 p.m. Sunday via VHF-FM channel 16 radio reporting the Slashbacks lost power while towing a 31-foot boat, Lady Jane, through Manasquan Inlet. As a result of the power loss, the tow line parted and both boats grounded on Manasquan Inlet’s southern jetty, stranding three people on the jetty and one person aboard the Slashbacks.

Fishing Vessel and Tanker Collide

Humber Coastguard received a MAY DAY call from the 13 metre fishing vessel Aquarius reporting they were taking in water with 3 persons on board approximately 16 miles East of Amble. Aquarius reported that they had been involved in a collision moments earlier with the 56,000 Tonne Bahamian tanker Alpha Germania, which was in ballast and on passage to Teesport. Humber Coastguard requested the launch of RNLI Amble Lifeboat and the Rescue Helicopter from RAF Boulmer, which is standing by with Coastguard pumping equipment. A near by fishing vessel called Rejoice attended the scene and has secured a tow line to Aquarius which has lost all steering but is not sinking.
