OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design

Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.

RoRo Ferry Accident Findings Released by UK's MAIB

Investigation report of accident involving the ro-ro ferry 'Norcape' in the Firth of Clyde released by Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) . On 26 November 2011, the port windlass of the UK registered Ro-Ro vessel Norcape suffered catastrophic damage during an attempt to weigh anchor in near gale force winds. At 0354 the wind was south westerly 30 knots when the vessel anchored in Brodick Bay, Isle of Arran, with 8 shackles on the port anchor and the starboard anchor on the seabed to reduce anticipated yaw.

Seaway Powell Marine, a company producing deck equipment, custom engineering solutions and electro-mechanical actuation, announced a successful week at Seawork International 2014. “With our best presence yet, there was a huge amount of interest in both the PT USA V Series Actuator and the Hypac Automatic Windlass,” the company said. The PT USA V Series Actuator is an actuator platform for linear motion control, now being built at the Seaway Powell manufacturing facility in Shaftesbury, Dorset. The V Series Actuators can be retro-fitted or installed as part of a new mechanical system.

Coastal Marine Expands in Brazil

Coastal Marine Equipment has extended its presence into the Brazilian marketplace by teaming with Macnor Marine and Macnor Services to assist in equipment sales and service. This relationship has proven successful as Coastal Marine has been awarded the deck equipment for two Oil Spill Response Vessels’ being built in Brazil at EISA Shipyard. Each vessel will receive an ABS approved anchor windlass, two capstans and two tuggers. The equipment will be engineered, manufactured and tested at Coastal Marine’s facility located on eleven acres in Gulfport, MS. They currently manufacture a complete line of marine deck equipment including anchor windlasses, capstans, towing winches, mooring winches, anchor winches, reels, spud winches, stern rollers, tow pins and rescue boat davits.

Huntington Ingalls Industries'  reports that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has successfully completed anchor testing on the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), bringing the ship closer to its 2016 delivery to the U.S. Navy. Ford's new anchor system features a lighter anchor and chain, weighing in at half the weight of the previous Nimitz-class carriers' anchor systems. Newport News shipbuilders recently gathered to test Ford's anchor windlass system that is used to deploy and retrieve the anchor and chain.

Veteran ocean voyager Dona Amélia completes refit.   The classic 71 m LOA, 1929-built gentleman's motor yacht Dona Amélia, recently departed Falmouth, UK after completion of a four-month refit at Pendennis. Works included routine maintenance (engineering survey, service and renovation of her original 1928 Krupp Germania Werft main Engines, overhaul of her generators, AC, water makers, thrusters, hydraulics, windlass). 

Havyard Deck Machinery Contract for NDM

NDM (Norwegian Deck Machinery) contracted by Havyard Ship Techology in Leirvik to deliver winches for a Forland Shipping offshore vessel newbuilding The contract is for the delivery of the following equipment:     •    One (1) combined windlass/mooring winch     •    Two (2) mooring winches     •    Four (4) capstans     •    Two (2) tugger winches All winches are electrically driven and will be delivered to the shipyard in March 2013 NDM specializes in the manufacture of deck macninery designed for operation in cold, harsh environments.

Great Lakes Group says it has reached the final stages of the routine maintenance and drydock contract on the USCG Cutter BISCAYNE BAY, the second of the USCG’s six Great Lakes-stationed 140-foot Bay-class ice-breaking tugs to be drydocked in the Group's shipyard.

Bill to Require Anchors, Manned Barges

The Joint Committee on Natural Resources and Agirculture of the Massachussets legislature held a hearing on a bill to require tank barges carrying petroleum products to be equipped with an anchor system, anchor chain and windlass. The bill would also require tank barges to be manned unless the Department of Environmental Protection determines other technical or operational saftey measures provide an equivalent defree of protection. The bill is similar to legislation introduced - but not enacted - in 1997.

Deaths & Injuries During Mooring Increasing

Serious accidents in mooring operations involving death or serious injury appear to be increasing over the long term, according to the UK P&I Club. The Club finds it has spent over $34m settling related insurance claims over the past 20 years. The numbers rarely exceeded four per cent of all claims on the Club and two per cent of settlements in 1987-97. During the next decade, however, the number peaked at 14 per cent in 2000 and the value at 15 per cent two years later. In 2007, both numbers and values dropped to 1997 levels. Mooring injuries have been only the seventh most frequent cause of personal injuries dealt with by the Club but the third most expensive per claim, indicating that these injuries are often more severe. Some 14 per cent of all accidents involved deaths.

Keppel Cebu Fixes to Reefers

Philippines’ Keppel Cebu shipyard, part of Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine, has repaired two reefer vessels – the first was the 7,212 grt Uranus, shipmanaged by London Ship Managers, London. The vessel arrived in the yard for her scheduled drydocking and repairs under Lloyds Register (LR) Class. Major work included the removal of the goose neck, building-up pins and fabricated spare gooseneck heel pins, renewal of lifeboat davit pins, servicing and renewal seal of the anchor windlass, renewal of the outboard seal and bonding of inboard seal, partial renewal of keel plate and installed gear box doublers at mooring and windlass, polishing and building-up propeller blades, nitrogen pressure testing on refrigerating lines.

UK Detains 10 Ships in February

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that 10 foreign ships were under detention in UK ports during February2004 after failing Port State Control safety inspection. Latest monthly figures show that 4 foreign ships were detained in UK ports during February 2004 along with 6 other ships still under detention from previous months. The overall rate of detentions compared with inspections carried out over the last 12 months is 6.0% which is a decrease of 0.4% on the detention rate to January. Three of the four vessels detained during the month were targeted by the Paris MOU for priority inspection.

Coastal Marine Awarded Contract

Coastal Marine Equipment Inc. has been awarded a contract to provide the deck machinery for the Penn Maritime ATB (tug & barge) being constructed at Bay Shipbuilding (Manitowoc Marine Group) in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. Equipment for the 140,000 barrel barge includes the 2-3/16 in. stud link anchor windlass with soft rope mooring drum; three double drum wire rope mooring winches; and three 24 in. mooring capstans. All equipment is electrically driven and provided with variable frequency drives for multiple speed operation. The tug will be fitted with a 36" hydraulic capstan and 60 HP electro-hydraulic power unit.

Ulstein Brattvaag Awarded Supply Of Deck Machinery

Ulstein Brattvaag has landed contracts totaling $2 million by two of Japan's largest shipbuilders for the supply of deck machinery for a pair of LNG carriers. The agreement also allows for options for corresponding equipment for two more LNG tankers, thus allowing the contract to double in value. Construction of the series of 135,000 cu. m. LNG carriers for the Malaysian State company Petronas tankers has been placed with two Japanese shipyards: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsui Engineering. The contract calls for Ulstein to supply a full set of low-pressure hydraulic deck winches for each LNG carrier, comprising two Brattvaag combined windlasses and mooring winches forward.

Markey Machinery Supplies Equipment For Response

Markey Machinery Co., Inc. of Seattle,Washington has supplied equipment onboard Crowley's tug Response. The bow of the tug is fitted with a WYW-20-48 hydraulic combination winch/windlass with a 1-1/4" anchor wildcat, and soft-line storage drum. Adjacent to the main hawser winch is a type DEPC-42 electric deck-winch for 350 ft. of soft-line, used for tie-up and basic barge-work (thus protecting the main line from general-purpose wear and tear) The DESS-52 250 HP Electric Hawser Winch represents a major leap forward in Escort Tug technology, providing the Captain with the ability to devote his attention to utilizing all of the tug's potential, and leaving the Hawser Winch to handle the line.

Ibercisa Supplies Iraqi Navi

The Spanish company Ibercisa supplies equipment to Fincantieri, Cantieri Navali Italiani, S.p.A. through its agent Gecom, for four Saettia MK Patrol ships for the Iraqi Navy. Each of the Patrol ships is equipped with two capstans, one vertical electric anchor winch model MAN-E/V/16-S/1 chain (16 mm) and one auxiliary cargo winch RHIB model MAX-C/E/15/25-16 (6 ton direct pull). All the supplied equipment are electrically driven according to owners’ specifications. Currently, equipment is also being produced to be supplied to the same shipyard for a fleet tanker to the Indian Navy…

NASSCO Wins $6.6m Navy Deal

National Steel and Shipping Co. San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $6,604,248 cost-plus-award-fee modification under a previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C4402) for repairs and alterations during the Non-Docking Scheduled Availability of USS Rushmore (LSD-47). The contractor furnishes the material, supports (electrical, crane, and rigging) and facilities necessary for the maintenance and modernization of LSD/LPD Class ships. This availability includes the chemical cleaning of Distilling Plant Number One, hydraulic modification of the anchor windlass brake, stern gate repairs, testing/repair of the accommodation ladder winch, and deck covering replacement. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and work is expected to be completed by Mar. 2008.

MAIB Repots on Pipeline Damage

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued the report of its investigation of an oil tanker, on June 25, 2007, dragging its anchor in the North Sea five miles east of Teesport and snagging a natural gas pipeline, resulting in material damage to the pipe, but no release of product. Due to heavy weather, the ship started to drag anchor. While weighing anchor so as to get underway, the ship’s windlass hydraulic motor exploded and the cable ran out to the bitter end. The tanker continued to drag anchor and snagged the pipeline. When the ship yawed, the anchor came free of the pipeline, but not before dislodging and damaging the pipe. The anchor later held as the ship rode over a shoal patch.
