ICS Launches Web-based MLC Resource
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) debuted a new web-based information resource to assist shipping companies to implement the International Labor Organization (ILO) Maritime Labor Convention (MLC). The ILO MLC entered into force worldwide in August although, in practice for many ships, full certification including the preparation of Documents of Maritime Labor Compliance on board individual vessels is not required until August next year.
FGROUP Concludes with a Record Attendance
The eighth edition of FGROUP (FORAN Reference Group) meeting took place in SENER offices in Tres Cantos, October 17-18, 2013. In attendance were 18 persons from 13 key FORAN customers, so taking more importance over the years as a fundamental FORAN event that usually takes place every two years. Not only the FORAN experiences are commented, but also the developments and the strategy for the future.
Maersk Tankers, Damco Appoint New CEOs
Morten Engelstoft has been appointed CEO of Services & Other Shipping in Maersk. The appointment will have effect from January 1, 2014. In addition Morten Engelstoft will take over the position as CEO for Maersk Tankers, as Hanne B. Sørensen has been appointed CEO of Damco. The changes in Maersk Tankers and Damco will also be effective from January 1, 2014. Services & Other Shipping consists of Damco, Maersk Tankers, Maersk Supply Service and Svitzer.
Transas Simulators for Girne American University
Transas has completed a project to supply the navigational and GMDSS simulators to Girne American University (GAU), a high school in Northern Cyprus. The configuration includes two navigational bridges based on the latest Transas Navi-Trainer Professional (NTPRO) software. The main bridge with five projector visualization channels is equipped with reduced set of dedicated hardware controls. It will enable training in various shiphandling operations including bridge team management.

Kiel Canal Remains Closed
The Kiel Canal remains closed due to prevailing adverse weather and the instability of a damaged vessel involved in a collision yesterday, October 28. Salvage works are currently underway. As the damaged vessel has not yet been stabilized sufficiently and bunker oil is penetrating into the Kiel Canal waters, the Canal Authority has decided to maintain the closure for another 24 hours until at least midday tomorrow, October 30. gac.com

MOL Release Latest On-Time Performance Data
In Q2 2013, the weather in the Pacific Ocean was stable, allowing the on time performance of Asia-USWC services to resume to over 90%. An even higher level of performance was expected, but was not achieved due to the impact on vessels by a labor strike in Hong Kong. Asia-USEC services performance maintained a similar level as was achieved in Q1 2013, while the major factor contributing to the low on time performance was terminal congestion in Algeciras.
