Holland America Floats out Koningsdam
Holland America Line's new ms Koningsdam is set to be delivered March 31, 2016. This week the ship was transferred from its dry dock to its outfitting dock at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy, where the final construction and interior furnishings will take place. The initial stages of a cruise ship's construction take place in a dry dock facility. Once exterior outfitting is completed, the dry dock is flooded and the ship is floated to a wet dock where construction continues.
France, Québec Joint Maritime Strategy
Quebec and France have announced plans to create a new bi-national oceanic research network in Rimouski. The proposed creation of this binational institute was formally agreed between the Premier of Quebec, Philippe Couillard, and French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, in Paris. Such an institute aims to bring co-operation and complementarity of France and Quebec in higher education, research and innovation to a new level.
Record Cargo Traffic at VOC Port
V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, has crossed the previous year’s traffic of 28.642 million tonnes on Feb 27, 32 days ahead of the current financial year closing by handling 28.849 million tones (upto Feb 27). According to a statement from the VOC Port Trust, the Port crossed the previous year’s (2013-14) Container traffic volume of 5,07,735 TEUs on March 3, by handling 5,08,678 TEUs of Container Traffic during the current year (as on March 3).

Russia Builds Nuclear Submarine "Arkhangelsk"
Russia’s Sevmash shipyard will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its next generation Project fifth Yasen-M multirole nuclear submarine, the Arkhangelsk, on March 19. The Yasen-class subs are touted as the most advanced nuclear-powered multipurpose underwater craft in the Russian Navy. According to local media reports, the Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov has ordered that the submarine be named Arkhangelsk.

Indonesia Seeks Foreign Investors for Port Expansion
Indonesia is seeking US$7 billion in foreign investment to upgrade its ports as part of a five-year plan to improve its ports network, Finance Asia said. The plan involves modernizing existing ports and building new ones in the country, which is Southeast Asia’s largest economy and the largest archipelago in the world. Indonesia’s ports are in need of upgrade, the report said; Indonesia ranks only 53rd on the World Bank logistics performance index, below Thailand and Vietnam.
