Tote Cargo ship adrift near Haida Gwaii
The MV North Star, a cargo ship that is owned by TOTE Maritime, spent more than half a day adrift Tuesday off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. The Canadian Coast Guard reported late Tuesday that the cargo ship lost propulsion and was adrift near the coast of Haida Gwaii. Transport Canada says the MV North Star is once again en route to Tacoma, Washington. According to The Canadian Press, the Coast Guard ship should arrive about 4 a.m.

Idling Fleet Continues to Surge
Owners are rapidly laying up containerships as the market slows. The size of the idle fleet will get bigger while rates and profits slide, says Drewry Shipping Consultants Limited. The number of idle container vessels has gained momentum in November and hasjumped 52 percent from October, Drewry said in its Container Insight Weekly. Idled ships are defined by Drewry as those which have been inactive for at least 14 days.
Maersk to Idle Vessel
The world's biggest container-ship operator Maersk Line has confirmed market talk that it has temporarily idled one of its largest vessels - yet another sign that the industry is in dire straits, says a report in the The Straits Times. Triple E mega-ship Morten Maersk - among the largest globally with a capacity of 18,000 standard containers - plys the Asia to North Europe route, calling at Singapore along the way.
