Navy to Assist in Disaster Response
Three ships, USS Nassau (LHA 4), USS Ponce (LPD 15), and USS Bataan (LHD 5), were ordered Sept. 12 to increase readiness for possible disaster response support. Nassau, which was already at sea conducting routine operations, has been directed south to operate off the Florida coast. Since Hurricane Ike made landfall along the Gulf Coast of the United States, Nassau is positioned to provide assistance to civilian authorities if needed.

August 15, 2008 was a milestone for Washburn & Doughty as the Linda Moran left the shipyard. Linda Moran is the first vessel delivered by the shipyard since a fire on July 11, 2008 destroyed the company's main construction building. The Linda Moran was tied to the company's barge when the fire broke out. Thankfully, due to light winds and local lobstermen who towed the vessel away from the barge, the Linda Moran survived undamaged. The Linda is a 121 x 36 x 18-ft.

Coast Guard Continues Response to Hurricane Ike
The Coast Guard rescued 95 people as part of post-Hurricane Ike operatikons. In addition, 103 were brought to safety on Friday afternoon by helicopter crews from The Coast Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas Task 1, and the California Air National Guard before the hurricane hit. The Coast Guard is continuing its responses to Hurricane Ike on Sunday. Assessment teams, which were staged inland at the Coast Guard Continuity of Operation (COOP) facility in Katy, have deployed to the field.
