UK First to Accept Marine Geoengineering Amendments
The United Kingdom has become the first state to formally accept the 2013 marine geoengineering amendments to the 1996 “London Protocol”, the treaty covering dumping of wastes at sea. The amendments support the precautionary approach by providing for specific marine geoengineering activities to be permitted only when the activity is assessed as constituting legitimate scientific research. Currently, only ocean fertilization for research purposes may be permitted.
New Zealand: Maritime Trade is Key
Globally, shipping is on the rise – already 80-90 percent of the world’s trade is by ship; that is more than 12 billion metric tons of goods annually, shipped by 1.5 million seafarers on 50,000 merchant ships. Without shipping, the import and export of goods on the scale necessary to sustain the modern world simply would not be possible. Shipping is especially important to New Zealand, an island that relies heavily on its vibrant maritime sector.
Kiel is First German Port of Call for Mein Schiff 5
The brand-new TUI Cruises newbuilding Mein Schiff 5 has arrived in Kiel – her first German port of call since being handed over in Turku, Finland, a few days ago. The 99,500GT, 295-meter-long cruise ship sailed into the Kiel Fiord early this morning, escorted by a Kiel tug and to a water fountain welcome. Thousands of visitors to the Kieler Woche sailing regatta watched from the shore as the Mein Schiff 5 berthed at the Ostseekai Cruise Terminal.
